Just curious if anyone is running their car on biodiesel. My boyfriend just picked up a used Jetta that he's going to start running on this- today! His plan is to run it on biodiesel, and as soon as he can, he will add a veggie oil conversion kit on there so that he can also run it off of straight veggie oil. Anyone have this? Right now what I'm hoping to do is find several options like that, summarize some information about them and then help my client contact various organizations and decide which is best for them. It's a developmental disability with major language problems (speaking, reading, writing..) and mild MR. Basically I'm trying to find if there are community organizations which provide assistance for folks with special needs, counseling, placement, training.. a special needs vocational counselor is what I need, but how do I find that person? Just through DSHS? We don't directly learn about this sort of thing through our classes, so I don't know where to start. I get the feeling that my client needs to feel more like they have some direction in their life and are working towards a goal and not just subsisting. I know that you asked about nursing.. but I love my field so much that I always try to get people to investigate it. So.. think about speech language pathology! As an SLP you get to work in and with the medical profession and get the decent pay, and benefits that go along with the field. Unlike professions such as nursing there will never be a speech language pathology emergency requiring you to work hours outside of the normal work week. You get to help all types of people: children with disabilities ranging from cerebal palsy to autism to stuttering, adults with acquired language disorders from strokes or TBIs, folks with cancer of the vocal mechanism, people with degenerative disorders such as Alzheimers or Parkinsons, people with hearing loss and cochlear implants, people with dysphagia (swallowing problems) from things such as spinal cord trauma... the list goes on and on. It is a profession that I do not think you could possibly get bored with. You study neurology, biology, physics (acoustics of sound), counseling, education, behavioral principles, communication disorders, linguistics, hearing loss, etc. etc. A masters degree is the entry level degree to be an SLP, however with a bachelors, (in some states) you can work as an SLP assistant and expect a modest income. SLPs are in big demand and the demand is continuing to grow. You can work in hospitals, clinics, schools, private practices or in home-based therapy programs. Hours are flexible; part-time and full-time jobs are plentiful and work is available in all areas of the country from cities to rural populations. SLPs should be good communicators, creative, compassionate, professional, detail oriented and able to multi-task. If you're interested in the profession more information can be found at www.asha.org. I'm dying to get back to school and working with clients again after such a long winter break. It really is fun, fascinating stuff. I too considered nursing but decided that I did not want to be constantly around death, dying, bodily fluids and I didn't want to work long crazy hours. I got (or rather, got the money for) a snowboard set-up. I was supposed to get this last year but I was injured and got camera gear instead. I'm pretty much set gear wise for all of the sports I enjoy.. but maybe I'd like to get into kayaking.

I caught a bullshitter in one of my community college classes once. I overheard him telling some folks behind me that he was a skydiver and he had his own gear and stuff. I was pretty skeptical, because if he was a jumper in my neck of the woods, I would have met him. But I thought maybe he was uncurrent or something. I asked him how many jumps he had and he said he had a lot, he didn't know. Then I asked him what kind of parachute he had, since that was the item of gear that he mentioned that he owned. He told me, "rainbow". After some investigation I found out that he had 3 jumps, all tandems and had bought a really cheap, rainbow parachute on ebay! Then he proceeded to tell me that he was really going to use the parachute for BASE jumping and he told the folks in the class that the building at school was tall enough to BASE off of. It was 4 stories, maybe 100 feet high MAX. He actually argued with me about the possibility of doing this, even after I told him I also had some BASE experience. What a tool.. I'm sure that he kept the conversation going even after I exposed his lies because he couldn't stand to have a girl who was younger than him show him up.
