I generally sleep very well as long as I am not in a moving vehicle of any kind. For some reason I just cannot sleep in a car or airplane at all. Noises don't bother me, but the lack of noise does. I did a backpacking trip earlier this summer and we spent a few nights well above treeline. It was dead silent and I had a very difficult time sleeping. I sleep the best when I am camping if I am next to a river and can hear the dull roar of a nearby rapid.

What they said. Also, that's not an alligator, but a crocodile, and way bigger then the american crocodile ever gets!

The turning vanes are difficult to see in the pictures. As someone else said, they are curved, airfoil shaped pieces of metal (even though they appear to be 45 degree slats). One of my first questions when I got there was if there were large energy losses in the turn vanes. Norm said that usually energy losses associated with turning air is enormous, however with the skyventure design, they have reduced the energy losses considerably. They had a number of experts in the field work on the design and this was the final product. Apparently what they caome up with was so innovative that NASA is interested in the technology. And yes, Norm said they are looking very good for a December opening!

Norm Rosendale was nice enough to give me a walkaround of the site this afternoon. I am very impressed. I knew there was a lot of new technology that went into the skyventure wind tunnels, but I was amazed at what I saw out there. Here are some pictures I took: sideview - the tunnel as it stands today. turnvane2 - a closeup of the fans and the turnvane which directs the air down the return air tower. insidetower - in the basement looking up through the return air tower at the turnvane. lookingup - looking up from the basement at the fans through where the flight chamber will be. Where I am standing in the basement will be dedicated to turnvanes and airflow. turnvane1 - the turnvane that will sit at the top of the diffuser between the fans. It is big enough that I could stand up in it without having to duck!

Wish you were here is definatly my favorite album. I like all the songs on that album, esp shine on you crazy diamond, welcome to the machine and wish you were here The wall is damn good too. I think another brick in the wall part two is my favorite on that album.

Another thing that I am convinced we will see in the not too distant future is nuclear powered water desalinization plants. Nuclear powered desalinization plants are already used in dry parts of the world to provide the cleanest water possible to large populations. As we use up more and more of the limited resource that water is, coastal populations will be forced to consider this option. Unfortunatly today, I cannot see it happening, because no one would want to know that their water was coming from a nuclear source. I really dont understand the stigma against nuclear power in this country... One day, we will have to "get over it" and realize that it is the only way and it is safer and cleaner than coal!

Seems about right for a "normal" bar. I used to raft guide in Fayetteville West Virginia (Where the New river gorge bridge is). There is a bar there called Charlies which is famous for it's very cheap, strong drinks. The first time I walked in there, I asked for a vodka and red bull. Charlie took a tall glass, threw a few ice cubes and filled it to the brim with vodka, then opened a red bull and set it next to the glass. $3 please. I was happy to pay it.

Um, that's all good and well, but I am sure people would prefer to drive less than 6 and a half hours to the bridge every day.

There is also an unmarked, free campground run by the city of Canon City less than 2 miles from the bridge. PM me if you want directions.

Well, at least it's got a much better turning radius then my truck

yeah, I do solos from time to time to work on freeflying skills and moves where I am not entirely comfortable being around other people in the sky yet. But on this particular jump all I did was jump out, go to my back and watch the tandem behind me leave then get in a sit and enjoy the view of the mountains and being where I was. On jumps with others, I don't get to enjoy the scenery or the fact that I am 2 miles above the ground in freefall as much because I am concentrating more on where they are and what I am doing relative to them. One of my favorite things to do is a high pull and just relax and enjoy the long ride down.

Yeah, but our tunnel is in Colorado! I'll be down in that neighborhood midweek, I'll see if I can stop by and snap more pictures.

hard opening, cutaway...what causes them?
davedlg replied to windcatcher's topic in Safety and Training
I was having fairly brutal openings (on a spectre, no less) when I first started packing. I finally realized that the way I was crouching on the bottom of the cocconed canopy when I was pushing the tail around was causing the slider to creep down away from the stops. Now I am very careful about how I lay on the canopy so that I control the slider and keep it up against the stops and I am having the nice, soft openings the spectre is known for. -
Is it just me or does anyone else like going on the ocassional solo jump for fun? When I had just gotten my A-license, I mostly did solos because I didn't have a whole lot of people to jump with. Now I go to the DZ and I have a lot of people who I can jump with, but I like to take the ocassional jump and just relax and do my own thing. I really like getting out and playing around freeflying and not having to worry about where anyone else is. I had to actually turn down jumping with others just to have a jump to myself. It seemed like no one understood why I would want to do a solo if I had other people to jump with.
