  1. My favourite in NYC was "cheese food". So cheap and nasty that it technically wasn't cheese . Here in Australia, there's a flavour of cheddar called "Tasty". There's "Mild", "Vintage", "Sharp", and "Tasty" . Very very very odd.
  2. Yup. I'm with you on that. Get it out of the way and feel all virtuous
  3. Get it. A cheese toastie is what it's called in Ireland. Also good with a slice of ham alongside the cheese.
  4. How do you do it? Idiot-proof instructions for a non-Yank, please.
  5. As a general rule of thumb, I'd close off the credit cards first. They do tend to cause problems in moments of weakness. But how the hell did you get stuck with 9% APR over 30 years?! That's steep. Since it's higher than the CC, I'd pay it off and close it. One less thing to worry about. Focus next on getting the closed CC down, and don't accept a higher limit on your open CC. edit: actually, thinking about it a little more, interest rates in the US are likely to climb in the near future (the treasury has recently raised rates again). This makes it likely that the APR on your CCs will go up, so it might be better to pay that off first. Most important is to pay and close one off. Gives you a nice sense of achievement!

  7. You didn't buy a car 'coz the previous owner was gay?
  8. As an Irishman who lived in the UK for four years, I can't give blood in Oz either. That sucks.
  9. I can guess! Especially if they don't use the HTPP header if-modified-since or respect the last-modified time .

    How did you guess?!

    C++ help?

    Nice. Thanks. (I couldn't find it on google).

    Square brackets are UBB (the bastardised-cousin-of-html code that allows you to put smiley faces into your messages). [_i_ ] without the underscores puts the text into italics - like using in HTML. I don't know how to escape it, unfortunately.
  13. Getting a demo out to Oz may prove tricky! Is the Mamba the new helmet that's not-quite-released yet? Fibre Zone helmets are carbon-fibre and are pretty damn sturdy. Unfortunately tho, no full-faces as yet.

    Hah . I don't own a copy of Stroustrup. Does this mean I can't call myself a C++ programmer . Still, time for me to go back to web services in J2EE. I don't think I've ever seen so many configuration files to set up something so simple...

    It's the sticky called 'Contact the Manufacturer' at the top of the Gear And Rigging forum . edit: maybe I should read your post first. Whoops .

    C++ help?

    Haven't found a reference to the standardisation date, but here's some fun info on Microsoft's approach to for() loop scoping. Fun for all the family .
  17. The grey thing? It's a packing tab. You can also see it in the 4th picture from the top. You out on Saturday? If so, I'll see you then!

    If you don't mind, I think I'll steal that line .

    C++ help?

    If you want to get technical, I believe (with about 75% confidence) that it should be out of scope, but that that was only defined in the ANSI '99 C++ standard... and VC++6 was written prior to that standardisation! I'm not sure how newer C++ compilers behave. It's one of the subtle syntactic differences between Java and C++ that occasionally trip me up. Like the way that public/protected/private differ - always get me when I switch languages .

    C++ help?

    What? Either I'm misunderstanding you, or you're wrong. Yes it does. It wouldn't be a hell of a lot of use as a compiler if it didn't, would it? I'm not assuming. You're just starting to learn C++. You don't know the iostream library. Ergo, you don't yet know enough to be comparing compilers or development environments. Note: I'm not saying VC++6 is the best thing since sliced bread. But it's pretty damn good.

    C++ help?

    Umm, this makes no sense. It's a couple of assembly instructions, no more. Why put the null test in a loop? You only need to check it once.

    C++ help?

    Bullshit. Don't make statements you can't back up. I've written multi-billion-dollar-mission-critical systems using VC++6. It works. Well. The STL error messages are a fucking nightmare (it expands all templates) but otherwise I'd absolutely no problems with it. Neither did the other six C++ developers on the team. Microsoft's development tools are, in general, excellent.
  23. If you decide to go for an open-face helmet, just buy one from Cameron at the DZ. He makes the Fibre Zone helmets - I've never heard a bad word said about them. Top quality. Have a chat to some experienced folk and instructors at the weekend about open vs. full-face.
