Skydiving is bad for the environment
ChangoLanzao replied to ChangoLanzao's topic in Speakers Corner
According to CLICKY What really gets me is that they used one of MY PHOTOS without permission and without attribution. Sheesh! -
My point, and the point of the original question, is that the accepted PLF technique may not fit every situation, as we often land with more forward momentum now than in days past, but the principles of how to protect your body in a fall do not change. So, you can either try to teach a different technique for each type of landing and hope the student executes the correct one under pressure, or you can drill in the principles that will fit all situations using the PLF as a teaching vehicle. If you look at the larger training methodology, one philosphy is a wrote memorization of a set of steps, perhaps without true understanding. The other is understanding of the why that if done correctly produces a thinking student who will be able to make decisions, not just react. CDR There won't be any time for thinking. PLF should be automatic. That's the point.

This is exactly the type of explanation that confuses students.
-
I'll do it, if it will convince you. I'll send you the video clip. In the meantime, please don't talk to any of my students.

Exactly. When I was 19, a half-blind old fart made a left turn in front of my motorcycle. That's when I was on the gymnastics team and working out four hours a day tumbling I didn't even have to think about it; I PLF'd over the hood of his car, then PLF'd over the windshield and once again as I hit the pavement. Walked away with minor scratches. Many skydivers would hurt themselves even practicing PLF's because they are not really limber enough to do them properly (hell, they can't even fit themselves into a 182 without hurting themselves!) ... too much beer The experienced guys don't practice PLF's during actual landings because they want to look cool and don't want to get their gear dirty. The students watch them jumping without ever doing PLF's, so it's nearly impossible to train the students to practice PLF's enough to make them automatic.

Her problem was that she didn't PLF a second time PLF's are necessary. Sliding on your thigh makes it much more likely that you will bust a femur. On a high speed landing, the PLF isn't over after the first roll, you need to be prepared to PLF each time your body is going to hit the ground. I wish I could explain this better. Anyway, PLF's have always been natural for me. I was a gymnast when I was younger. Trampoline and tumbling. It should be instinctive.

All skydivers I need your help!

I love it! Can't wait to hear the lyrics. My keyword suggestions: extreme, concentration, excitement, determination, courage, accomplishment Ok so that's six I use Jamendo as a source for many of the tunes I sync to my videos and I'm really glad to have found your stuff. It's great. Creative Commons licensing is the best! -
That is awesome! As mnealtx pointed out, there are easy calculators that will allow you to come up with a number. I would say that you should also consider the types of photos and the context in which they will appear. In other words, ask yourself to what extent your photos are uniquely suited for the article the magazine is working on. Check out the microstock sites and look at prices for similar photos that might also be relevant to the context of the article. If you set your price too high they might be able to find suitable substitutes for $10 each.

New Digital Rebel... this one's gonna be a hit
ChangoLanzao replied to pilotdave's topic in Photography and Video
I think those are very acceptable images. In many cases, the composition and lighting trumps the technical quality, especially for tandem customers who mainly want images they can post on the web for their friends to look at. There are many, many examples I've seen of lousy photographs taken with high quality cameras ;-) ... and that's just in my own "private collection" My wife can't figure out how to use the DSLR so she mainly uses a 3.3 Mpx point and shoot. But she has an eye for composition. While I was jumping at the Puerto Rico Freefall Fest a few years ago, she made a trip to a childrens petting zoo and took the attached picture. A few weeks later, she sold a print of it for $175 at a charity benefit . Really pissed me off. -
I don't think it's as much a matter of copyright as it is a matter of licensing. There should be no problem, for example, in using copyrighted music as long as you license to use/mix it permits you to distribute it via YouTube. There's a lot of good Creative Commons stuff out there that can be used this way.

Ive never really watched anything streaming from SkyDivingmovies. Just download first (so you have it on your HD if you want to view it again), and then play in a stand-alone player (instead of in a browser). Yeah I just edited my post. Figured that out
-
Ditto. Don't understood why it requires registration, so I never bothered. +1 ... I really wanted to see this, but the long wait is unacceptable. Weird, as downloads stream in pretty quick here from Skydivingmovies.com, and concidering its a free service (even if it did take longer) I wouldnt really mind. Bitching about registration being needed to use the site, while on a website on which you had to register to use it....thats just funny.. It took me half a minute to sign up for SDM.com and I always enjoy watching the new videos. Shame for those who cant look past the registration, as you're missing a lot of incredibly cool videos (to watch during work-hours) Hey, I wasn't trying to make any kind of general statement I've been registered for quite a while and don't mind the registration at all. Shouldn't have put the "+1" in there. Sorry! It's just that when I tried it last night, it wasn't working; Quicktime just hung there for five minutes. It was late and I needed to get to sleep and I was grumpy ...should have just stepped away from the keyboard. I managed to figure out how to download the movies anyway. I don't visit SDM very much because too many of the files are HUGE and I can't afford to use up my bandwidth downloading them in order to check them out. I prefer to use YouTube and Facebook because the streaming is quick and I don't have to download the whole thing if I decide it's crap and not worth watching I'm retired now so I can't use other people's bandwidth to download huge movie files I can't wait until it warms up here and we can start jumping (we're a teeny DZ of fair-weather jumpers) so I can try out my new CX100. I've had it for about a week and all I've been able to do is take movies of my dogs

I love shooting skydive video so much...

I sure hope his first AFF jump turns out better than that prototype! -

I think the manual says that it's only "certified" to work with 8GB or smaller sticks.

Pull force was ok when I popped it. I made a replacement closing loop that was about 1/2" shorter and it turned out good. Javelin.
-
Yes, that's the closing loop wrapped around the cutter.
-
Here's a better pic, I hope. Yes, this is the way it was in the container. I gently lifted the bag straight out, simulating a stable deployment. It did slip off, but it looked a little ugly. Who knows what could happen if the bag gets pulled out hard from the jumper's right at terminal. It seems at least a possibility that the line could have bitten the closing loop and prevented things from clearing as smoothly as we would like.
-
No ... really. I'm not kidding. I popped it and then pulled on the bridle, lifted the bag slowly and felt some resistance ... so I took a closer look. Scary, huh?

I recently received a rig to repack and found this.

Should Southwest Airlines (SEE THIS) lose their membership in the Air Transport Association.

Send him a bill. Add a late fee. Oh, it's way pasy that. I've taken to embarrassment. Last time I saw her at the grocery store I got behind her in line and asked her for a check when she started to pay for her items. I thought her head was going to explode. Well, maybe you should offer to let her pay you with her credit card next time?

Yup. Actually, the USPA, according to the group member pledge, can toss out a DZ for "ANY REASON WHATSOEVER', given 30 days notice.
