  1. That's good news! Did they drop the price when they dropped the cases? I hope so!
  2. Are you saying that there's such a thing as a perfectly straight pin, and that only perfectly straight pins that cannot be bent are acceptable?
  3. I'm getting asked this question more frequently now and I think the explanation at ChutingStar's web site is nicely done, so I'll be referring people to it too. I've been annoyed by the costs of the 4-yr maintenance and proprietary battery changes on Cypres units and even more frustrated by the length of time the servicing has taken. The 12-yr built-in obsolescence makes no sense to me (is there a good reason why Airtec can't just recertify the old units after thorough testing and inspection?). Anyway, I bought an Argus recently and plan to in the future. What really surprised me about the Argus was the damned aluminum case that it came in :-p Sheesh! I mean, is that really necessary?? It seems to me that it is probably adding about $25 to the bottom line.
  4. That looks pretty good for a backup camera.
  5. That is a great reply. With your background, can you give us YOUR stance on the situation ? I did.
  6. I've been lurking in forums since I was a FidoNet SysOp Way before the internet, and I have to say that one of the most entertaining aspects of all of this is reading discussions between those who are easily annoyed and those who are excessively annoying.
  7. I think a lot of people delude themselves into thinking that their safety is someone else's responsibility. Fortunately for us, the waivers tend to filter out such deluded individuals from the sport ;-) What we do is extremely gratifying, enjoyable, and beneficial to our existence. To imply that these benefits can be defined and weighed against the risks in a fully rational manner is what's crazy.
  8. The jumpers. Someday, if this keeps up, only people in the military will be able to afford to skydive ;-)
  9. Absolutely not! The system isn't broke. All it would accomplish would be to make rigging much more expensive for everyone involved. I would have to see a compelling case made (based on empirical data) for improved safety to be convinced otherwise.
  10. I'm with you. Good plan. I used to do a lot more continous shots until I realized that it doesn't increase the percentage of good shots I get I almost always do some camera raw work and cropping after deleting all of the bad and questionable shots. Holding down the tongue switch for long periods really just creates more work
  11. ... and jumps at turbine DZ's only too, I'd bet.
  12. So, does that mean you can name a good reason to go below 6500'? I think we got your point I think we got your point I think we got your point There was a glitch in the network or in the message board software and it triple posted ... hey, Bill, how about deleting my dupes too?? I can't.

  17. At 69 jumps, you should by all means consider a Sabre loaded at 1.3 a "high performance canopy". No. Not necessarily, anyway. I've put more than 800 jumps on mine and it still opens great. It looks good too. I'm a neat packer though, and I pack for myself 99% of the time.
  18. He said "should". So even he doesn't think it should be a requirement. edited to add: We don't need no more steenkin' requirements!
  19. It's ok to strap on a [cannon] DSLR, set it on auto-everything-except-focus, and go. You'll get many great shots that way too, and you might not have the slightest idea why some come out great and others don't. That's fine. Who cares? It's OK. The client is going to buy them anyway. So ... to answer the OP's question: Q: "I'm looking for settings for skydiving." A: Auto Everything (at least until Cannon puts a Skydiving setting on the dial). Don't worry that your camera manual seems to be unpenetrable . You don't need to read it. All of those special settings are for whuffo Photographers anyway.
  20. Yup! What's really cool is when you are familiar enough with your process that you can take a picture of a flower using your macro, look at the histogram on your LCD, zoom in to check focus and you know if you need to take another shot! Yee... I just need to practice more...

  22. IMO this is the funniest misconception ever. Hardly - by the time you shoot/process/print 100 rolls of 36 exposure film, you've made up the difference in price between the film camera and the digital - the digital pulls aways after that point. Oh I wasnt saying which is more expensive film or digital. I was just saying digital doesnt seem so free to me.. By the time you have spent 20.000 $ for your camera equipment, editing software, computer, monitor... you most likely will not consider that shooting digital is free. I see your point; however, I'm not so sure I agree. I used to have a darkroom and develop my own color slides and B&W as well as color prints. That was expensive! Also, you don't have to purchase a 5DMII in order to experiment with the basics of photography
