Hmmm, yes, lets save them from torture by bombing them. Makes sense to me... Unfortunately this looks like a no-win situation for the Iraqi people. Either they get invaded and a lot of people die or they continue to live under a psychopathic dictator and a lot of people die.

And of course there was Group Captain Adolf "Sailor" Malan DSO, DFC from South Africa. Not only did he end the war with 32 kills (plus 2 unconfirmed), his "10 rules for air fighting" were distributed and taught throughout RAF fighter command. He changed the way fighter formations flew and attacked - he was instrumental in the Battle of Britain.

I'm trying really hard to fathom how you could say 'And it's okay that you are anti-American'. I've reread what kallend wrote and it seems accurate to me. I'm rather intrigued by your post, could you please elaborate. It seemed rather patronizing and reeked of jingoism.

No, but I would like to see Homer eat a donut...

I have a lot of respect for the fact that most of those soldiers who went to Vietnam were conscripts. They didn't choose to make the army their career, they didn't choose to go to war. They did it because they had to and they made the best of it. I only did a year's national service in the army, the bush war in Angola had just ended so we ended up mostly doing unrest control. When your country requires your service you give it (in whatever capacity, whether it be soldier, nurse, teacher etc.) Despite my personal opinions of Bush (which are low), I do still have the utmost respect for the soldiers of the joint task force. And if hopefully the war doesn't take place they would still have done a good job. Just by being there they are putting pressure on Hussein and giving credibility and power to the inspectors.

Could you give me an example of where I have done this please.

In 2002 3.1 million people died of Aids related illness. That averages out to about 8 500 every day. Not sure what more can be done. More education? Free condoms made freely available in the countries that are hardest hit? Free needles for junkies? More money spent on finding a cure?

And the Allied pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain were protecting America as well. Montgomery's Eight Army that defeated Rommel was protecting America as well. Russia attacking Germany from the east was protecting America as well. If none of these had happened one could speculate that after conquering Europe and Africa Hitler might have had a go at America as well. Dave a lot of Americans have died defending other countries' freedom, but a lot of non-Americans have also died defending America's freedom. Is America the grudging protector of global freedom or the capitalistic exploiter? I don't know, sometimes I think it is both.

Did you fit riser inserts after the first experience? Trying to chop and not being able to must have been a pretty scary experience.

Why on earth would you want peace? There is nothing good on TV at the moment, a war would definitely make for good viewing. (of course we'd then have to suffer through all those endless humanitarian documentaries afterwards, about all the people who got themselves killed and maimed, that doesn't make very good viewing...)

Had my first cutaway this past Saturday. Jumped camerasuit for first time, put myself into line-twists on opening (I was doing a solo and wasn't wearing camera - just wanted to play with the suit and do some turns, fast fall, slow fall and practice touches). When I went in to pull for real I had line-twists (left wing caught air). Tried kicking them out but canopy was diving and spiralling. Had hand on each handle, but had hard cutaway so had to use both hands to chop (own fault, didn't peel properly if at all). Initiated EPs at '1 800. This was a solo so I had to follow my own shit down. Jump nr. 363. Will

0:6:1 Case owed for first camerasuit jump and first cutaway (same jump). Value for money combining firsts I reckon..

Minimum Jump Numbers for Instructor Ratings

Huh? Cheating the system? I'm not saying what that guy did was right, but he could very easily just have faked the entries in his logbook. At least he actually did the 500 jumps. -
Ask Derek to go over Dan's back again? (intentionally)

Pussycat goes pussysplat?

Do you truly believe this? Incredible.

But we KNOW North Korea has no nuclear weapons so no need to invade there right? Makes me laugh, just today I read this (North Korea in nuclear breach). I also find it rather amusing that the same war-mongers who state that the UN is a pathetic useless organization, cite Iraq's breach of UN resolutions as reason to invade. But I suppose the irony escapes them. This war is about oil. OBL asks for Iraqi peoples' co-operation to overthrow their government (who he calls infidels) and fight the Americans. Trying to include Saddam in the Axis of Evil based on what OBL and his cronies did is ludicrous. Obviously Saddam is an evil man, but as has been pointed out here so many times - so are so many other dicators in the world today. Why not invade them? Dubya probably sees the solution to the recession as follows : Oil good. Pretzels bad. Saddam very bad. Kill bad man and get more oil. Daddy happy. The end Apologies to Billvon for hijacking this thread.

I'd never do that unless it was in jest. However, as for those sunglasses you are sporting in your avatar - well now Magnum PI that is a whole different matter...

You missed out Best Comedy! I hereby nominate myself for best comedy - similar to Eminem my movie is called '5 mile' (cos thats how far I was from the DZ when I prematurely ejaculated... )

Actually, by saying that you did just respond.... Dumbass!

That is why I love being South African - we have always been such tolerant, easy-going open-minded people. I would give you all a great big virtual hug but the Americans are too fat, the English have bad breath (rotting teeth), the Irish are too drunk and the Canadians are just too stupid. Apart from that lot everybody else is OK in my book!

Yeah, I suppose Banic was the inventor of the modern day parachute (like Patric de Gayardon was with the wingsuit). Still, first skydive (ie freefall from a plane) was in 1919, according to this the first successful BASE jump took place in 1595. Obviously not that related seeing as planes wouldn't be invented for another 300 years. I just found it a bit weird, thinking that BASE *grew* out of skydiving, yet predates it by so long.
-
Dunno if this is common knowledge but I was quite surprized to find out that the inventor of the parachute made his first jump from a building (41 floors) in Washington D.C. on June 03 1914. Stefan Banic then later went on to jump from a plane. This guy must have had balls made of titanium! So, if the first BASE jump happened before the first skydive, does this mean that BASE is an older sport than skydiving?

You can still buy a PC7 rollcage from Aerial Focus (Tom Sanders' company). I just bought a PC7 second hand as well - really robust cameras. Will

Actually its a known fact that South Africa (with a little help from Monty and his 8th army) was responsible for Rommel's defeat in WWII. Thereafter the South African forces finished off the job in Europe by way of Italy. The whole D-day thing was just a diversion. Admittedly the yanks and the poms did help a bit, but mostly that war was won by South Africa...
