Really? How? Tell me the precise way anyone makes a million dollars without the assistance of lots of other people? Let's say I write a book. Ok, wow, that certainly SEEMS like the work of one person doesn't it? Well, writing it was, but certainly not selling enough copies to make me a millionaire. It takes thousands of people to sell that book and it all takes government infrastructure to make that happen. Further, if thousands upon thousands of people doesn't support me and buy the book, where does the money come from? So, tell me again how anybody makes a million dollars all by themselves? Are you trying to say that people bought and sold the books for the benefit of the author? That they we're doing him a favor? They their actions were a noble gesture to support the author? Seriously? They bought the book for the same reason he wrote it - to benefit themselves. People sold the books for the same reason the shops hired the people that sold the books - both parties benefit. So if everyone's actions are in their own self interest, why does he owe them a thing?

Wrong. I have been using FreeBSD since 1993. Mac OS X did not exist until 2002. He said derivative. I know BSD has been around alot longer than that.

The only BS is your statement about being "informed". You were comparing for-profit software to non-profit software. So, Let's see. 91.2% Windows + 5.0% Mac OS --------------------- 96.2% So, yeah, I was pretty close. I'd consider myself an informed consumer, and I chose Windows over all the others. Why? Because it works best for me. I can probably install and run anything that's out there, and I've used Windows, Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, Mandrake, Suse, Mint, CentOS, RH), PC-BSD, AIX, i5OS, Windows Server 2k, 2k3, 2k8, Novell, Solaris, and a few others which I'm probably leaving out. I'm not disputing that Linux is a stable OS - I'm sure Windows would be more stable if nothing ran on it too.

Umm... we're not. But people that run businesses generally think further ahead, otherwise they don't run businesses for long.

If you completely ignore the fact that they are making a choice to give their time, then I'd say it's a good example. I'd say that software developed by people who enjoying spending their time developing software is generally more reliable software. But better? Over 99% of PC users disagree with that statement.

Do you have a point or are you just whining?

Fortunately, here in the USA, our Constitution empowers Congress to pass legislation to prevent such selfish philosophies from prevailing. Without such "selfish philosophies" you probably wouldn't have a computer on which to type that statement. Considering my OS is a FreeBSD derivative, it could also be said that without communist-like FOSS philosophies, I wouldn't have a computer that does anything but flash a light to let me know whether or not it is powered on. I'm going to assume you're referring Mac OSX, an OS that was created by a for-profit entity. And your reference to communism in regards to community developed software is anything but accurate. While peoples' efforts may benefit the whole of the community, most developers probably wouldn't be involved in them if there weren't other compelling reasons to do so.

I feel sorry for people that work their asses off to succeed only to have the government take half of their earnings, and then vilify and blame them for society's problems while completely ignoring the positive effects that their hard work had on the same society. I could give a shit about the person that thinks they're entitled to the earnings gained by the hard work of the above mentioned people.

So who says you have to quit one job before finding another? I've never quit a job without having another. Jobs will be available if you don't kill the market for unskilled labor by instituting a minimum wage, The better-paying part of it generally relies on the ability of the worker to provide a service that's worth the higher wage. Also please don't confuse "unwilling" with it "not being an option". Raising minimum wage doesn't really increase anyone's wages - it just creates a situation where people whose skills aren't worth minimum wage can't get a job. Think about it - if it's going to cost an employer more to hire someone that they'll bring in for them, they can either hire them anyway and go broke or just not hire them. Given that businesses have to stay profitable to exist, what do you think they'll do?

It would be nice if it were fact, but in the real world, no such luck. So in which state are people not allowed to change jobs if they're not happy with their wages?

Text of H.R. 3200 - America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009

So basically the congressmen, etc.. that are saying the program won't keep people from getting private coverage are full of shit? "You can keep your current coverage" - True "You can't ever sign up for private insurance again if you stop it though" - The part they didn't want anyone to read before they passed it. The people that pull this shit need to be drug into the streets and beaten to within an inch of their lives. -
Well, if a higher minimum wage is better, then everyone would be ok right? If you look at someone working minimum wage that has a few kids and add in EITC, they'd actually be making lose to $10 - $11/hr. EITC is something I never really understood.
-
Except you're leaving out that fact that if they could pay them less, the employee would always be free to find work from someone willing to pay more for it. This isn't an issue with people who are capable of providing a service that's worth minimum wage. Those that aren't are now unemployed.

I just set up an ubuntu box at work yesterday. What would have taken me 10 minutes in windows took me nearly 3 hours in Ubuntu to get working. On one hand, if I knew linux better it would have been easier. On the other hand, if people want linux to be competitive with windows they're going to have to make it easy to transition to.

How do you know? Has pure anything ever actually been created and used? FWIW, I do think that pure communism works very well--in extremely small groups, like nuclear families. And I'll add that socialism works well in small communities, provided there is competition involved, which isn't a factor in a large-scale environment. If a city is inefficient in providing services it will have to raise taxes - in which case people can move to nearby cities that have lower taxes. The city must compete with surrounding cities to maintain it's tax source. If the majority of government is done at the state and federal level, this aspect of competition is lost, as people can't easily move to a different state or country without making a major change in their lives. It also provides more accountability for politicians and government officials, as it's alot easier to access local people than it is to fly to Washington.

Because, for the most part, "libs" don't like loud, deliberate, misinformation, no matter who says it. Most "libs" that I know prefer peer reviewed literature, original sources and rational discussion to fallacious arguments. Radio stations are primarily conservative because that's what their target audience is - people that listen to the radio, typically in the morning and afternoon going to and from work each day.

Hey, they've got to do something to keep the public attention away from the health care bill they're trying to ram through congress right now. Funny how someone lying in the federal government is only an issue when it's politically convenient for one party or the other.

Obama is not a US Natural Born Citizen
justinb138 replied to warpedskydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
For what it's worth, I believe that Obama was born in Hawaii. I'm equally at a loss to sort out why the standard records, which I'm sure have to exist, aren't being publicized. My theory is that it provides some distraction from important issues, and also an opportunity to paint anyone who opposes Obama's programs as a whacko conspiracy theorist. I'm kind of thinking the same thing. Better have people focus on this instead of the massive spending, unread bills getting passed, etc.. -

I think it's kind of screwed up that I have to have a valid birth certificate to get a driver's license here in CT where I just moved, yet it doesn't appear to be necessary to provide one to be president. On on hand I think it's kind of a pointless argument, on the other hand, why not just provide it? -
Those are the republicans who've controlled both houses of the state legislature for the last 12 years? And the governors office for 4 of those years? Oh, wait, those aren't republicans... It's California - even the republicans aren't republicans.

So I take it a belt sander is bad too? If you don't like castration.... Can you imagine the product warning label that would result from that lawsuit?
