"Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal" by Ayn Rand
AdamLanes replied to AdamLanes's topic in Speakers Corner
To quote Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, "My freedom to move my fist must be limited by the proximity of your chin." Freedom is not the same as anarchy. Have you read this book? -
"Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal" by Ayn Rand
AdamLanes replied to AdamLanes's topic in Speakers Corner
Ayn Rand definitely did not believe in "free lunches." Freedom must not be compromised! -
This is another example of a misinformed public. How does taking money away from drug addicts help the children? Alcohol is the real threat to an unborn child. Do you know why you almost never hear about crack babies anymore?

I was reading a book about propaganda the other day. Noam Chomsky commented that a high rate of propaganda should be expected in a democracy since power is maintained through the control of the people in a means other than by force.

"Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal" by Ayn Rand
AdamLanes replied to AdamLanes's topic in Speakers Corner
There is no easy answer to your question. First it is important to understand the definition of capitalism. What is capitalism? What is socialism? What is fascism, communism, totalitarianism? What is a democracy? Does the majority have the right to determine the fate of the minority? There must be protections in place to protect the individual's right to life and property. Your life includes your time, mind, labor, and what you produce. What you produce becomes your property. Does the majority have the right to arbitrarily enslave you and do as they wish with your life and property? Capitalism is the only economic system where the individual can be free. Greed is the desire to have something that is not deserved. How can anything be more greedy than to demand the individuals life or property? I think you will understand if you take the time to read this book! -

The US Government is a terrorist organization
AdamLanes replied to AdamLanes's topic in Speakers Corner
Good question! The post "Terrorism is not a threat", was not intended to mean that terrorists are not dangerous, but rather the idea that an economic crisis would be much more detrimental to the nation than an isolated foreign attack. -

Surely you are not suggesting that the US government followed a policy of free market capitalism in the 1920s? the year 1913 saw the passage of the Federal Reserve Act and the 16th Amendment to the US constitution (two tenets of communism; see Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto). The 1930s saw an increase in government interventions in the market on the mistaken belief that the market could be corrected with more government intervention, instead of realizing that government intervention in the market was the cause of the problem to begin with.

Illegal Immigrants and Unions - Businesses Better Bargain With Them
AdamLanes replied to lawrocket's topic in Speakers Corner
Although I believe that people have the right to join unions, it is equally important to protect the rights of workers who choose not to join unions. Do you think a "scab" is going to get equal protection where the police themselves are unionized? -
The best thing a government can do to foster a healthy economy is to follow a strict policy of laizze-faire. History does not look kindly upon fiat currency or deficit spending.

"Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal" by Ayn Rand
AdamLanes replied to AdamLanes's topic in Speakers Corner
The book is far to in-depth to give an adequate summary here. I was one of the majority of the people in the world that did not understand the true meaning of capitalism and its history until reading this book. The majority of the problems that people associate with capitalism are actually the results of government interventions in the free market and have nothing to do with true free-market capitalism. Individuals can be free only in a capitalist economy. -

I just finished reading the book "Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal" by Ayn Rand. It is one of the most insightful books I have ever read. I highly recommend it! -
Cats lay around, play, and nap all day, and you get to do all the work to pay for their welfare! Sounds like they already have a union!

Do "madmen" and criminals have a right to bear arms?
AdamLanes replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
More the reason that individuals must arm themselves to protect their life and property. -
The yugo sks comes with a grenade launcher, but the 7.62X39 ammo is no longer cheap.

Do "madmen" and criminals have a right to bear arms?
AdamLanes replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
The federal government arbitrarily turns many of its citizens into criminals thereby effectively denying them police protection from real crimes against life and property. Since these citizens cannot rely on the police or courts to help them for fear of their own prosecution, then they must arm themselves to protect their right to life. -

Constitutional Amendment Prohibiting Marijuana
AdamLanes replied to AdamLanes's topic in Speakers Corner
I concur. My call for an amendment to prohibit marijuana was facetious. My point was two-fold: First there should be an end to the War on Drugs, and second the US Constitution does not authorize the Federal Government to prohibit marijuana. -
Constitutional Amendment Prohibiting Marijuana
AdamLanes replied to AdamLanes's topic in Speakers Corner
Shouldn't there be a constitutional amendment to prohibit marijuana, similar to the eighteenth amendment which prohibited alcohol? I think the war on drugs needs to end, marijuana legalized, and drug addiction treated as a health problem not a criminal issue. The black market (for drugs) promotes the vast majority of violence and crime associated with drug use. The black market will disappear with the decriminalization of drugs. Why is it that we needed a constitutional amendment to prohibit alcohol, but not to prohibit marijuana. I know that states (for example) have their own laws, but what about at the Federal level? -
10th Annual UF Falling Gators Collegiate Boogie
AdamLanes replied to cbrkich's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Cool, I'm glad to see the tandems are being promoted. It seemed like two years ago there was a total lack of promotion. The collegiate boogie should be about the college kids, most of whom do not skydive (yet). Are you guys tabling on campus or putting ads in the Alligator? I started jumping with the Falling Gators back in 97 as a freshman. Although I didn't have the money to get a license at the time, I had so much fun that I came back to the sport when I did have the money. I know UF has dropped in the rankings of "party schools" since I graduated, but I'm sure the coeds still know how to have a good time.
