I see your point, but when I first started I was told that I HAD to do as I was told over the radio, even to the extent that there was a procedure for signaling an out radio if you didn't get some instruction by 1500ft .. at which point you were to signal no contact wait for instruction in case they just forgot to contact you, and then "your on your own" if you don't get instruciton by 1200ft the FJC coverd canapy flight, landing pattern etc and "on your own landings" should have been fine .. but if the radio worked you "had" to do what you were told Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.

Season starting, some canopy flight things to consider

Shouldn't this get him some talking to, maybe warned that ignoring the S&TA is not allowed, at least not without some discussion, if you really disagree with the S&TA maybe a quick word with the DZO should be standard before just ignoring him, and maybe a grounding should be standard if you try something new and potentially extra dangerous without talking with/getting the aproval of (or an overruleing by DZO) the S&TA Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment. -
on your first jump, do you have a choice? Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.

Survivors can now sue (new ruling?)
Praetorian replied to ltdiver's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Ok first, isnt it the responsibility of a "breadwinner" to make sure (his/her) DEPENDENTS are taken care of in the event of (his/her) untimely death?? Come On if you can't /won't take care of your kids why have them! Second I know once legal scum (not all attorney just the bad ones) gets ahold of an incident suddenly a stupid move by a student who was taught better and even passed an exam is neglegence on the part of the dropzone/divemaster/masterpyrotechnician but I really hate the concept of signing away (or being asked to sign away) my right to be upset and seek retribution for a deliberate willful negligent act, I'm sorry but I think our society needs to get to the point where when shit happens we deal, and our surviers deal, and when someone charges for a training using specilized equiptment they are required to (and can be held accountable) to have the training, to keep the equptment maintained, and to be aware of any potential problems with their employees before someone gets drunk gives a student useless out of date gear, loads them into an overloaded unmaintained plane and flys them to their death. "don't sign it, don't jump" fair enough but if waivers were less extreem, and attorneys and the legal system more open to understanding the difference between inherent risk/act of god/decesed's own stupid fault and "wrongful death" our society would be better off for eveyone skydivers and DZOs Scubadivers and instructors Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment. -
whats important (other then the instructor getting into position to give useful instruction) is did you or she ask WHY he advised starting your landing pattern high? if there was a reason good if not he should know that what he thinks is 1k is reading 2k to the jumper (and altimeter) I still jump with a radio but in my last 5 jumps it hasn't made a peep, I asked my instructor only to give me instruction if I apear to be doing something wrong to yell flare only if I'm gonna hit. so far no need and each landing was still closely watched and commented on (usually to my direct benifit) Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.

a lazy ass instructor (he later got chewed good by the DZO) gave my firend landing dirrections from 250+ yards away, I'll never forget hearing him say "flare" after I watched her hit the little hill he had directed her into, on her previous jump (which she stood up) he bitched at her for flaring too early and not listening to radio but at least on that jump he was withing 100 yards when he talked her down Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.

I like the skyhook system (and would love this event or something like it to travle to a dropzone near me (SDC) I'm curious about the altitude though, 2K is below my harddeck, why so low? Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.

cutaways..... inevitable?
Praetorian replied to sky_jumper22's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I just saw the video.. is this guy still jumping? his interview in that clip "it just riped off" NO you pulled the cutaway, the chute did just what it was supposed to do (I really hope he is land locked or really really learned from this) I also wish the TV program had asked an instructor to watch the tape to explain what happened! well that was a "oh shit moment" gotta give them both respect, good communication, intelect over instinct (I'd probably have cut instantly.. but I'm such a novice I've got no bussness doing a Mr bill anyway) Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.

cutaways..... inevitable?
Praetorian replied to sky_jumper22's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
anyone else have the mindset of trying to avoid them(cutaways) as long as possible, I've joked about packing my main like a paranoid wuss because its one thing I can do to decrease the chance of a mal, I see people trash pack all the time one had a line visable out of the container I pointed it out he opened the container stuffed it back in and closed the container ... I asked him WTF (as he was one of the people teaching me to pack and he had been so careful and helpful to me) he said somethinglike thats what reserves are for ....... so now I ask everyone WTF? only twoI know of I was told(which means nothing) that the jumper in one case turned the unit on while climbing in the plane (user error) and in the second the jumper dumped low .. but I could be WRONG Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.

SIM Recommendation for two canopies out.
Praetorian replied to genoyamamoto's topic in Safety and Training
I might be misremembering.. and about to set myself up to be torn.. But I remeber a 4th take home from the studies.. Similar size main and reserve, and the suggestion that the reserve should be smaller then the main, as this increases the chance of a biplane forming. (something that comes to mind every time I hear people talk about having tiny mains.. do they have even smaller reserves, or do they just accept that a mismatch increases the chances of entanglement with a two out) Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment. -
I understand the shot at "leading edge technology" but I have to disagree here, all the ground misfires were caused by something that really can't happen in freefall (if you get struck by lightning I think your AAD is the last of your concerns) I'm impressed with the responce. I like the company standing behind its product and presenting data to explain the problem(s) and solution(s) actually all? (I might be wrong) but I havn't heard anything about the screen problem with the CypresII certanly nothing about a free replacemnt with a "fixed" unit Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.

not that I disagree but why dont you think military jumps should count (or are you just thinking of static line overall )? Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.

Praetorian replied to Praetorian's topic in General Skydiving Discussions

isn't there a post about the cypresII screen going blank? maybe the same cause for both products? I havn't read about any recent misfires with either cypres1 or 2 but I remember the screen thing Good Judgment comes from experience...a lot of experience comes from bad judgment.

Ho Lee SHIP are you sure this wasnt a failed suicide attempt? damn thats impressive, more important then how low he pulled at what point did he have to know if he was gonna clear it or not and abort? would he know high enough for the chute to do more then make it easier to find all of the body?
