Dealing with off-landings in a city / urban environment
matthewcline replied to pchapman's topic in Safety and Training
Love those things! Did a jump for a Bowl game, on the walk through the camera operator was practicing when we discussed the camera being down for out jump. "No problem" says the producer. Flash forward to me on final, I look passed the 50 and the big logo to see a black and silver alien rushing towards me! "Shit this will get interesting" I say aloud. Ground Control said they could read my lips, pretty easy as I was on the "Jumbo Tron". Oops. Second time one of those Jumbo Tron's got me. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. They only endorse the use of PD Reserves and Mains, correct. But they also tell the Rig owners they are all, on their own, if they use none approved components. As are any T-I's who do not follow UPT procedure. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

How is the T-I doing this activity SAFELY? How was the training conducted? Did they follow a wing suit manufacturer's course? The Video and Waiver brings up the point you could die or be seriously hurt. The same video, if the Factory Produced one, shows one type of Tandem Parachute Instruction Jump in action. That type of jump is all that is endorsed by the Factory. Using an experienced skydiver with wing suit experience, I see no issues, using a Student, no matter how many Tandem Jumps they where a part of, I see issues. The Student has not trained on how the wing suit can complicate the skydive, and a Tandem Instructional Jump is already a complicated skydive. The Student is not experienced enough to work out of any issues created on a complicated, by the Wing Suit, skydive. Maybe in 10 years there will be a way to make this common place and happen safely. Anybody think that this might not be the greatest of ideas?

Unless it is for a Community Pool or Skate Park after all is said and done. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! -
Yes, I won on Day One. The type Prize rotates daily, it is Swag type stuff. On Day One it was a choice of PD Ball Cap, you choose the type from the gear store. So my Burnt Orange w PD Logo Flex Fit is on the way. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

Well, Technically that is not correct. That was re-currency jump being conducted under the DIRECT supervision of an Instructor. The Instructor is responsible till he signs off on the jump after its debrief is completed. There is a sequence for Instructors and Coaches to use at the bottom end of a skydive, typically referred to as "The Bottom End Sequence". The Instructor in this video did not use it. There is also a standard for a Student to use in the event of a loss of altitude awareness, once he realized his alti was stuck he should have waved off and deployed. Why he did not respond to the pull signal is odd, but he and the Instructor can attest to the "Why's" of their actions them selves. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. Since you used the SIGMA as your example. UPT, the maker if the SIGMA as you know, has stated that a handle check is MANDATORY on all jumps with UPT equipment and defines that check as: Look at and Touch each handle in proper sequence. But it is not HC fault it is not being done that falls on the T-I's. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

Can anyone bring a suit from USA to UK?
matthewcline replied to jont's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That equates (roughly) to what we have here in the US. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! -

What if it is just to replace the one that "wore out" on vacation, same thing? Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! -

matthewcline replied to jont's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Curious. If a UK Jumper buys a suit here while on vacation and adds it to their gear bag do they still pay the VAT? Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! -
Don't buy a suit yet. Your instructor should be helping you to "dress for success", just like he should, from the Students suits at the DZ. Once your off Student status and are getting some coaching into technique and body positioning, then you can deal with buying a jump suit. Once your at that stage then the advice up to this point can be applicable. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

If they are trying to pass as one who earned the ribbons/badges/awards, I could see your point. As we are talking about a gift it is mute really. In the ABN world for the single Paratrooper's there is a tradition to give your mother a set of jump wings. Lots of those mothers wear those wings at various functions. There is a similar tradition for the married Paratrooper's and their wives. Are they wrong? Beck is an ass and Quade got we he wanted with this thread, attack the messenger, make him look worse. Have some one check out your landing tech, it sounds like your not finishing your flare and running out a 3/4 to 7/8 stroke. I have been jumping Spectre's from 107 up to 170 for a few years now pretty consistent and I find i only run out the ones I don't finish my flare on. But I am web diagnosing, so take it with a grain of salt. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

Is any of that stuff even made in the States any more? Other than the high end designer stuff. American brands like Nike and Levi's are made over seas. I watched a 20/20 type news program a while back that showed a sweat shop sewing jeans, they sewed for 4 different Companies, all the same materials, just a different pocket stitch and model/brand tag. The "American Made" brand was three times the price on the shelf. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

The flaw in the "Buy American" mantra is it is not the least expensive for the most part and in today's economy, most have to shop more frugally. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

Talk to Nash at Skydive East TN. They built one recently and it is situated in such a way there is a PAC/Otter door on the opposite side. Great set up, very productive and fiscally responsible. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

I read Marcus' post, it did not appear to me HE gave it to Beck, another SEAL did. When asked by his fb followers, Marcus said he was good with it and understood it was a gift and the "gifter" had requested he (Beck) wear it. It appears to stem from Beck's support of SEAL's who where on trial, he sided with the SEAL's. This is not like he is trying some game of making any one believe he is a SEAL. I think this is as silly as the arguments over who does and who does not wear an American Flag pin on their lapels. IF he was trying to fake being a SEAL, fry him, but he is not. Nor is he trying to pass as a Sailor. He is just an Entertainer, a political satirist. And he has us talking about him and maybe even tuning in to see him wear the pin. For him, it is: "Mission Accomplished". Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

I think your story makes the point that any individual, regardless of sexual orientation, can serve. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! -

Neil Patrick Harris - Openly Gay, Conservative and not a "Flamer". I think you have Liberace stuck in the equating of "flamer" and you have "flamer" stuck in equating "openly gay". I knew several gay Soldiers, they where just as manly or womanly as the straight Soldiers in their Gender. I just don't see the issue with this. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. BRADLEY MANNING: POSTER BOY FOR 'DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL'
matthewcline replied to skyrider's topic in Speakers Corner
How do you figure that? There would appear, in a 10 second google search, to be numerous openly gay men and women who can serve just fine. If your talking some one flamboyant and flashy, I would venture a guess they would not be interested in serving in the Military. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. Talk about an impossible task! But I did find it odd, based on the vote numbers, how many stood up and applauded. Some of those who stood up had to have voted too censure him. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

BRADLEY MANNING: POSTER BOY FOR 'DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL'
matthewcline replied to skyrider's topic in Speakers Corner
Yes. I was going to apply for the SF PD and was looking at ultimately SWAT. Two Snipers each told me they have NEVER been ordered to kill. They have been told they needed to have clear fields of fire, they have been told they are authorized to shoot, they have been told they may reduce the threat (I can see that as being translated to "Kill"). But neither of them had been ordered to kill. But they don't kill for sport or fun, they do it if warranted for the over all safety of the society.
