  1. Put tall people outside. They can see over the aircraft if standing in the door
  2. Is she cute? Heh. Only joking . From the site:
  3. VH-MMV, actually. Fun fact: the aircraft owner used to be dead against his pilots wearing bailout rigs. Baz only started wearing one a week before this incident. Extra bonus fun fact: The APF have recently mandated that pilot rigs must be made available to all jump aircraft pilots.
  4. They're full-time skydivers?
  5. Damaged ankle due to a fall. PM her for more...
  6. She's out of commission at the moment, due to a non-jumping-related accident.
  7. You're early mate. By my calendar, Dec 29 is her birthday.
  8. Why not go straight to the source? Performance Designs on Wingloading and Its Effects (pdf).
  9. Huh? What the hell does dumping cookies achieve if you've just had your system compromised? If the link contains a trojan, don't visit it. Go see the video on skydivingmovies.com instead.
  10. All black? That is so retro. Maybe he's getting into 4-way?
  11. Samurai 170 @ 1.2. 180 at about 440ft, but I need to bring it down to about 400-420 because of a change in my turn technique. Start from brakes, double-fronts, then offset-double-fronts for the turn. Slow, smooth release of the fronts is all I need to plane out on this canopy.
  12. Yep. Toogoolawah has very nice facilities, including a swimming pool.
  13. While that's the letter of the law (as cited in Tombuch's article), it's simply not enforced at major US dropzones. If it was, it'd royally piss off a large number of visiting jumpers.
  14. It's more complicated than that. The definitive word. However, it's worth noting that many US DZs don't appear to enforce the letter of the law... technically Aussie jumpers visiting the USA that jump TSO'd gear must have their reserves repacked by an FAA-rated rigger.
  15. That maybe you could have slapped a NSFW on it? It's 2:20pm on a Thursday here...
  16. UML contains everything and the kitchen sink, so you can make things far too complex. Stick to a simple subset of the available tools and your life will be a lot easier. I haven't used any UML modelling tools in best part of a decade, so I'm the wrong person to give advice on that. Besides, Rational Rose 4.0 sucked.
  17. I've owned three canopies. An old ragged-out Airforce 220, a Spectre 190, and a Samurai 170. Lets discount the Airforce - it got junked because it was worn-out F-111 and it didn't fly or land properly. I did 400-odd jumps on my Spectre loaded at ~1.0. It took me 300+ jumps to become comfortable with the canopy. For me, comfort was the ability to land the canopy anywhere, anytime. Wind has come up and I'm backing up at a rate of knots? No problem. Dodgy spot and I have to land in a small paddock? Not a worry. Break fire on opening after a 40-way? Pshaw. I currently have about 400 jumps on the Samurai 170, which I load at about 1.2. The first 50 or so jumps scared the crap out of me. By virtue of being smaller and very elliptical, the canopy was so much more responsive than the Spectre. It seemed I only had to think about where I wanted to go and there I went! After doing 300+ 90s, I've just recently stepped up to 180-degree front riser turns. I'm now comfortable on this canopy, though I've not yet tapped its full potential. Comfort, for me, was the ability to think ahead of the canopy, to be anticipating, analysing, and correcting during my setup and swoop, making small corrections before major ones were needed. I'm having lots of fun! My new rig should be ready to jump in late February or early March.
  18. The lack of a huge TSO warning label doesn't give it away?
  19. Richard Dawkins - The God Delusion Interesting, but his style of writing and arguing a point has yet to win me over.
  20. Canopies known for their good opening characteristics include the Spectre, Pilot, and Safire2. Some camerafolk that jump with lots of heavy head-mounted gear swear by Spectres lined with Dacron. Most canopies these days come lined with Spectra, which stretches significantly less than Dacron. Pretty much any modern container will serve you well. When it comes to AADs, it's my belief that you can't really go past the Cypres2. The Vigil and Argus are still too new to trust my life to - there's still some bugs being worked out. Reserves - PD-R and Smart both come highly recommended.
  21. Do you have a rapide link on the bridle assembly? It could have hit that.
