yes i suppose i do realize that such a speech is always "team-authored".. and likely changed here and changed there, a number of times, before it is Stamped 'approved' at some important persons' desk, and then passed around a lot, for other 'stamps of approval" at other important peoples' desks and on and on til it is "spoken" to the American people... typical government redundancy and ineptitude... this thread does at least touch on the topic of Science... Sadly Scientists and Politicians are veeerry different people, for the most part, and unless the science has some verifiable financial potential, for one corporation or another,,,the politicians do not seem interested in it... Scientists should be given the chance to see thier visions accomplished, to expand what we know as a society, to work with Mother Nature our environment, and each other,,, to make for a better world... Politicians, Attorneys, Insurance Companys, and Bankers...have had their time... they've failed us ( IMHO ) ... we hope for a pittance of funding and almost seem excited if we might receive it, when it fact the funding of research, medical advances, cures, and forward thinking Science, is Essential. and needs to be waaay at the forefront...of our investments. Science and education should go hand in hand, Enough of spending on this defense initiative, and that rebuilding concern,,, on the other side of the world.....we need a president who recognizes the value of capital which is invested in scientic advancement... mnealtx, however, is probably right, we're just going to see much of the same... i.e. high powered politicians influenced by big business..... soon though,,, soon.... The Scientists !!!! will have their Day !!! i just hope it's sometime before Armaggedon... jmy safety first... and what the hell, safety second too....

i really got a kick out of Gulianis' "plan" to concentrate on Fla. ...skipping campaigning in Iowa, New Hamp. S C. etc... pretty lame... EVERY one knows that New Yorkers want to be in sunny EF - EL- A... during january.. HE simply found a way to have his campaign contributers, cover all his expenses for a month in and around miami...Nice vacation. sly dog..... Now it'll be back to business as usual... making 100,000 $$$ speeches, here and there, and everywhere... beats working for a living.... jmy
-
i was wondering...."who wrote this speech"???? there is NO way that G W B composed that... he barely could recite it... lots of "we're gonna do this and we're gonna do that"..... change our energy policies, bolster the economy re-invigorate scientific research, continue with the education policy of No child Left behind..... Hell he called THAT a success,,, when just about EVERYone I know, who is a teacher, or is otherwise involved in education,, cites that policy as , " non-viable, underfunded, steering AWAY from learning, and TOWARDS techniques for better TEST-TAKING..." when will ANY president give a S of T U address. where he says... This is what we HAVE DONE.... these are the recent ACCOMPLISHMENTS we have already made... and not just recite another numbing 'wish list'... all the phoney baloney applause.....i didn't understand THAT either....... reminds me of a bumper sticker i recently saw...it said... " Blindly following Bad Leadership, is NOT an indication of Patriotism..." another year..... may it pass quickly... jmy

Mom won't let me go, how can I convince her?
jimmytavino replied to AlexEvanczuk's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
sorry Alex E. but i'm tending to side with quade's position here... a couple of questions.... 1. do you currently reside at your moms' home? 2. it the home also your dad's home..?. 3. of the 3 of you??? who is working to cover the costs involved with OWNING that home.? 4. were you "absent" the day that 'responsibility' was covered,,,, in 'class'? ..... now, i'm not saying that YOU are or aren't a responsible young man...since i don't even KNOW you... but as a Father/ Parent....i steadfastly ACCEPT the responsibility which was thrust upon me, when I had children,,,, and that is the same responsibility which your Mom evidently is aware of.......Your safety and well being is on HER shoulders...AND this IS a potentially dangerous sport... it's NOT some action type video game... replays are Not granted, after a serious screw-up, by simply inserting another quarter,, or hitting a replay button... so... Unless you are in an apartment of your own, and covering all related expenses, and still attending H School...AND concurrently working a part time job... then,,, sadly,, you should adhere to the wishes of your Mother!!!!... It's wonderful that you wanna make a skydive,,,, BUT sorry kid,,, this is a sport for grownups....... ( chronological grown-ups) ( if we amended that label to exclude, those who are not intellectually grown-up or emotionally grown-up, then MANY current skydivers might be left OUT ) -
back before using 3 rings.... I had an R-3 release,,,,, let go. just as I touched down...YIKES... since then... and since I have EVER used 3 rings.... I always!!! include a distinct VISUAL Look !!!!

always arrive at the DZ ,, with 1 .your rig packed. 2. your camera gear ready to go, ( batteries charged, tapes cued up, lenses and filters clean and attached) and... . . 3. a smile on your face..... confidently strolling to the plane or to the subjects of your video, while they are preparing to dirt dive, or are gearing up, looks FAR better, than scrambling around piecing together your Cam helmet, or looking for a battery etc.. some GOOD advice, which i learned right here in this forum,,, and which mirrored the patterns which i had already established... ... check your skydiving gear. Put ALL of it on, completely,,,,,,,, before turning to the cameras, be sure that pre cameras ritual includes arming your AAD if you use one, turning on your audible , if necessary, gathering gloves, goggles etc... THEN turn to the camera helmet and go through a check list there,,, as well... PS camera flying will require a good degree of "OFF the DZ " time and activity.. During the week, take care of cleaning, organizing, reviewing AND Cuing of any previously recorded footage, and of course boosting your batteries ( and you SHOULD own multiple Batteries)... be sure cam-eyes are working right, check the integrity of your chinstrap hardware, be sure all your cameras are OFF,,, when not in use... then when you arrrive at the DZ, you can be confident that you AND your gear, are ready to go... . . oh yeah..... have fun

but it wasn't proven right, either..... it was assumed, because they wanted it to be right.... more than 1 lie ,,, told 935 times...too there were a few lies,,, each told often enough to satisfy the whims of the Bush Admin.... .... who set as a goal,,,, waaaaay before 9-11 to 'go after hussein'... like gossip ,, the idea is to repeat something long enough and often enough, that whether it's right or not doesn't matter.. what matters is,,, IF people believe it's right...and humans,,, for all their so-called intelligence,,,,are very convinceable beings... and often accept things as true,,, without real proof.... ..Should we believe something on "say -so" ???? alone?? I should say NOT !!!! fear-mongering at it's worst... jmy

well in the world of SKIING,, i am a wuffo. i just got the feeling that the skier was put into a dangerous situation and simply exceeded his skill level.. ( though there was NO concrete mention of that in the O P ) BUT it could be that he's done dozens of such moves,,, and just caught a bad break here..... i was also trying to critique the response from the executive.... a sort of,,, "oh well" "que Sera Sera " , type of indifference...,,, anything to get the film done...and then simply praise the "collateral damage" sure enough there are risks in such activities. and perhaps those risks were assessed by Mr. Poole..... but we might not ever know the degree to which he was "encouraged" by others,,, or just How he felt about it, as he undertook the challenge... a more in-depth report would have been helpful jmy
-
"in this sport", the executive said, "death is part of life"... ... hmmmm.....Death as a result of an "over challenging" task.....is sad, and reckless. Here is a young guy, all full of energy and captured by adrenaline, in many of the same ways that skydivers are said to be drawn to the hobby/sport... " he lived the life of a big mountain skier " ( Whatever THAT is ) ,,,, "on just enough money to support his habit ".... hmmmm again... this coming from the man for whom he was 'working',, as he shot this film..?? now i don't know if this was a 'scripted' jump, or just ad-libbed by the skier... but sometimes the extra added enticement of 'being in a film', of earning a few dollars, of being able to pay the rent, can lure people into poor situations.... i surely Doubt that the Black Diamond Company executive,,,, was capable of such a stunt, but maybe the marketing dept decided it was doable...and sadly B Poole and his family pay the price... too bad. R I P edited to correct spelling jt

Spinning Linetwists Malfunction Video
jimmytavino replied to BrianSGermain's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
whew.....very excellent presentation... unique camera angle... I sometimes find myself with lines twists, though i jump a relatively docile main..... and as you suggest, I "get on It right away".. and can clear them... I've only just returned from 9 days at the very airport , over which your footage was created and right from the view of the "green water", when the door opened,,, I knew where it was... to see the runways, and the swoop pond, and the landing area, all over again , after having just experienced them in real time,,,, was a pleasure..... nice skydive, NICE music..... nice swoop..... have fun, stay safe, carry On....... jimmy from frontier -
good voice !!! bad concept ...a maxi pad " gets its' wings??"... ouch... ( almost made me wanna turn in MY wings....

" I'd rather take an Otter, freefall for 25 seconds, and find myself at Nine -Five. than to take a cessna, sit in the airplane for 25 minutes, and find myself at Nine-Five". " He who hesitates, Shall Inherit the EARTH " " Wind ??? what wind???" " Clouds??? what clouds???" " Carb Ice??? what carb ice??" " Spot ????? what spot ??? Get Out !!! " here are some from a long time ago... " hey man, would you stand tension for me" " did you hook up the bungees"??? i am the second born of 5 kids, which my parents had in '52 '53 '54 '56 & '57..... Boy, Boy ( me ), Boy, Boy, and finally a Girl ( our dear Sister!!! ) the oldest and youngest characteristics fit pretty close, and I and my 2 younger brothers, all tend to exhibit the "middle child" traits..... I started jumping when i was 19,,, and each of them,,,, as well as my Mom, thought it was pretty cool... Dad was rather less excited about the idea, but after a while he came around,,, even allowed me to make 2 back yard demos, during 4th of July Picnics..once in 1981 and then again in 1996. It was a big hit !!!

Man !!!...... you got a NICE brother..... jmy

heavy duty Arrow brand stapler 5/8th inch t -50 staples... takes a good squeeze to trigger , but sets the staple pretty well... if you're attaching to a riser, ( the vertical part of the stairs) it will be easier than attaching to the tread ( the flat part ).. since the tread could be hard wood,, oak etc .. and the risers could be pine... put good pressure on the stapler tool and squeeze off a few.....keep a hammer handy , to fully seat the staple, if necessary... good luck j t

Square hand deploy Pilot Chute
jimmytavino replied to jimmytavino's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
so as the ram air era began, and jumpers were switching to squares, those changes were coinciding with harness container updates, and safer ( for the most part) riser releases, and of course hand deployed Pilot Chutes.... well a local rigging loft began designing and building H / C systems to meet the demands of its clientele... the rigs, were piggyback,,, and had large main pack trays as well as reserve pack trays, since many jumpers were still perfectly happy with their round reserves and even round mains... the harness was custom, in both size and color,, and for the most part the releases were shot and halves or R3's... blast handle reserve and belly band mounted "throw-away" pilot chutes..... Since the "creative genius" behind the gear, ( who shall remain nameless) liked para foils, the rig included a square PC...Mostly as a Novelty....i guess... although HE said it was simply a good design... see pictures below well he must have been right!!! because they seemed to work just fine, and many people used them.... never recall a problem with them,,,, and they were lifting HEAVY D Bags, off our backs,,, pcs, paps, heavy early generation squares... I still have the P.C. but passed the rig to a friend of mine ( he said he could sell it...) and then lost track of it ,,and of him... was 1977... we are still waiting "for the TSO to come through" I hear it'll be "anyday now".... -
Post the 1st Page of your Logbook . . .
jimmytavino replied to NickDG's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
rather plain and undetailed... but here it is started with a blue paper back...i liked it because it had all the license requirements in it, and freefall tables then switched to a red one and re entered the jumps... of my first 100, 96 were out of a cessna,,, 180's 182's and a C 210.... the other 4 were from a Bell UH 1, Huey,,, at an accuracy meet, near west point Ny...May of '73 i started at a static line, cheapo canopy DZ with LOTS of members and new students, sooo we seldom went above 5,500 feet... ( equates to more loads a day) But i did go to 12,500 on Jump # 61.. That was the HIGHLight of my year... By 100 jumps, i had 21 minutes in freefall and crossed 1 hour in FF on Jump # 279 Did a good amount of jumpmastering in those days. so not much RW,,, LOTS of accuracy,,,( French Papillon.. 4 or 5 of us, had them,,,) built my first 4 way on Jump # 300 hahahahaha....... it was Memorial Day '75...and 4 months from coming up on 3 years of jumping. I had just graduated from college and i had one hour and 6 minutes in freefall!!!!!!....I had the world by the balls....!!!! . . . ( still do ) ... . . ps hit 2 hours FF on jump # 442... and it took until 584 to reach 3 hrs.... no wonder i couldn't fly worth a damn !!!! pps ( i'm better, now ) -
still sitting with it's nose proudly and properly Raised!!!... my guess is that this a DC-3 , which "water landed", had the right prop tear up a leading edge, hopefully finished in the shallows, with the cockpit above water, and everybody OUT Ok... While thinking about it, a bit... i wondered if someone used a winch or cable "come-along"... hooked up to that scrawny Tree,,,, to drag it up to the beach... After that????? well NOW you have a tricky task, on your hands....I wonder if it was ever saved... Oh... not real pleased to see what appears to be 'graffiti'...on such a noble bird... but maybe there is a story to that... jmy
