  1. Just get yourself one of these, I'm sure they'll have something at Radio Shack too. You could also just buy the male and female jacks and wire your own extension. Radio Shack even carries a 90 degree (right angle) jack that works well in some situations where you can't have that thing sticking straight out from the camera body. Those 2.5 mm jacks are actually pretty rugged. In my experience the connectors that don't take the abuse are the bastardized proprietary connectors on cameras that don't use the standard 2.5 mm audio jack.
  2. I make my own tongue switch using a micro switch, a length of two-conductor wire (I only use the ground and shutter and leave the focus contact open), and a 2.5 mm audio plug. It's less than ten dollars worth of parts. In order to keep saliva out of the switch, I tape the end of a thumb cut from a plastic glove over it. Occasionally, the little "condom" leaks and shorts out the inside of the switch. I suspect that may be what's happening to you and your friend. Once I also found a short in the 2.5 mm plug, just from wear, I suppose. I like the little roller micro switch because it is very easy to feel and gives good tactile feedback. If you have an old busted CD-rom drive, I'll bet you can find one inside
  3. I think you just might have the perfect excuse to switch to a Sony CX100 ;-)
  4. I make my own and wire it only for the shutter, leaving the focus connection open. Works fine. There must be something else wrong with docjohn's switch.
  5. Are you wanting to sell the digital images themselves, or photographic prints? I manage my own web sites and sell prints only. I use Adobe Photoshop's Web Photo Gallery template. I modified the template so that it inserts the necessary scripting for submitting orders through my Paypal business account. This is very easy to do if you know how to write basic html and javascript an can manage a basic web hosting account. Here's what it looks like: CLICKY
  6. Yes ... certainly, when you are using a tripod and long exposure times the effect is readily reproduced on every shot. However, with the camera set to manual focus, Tv of 250, evaluative metering, and ISO 200, if you take a series of shots in continuous mode while moving the camera around so that it occassionaly catches direct sunlight into the eyepiece from behind, the metering will be way off on some of the images. Most of the shots will be properly exposed, but a small percentage of the shots will come out clearly underexposed.
  7. I understand how camera work. I'm talking about the sunlight entering the viewfinder from behind. When the sun is behind the camera and your eye is not covering the viewfinder, light enters while the camera is metering and the camera will stop down in Tv mode ... the picture will be too dark. Try it on the floor ;-)
  8. Do you have the view finder covered? If you don't, this is exactly what will happen ... when the camera is oriented so that the sun shines into the viewfinder, the camera will stop down the aperture too far and the image will be too dark. You can test this easily on the ground on a sunny day.
  9. hehe I thought making one song was hard :) but the question is then what should the second one focus on?:D The second one should be about skydivers rather than skydiving ;-) I love the song. You did an Awesome job. I left you a little review on Jamendo and gave it a 10 rating. Thanks!!
  10. I don't get this. Are you saying that zoomability is a high priority? Do you use the zoom in freefall? If not, on the ground you can just walk towards and away from your subject (fast) instead of using the camera's zoom button
  11. Skydiving is not safe. Lying in bed with the covers over your head is safe (assuming you remembered to turn the stove off before going to bed).
  12. I've been using Adorama for years. Always fast and reliable.
  13. And if the center loses altitude awareness? Then you're fucked since you were looking at them instead of your alti. I think you missed the point of Billvon's post. He said, "My primary measure of altitude is visual; I can see if we are significantly too low." What if your altimeter is wrong?
  14. The real world is analog. Start with an analog altimeter and use it to calibrate your view of the earth below. Later on you can use the digital device to give you a number instantly, but you can never rely on the instrument as much as you should be able to rely on your vision and your awareness of the analog information the environment gives you. Billvon is absolutely right when he says, "They're great backups. But you should not need one to safely complete a skydive. If someone _does_ need an altimeter, then it is worthwhile working on the skills needed to judge altitude independently of the altimeter - so that if it ever fails they will not have a problem tracking/deploying at safe altitudes. "
  15. HERE is a very nice article just posted by The Photo Attorney There is also a link in there to an article about "fair use".
  16. Just wondering ... I have no experience with martial arts falls ... can you explain what, if anything, they have in common with a PLF? Does sliding on your tailbone for 150 feet have anything to do with a martial arts fall?
  17. I really like the photographs! The layout was uncomfortable with the horizontal scrolling, and I think the images, loading all at once, are too large making the loading very slow. It would be better to use thumbnails and let the user decide when/if they want to load the full-size images.
  18. Well, I think you don't have to worry about offending too many out there The number of people that can 'make a living' shooting tandem videos can't be very large at all. The best way to 'sell a lot less videos' AND do some good for the DZ is to charge more for the videos. Everybody wins that way
  19. Here's our policy: Almost nobody follows through with an order for prints, most seem to be quite satisfied with the slide show of 640x480 proofs on the DVD. When people have requested the hi-res raw digital photos I have been able to work it out so that I can give them a CD of hi-res JPG's in return for signed, stock-photo-specific, model releases. I think I have been able to make far more money this way as opposed to trying to sell prints. But that's just me ... and we are a very small C-182 DZ.
  20. Hmmmm...that's interesting. Has this ever been tested? The waiver can't stop someone from doing that (it might even be considered a Fair Use!); but it just might give the DZO a means to threaten the photographer with a law suit. The next step could be for the DZO to forbid "unauthorized" photography within his operation entirely. He has every right to do that. Do you think it's more likely that there would be a tandem incident that gets photographed and publicized than an incident involving fun jumpers? Most people may not realize that issues surrounding model releases and/or photographers' rights are fundamentally issues that pit rights of privacy against free speech. Very often, especially after 9/11 , we see the rights of photographers being restricted on the basis of exaggerated fears. Many DZ's are public places where photographers have rights that should be exercised rather than waived.
  21. Oh yeah ... that would fit my definition of broke too!
  22. Tell him that you have taken out a life insurance policy in his name.
  23. When you say the "button broke," what exactly do you mean? Like Billvon said, the "button" contains all the electronics...but it might still be reparable, depending on what you mean by "broke"
