  1. no no no ..... there is a huge difference between getting out at 3,500 and starting to fall..... and busting through 3 -5 on a jump from 13 grand... you're only just STARTINg to accelerate on the H & P ... as compared to burning almost 200 feet a second, once you're at terminal velocity... follow??? so NO worries... it will take a while to eat up that first thousand feet.... often people get too carried away with "having to pull right away"..... Clear the plane, concentrating on a good body position, try to SEE the plane , as you exit... FEEL and HEAR the airspeed increase,,,, and Deploy....... you'll do fine.. listen to your instructors advice... you'll likely be above 2500 feet at opening... ...... sidebar... What is the effect of a "student cypres" on a H & P scenario,,, IF the exit is under 3, 500 AND if the student is slooooow to the pull...and DOES get 'low'?? would the AAD fire???. not sure what altitude the student AAD's are set to fire... will the AAD properly arm itself from 3 500 or do you need to be going at terminal... for it to operate as intended? jmy
  2. thanks for the history lesson guys..... i do remember reading the name Jim Arender and associated him with US Accuracy Team... that was during the time when name tags on reserves and helmets, were common... I do remember the Pioneer 3- Pin...made some jumps with one... nice harness, way better than a Four Pin !!! and Yes... they did have that distinctive bend in the ripcord handle... and on closer look , you can't miss the two which are shown on the first photo... as well as each of the corresponding housings... Notice the chest strap AND the bellyband!!!!! waaay before the days. of bellyband mounted pilot chutes... The second picture of the O. P ... is great... 28 Foot 7 T -U ... maybe a lopo,,, probably not..
  3. The when would be sometime around 1964. ?????were piggyback rigs used in 1964????? that was before my time... but i always thought that chest mounted reserves were the Norm...until late late 60's, early 70's when the early crossbow and other piggybacks came around.. but i could be wrong...... I WAS wrong,,, once... jmy
  4. good point(s) one of the reasons i mentioned that communicating the current altitude is helpful. I would say, that i would NOT wanna pull... right out the door..IF there is lots of altitude. but i sure wouldn't be hummin' it down to 2 grand, either....might rather pull a bit above 3.. to deal with contingencies...After looking, and waving. also a good reason to have IN Depth discussions at the DZ on a regular basis... not just on safety Day... maybe even post the guidelines in a few places... Off field landings are likely to be a part of such an exit, unless the situation allows the pilot to make a pass, somewhere near the intended spot..... and so people need to be aware of wind direction, and familiarity with the area, sure helps, as well, in order to have safe landings for everyone... stick together, consider it an emergency until everyone is SAFELY on the ground,,, and Hope that someone might be carrying a phone. to alert manifest as to everyones location and safety... a little pre emergency preparation will go a long way to turning such an event, into a good bonfire story, instead of an accident report... j t
  5. ... well i know a FEW things,,, and when it comes to Cheap.....i start thinking.... Internet service... insurance premiums, gasoline, groceries.....maybe lawnmowers... the LAST thing i want.. CHEAP.... would be Skydiving lessons..... hahahaha ever hear the term... "You get what you Pay for"???? look instead, for high quality at a reasonable and fair cost... cheap sometimes equates to cutting corners... not a good idea for AFF..... stay enthusiastic, but be practical in your search... extra money for a rig, that you are not correctly trained to use safely,,,,,could be better spent on a proper education in the sport... safety First,,, and what the Hell,,, safety second too... jmy
  6. ... now THAT is some swoopin' it resurrects the old term... "Turf Surf" j t " I think I'll just WATCH,,, thanks, anyway..."
  7. planning a demo??? there lots more to it than just " getting someone with a plane" ... and ANyone who simply HAS a plane, and is willing to let you jump out of it,,, sounds sketchy,, at best... barnstorming ended ,,, decades ago... lots involved in simply "making a jump" best to search for a dz somewhere nearby,,,,with professional pilots and regular skydiving aircraft...and then make some jumps THERE, so that your abilities can be evaluated and taken into consideration.... safety first,,,, and what the hell,,, safety second, as well.. jmy a 3914 d 12122
  8. it seems to me that LOTS of places are "looking for a plane"... and it also seems that " only a Few Aircraft Owners Have them".... I bet the owners might be good and tired of having every DZ within 1000 miles calling to get a plane,,, as though that's all it takes... My guess is that the OWNERS can easily place a plane, either long term or short term, By making one or two phone calls THEMSELVES... IF they want that..... Not sure how many of them are sitting there, thinking.... OH man... I wish some one would CALL so that I can make some $$$$ with this plane... having their names listed, as though they are a real possibility,,, seems to me to be an intrusion, by well meaning posters... resulting in many many unwanted contacts...of said aircraft owners...It could get to be a pain in the ass to have to say NO about 20 or 30 times a week..... it's a supply and demand situation,,, and the supply is far below the demand... factor in the logistics, uncertainty of volume, distances from owners' location to renters location,,,( i e costs involved for ferrying ) various unimproved runways and taxi ways, that some DZs operate from.... and it's easy to see why owners might be hesitant to send One million $$$$$ aircraft.. all over the place..... kinda sad.. but that's the way it is... i do not mean to rain on your parade, but this could be a real challenge good luck P S... if you do find one,,, consider yourself VERY fortunate... jmy
  9. not as a rule it may lay out for a short time, til i can pack... ( video guys are easily kept busy with .... well VIDEO.. ) but once packed, it's outta the sun, for sure and likely into the van, til the next load... I NEVER leave my rig at the DZ, have never used a locker there, and surely never forget it, leaving it laying out on a packing carpet, or anywhere.... overnight.... isn't that "rig abuse"???
  10. "lack of knowledge??? or training???" not if you've attended a Safety Day in the last few years... certainly this subject IS covered... Pilot is in charge... and he or She may very well have their hands full...depending on aircraft, situation, altitude, etc... Just like all E. P.s it can't hurt to plan, practice, and then even 'dirt dive' a variety of scenarios...and the Pilots who fly the jumpships, SHOULD take part in the practice... it always helps for everyone to be on the same page... good maintenance, and heads-up pilots, who don't waver from common sense flying procedures, should keep such emergencies from occuring... However, Once an exit command is given during an emergency,,, i would tend to think, in terms of , "we're all a team, here,, and we'll ALL safely exit..." Composure is the order of business and lower experienced students, or even some well seasoned fun jumpers, may need help or encouragement , even assistance,,, to get to the door... I M H O a JM or instructor or a senior jumper on the load, should see to the safe exit of everyone,,, following promptly... it shouldn't be an "every man for himself" situation....that can get chaotic.... if the pilot has deemed that he or she is better off without the weight of the jumpers, then all need to work together...in a fast, and positive manner... we can empty most planes in between 1 and 4 seconds, when at altitude. we should be able to do the same, in an orderly way,,, during an emergency, ( give or take aerodynamic considerations ) communicating the exit altitude between the jumpers , may be helpful , as well... good subject... it comes around evey year about this time...( safety day) jmy
  11. You don't have to give a shit to be a parent . . . I believe that some people are getting so busy that they are depending on the television and the video games to babysit their kids for them. ******** i agree 100% with you... hell ,,,technically any body whose ever engaged in unprotected intercourse could be a parent...*** But BEING BUSY is no excuse for causing someone to "not a give a shit about their kid" anyway... I was talking about REAL Parents... how about you speed??? do you have any children??? those who comment about lazy parents etc... may or may not have ever "walked in their shoes".... As for baby sitting , it's true that Tv and video games have been used that way... Television had the potential to be SO educational, so valuable , so entertaining, so able to start to create a safe and cohesive society .. and early on I think it DID... BUT In the past few decades, many many questionable programs and video footage, live, real, fiction, and non fiction have bombarded all of us with all sorts of varients that we've reached the point where we might be starting to really suffer from it... Violence, aggressiveness towards others, gun play, misbehavior,, often under the guise of humor.... all sorts of Freedom of Speech protected, drivel... it's gotten bad,, and i fear the internet will make things even worse than they already are.. It's a tough time to be raising kids,,, Thank God Mine are 22 and 24.... and doing well... ********* The fact that we have to have guards at the entrance of our schools with metal detectors and weapons checks is a tell tale sign of how lazy parents, the media, and aloofness have damaged our society. ************** yes you are right again!!!... we're on the same team here.... It's a damn shame that our schools have come to this... .. as in my first post here, manners matter... There - is that better??? ******** NO.. to me, better would be a harsher reality, at the HAND of a school appointed dean of discipline . No kidding, a properly trained teacher. who is able to administer pre determined' sentences for certain infractions... During My 'formative' years. you're damn right we would have a paddle, or yardstcik taken across our butts, or legs... and At Home it could be my dad's leather belt... Trust me that gets your attention....( of course this was during the 60's...) (Our children never experienced That. ) Sadly some kids, sometimes NEED a decent paddling.... But even non contact things can be used to deter a students misbehavior. hell Get a dozen, pushbrooms, and shovels and a few trash cans, and a create an 'after school chain gang'...to clean up the school property... create a socially embarassing sentence, the dunce cap comes to mind... anything... to elicit change...********** I still don't believe that gang mentality will work. It has the possibility of causing more damage than it dioes good. *********** basically, isn't the bully and his cohorts a gang???.. How's that working for Him..??? NOT too good I'd say...seeing as how he got tossed off the bus... so chances are a Retaliation gang, is gonna stir up more trouble than it solves... and simply drag you all down to a lower level... Stand above all this...*** Oh twardo... naw,, i never was into video games much, and have not kept up on them.. only know what i read, which isn't good... hell don't some of them trigger epileptic fits??? yikes!!!!! also not very keen on vince mcmahons concept of entertainment.. and many many youngsters are overly influenced by some of the professional wrestling dynamics..... i'm the first to recognize the athleticism needed to play out the 'script' of the match, and wow and wonder at the strength and agility of some of these huge men, but i can't get with the 'lack of mercy'. the slamming of one another, the maniacal performances, and certainly can't get with the portrayal of women and of the sexually charged atmosphere they create... but that's a 'whole 'nother thread'... j t a3914
  12. Well they should be ashamed of themselves !!! that's what...No body is perfect but a highlight in the life of many a person has been the birth of a child,,,, and if THAT can't spur one on to be at least semi- responsible,, then that is a sad commentary... ..... A parent who cares NOT for his/ her kids,,,is a certain issue, as well in terms of a kids' development..... Still it is in How the OTHER parent and the kid or kids respond to the Rotten parents' abhorant behavior , and how they bounce back from it, if they can.........that makes or breaks it...for the kids... Many a fine fine person grew to adulthood despite some ' ne'er do well ' parentage...and due to the love and support of the OTHER parent and of siblings... ------------------------------------------------------------ Are you talking Rodriguez parents or - like real parents - Real Parents...care for their children.... turtlespeed asks about what i hope is a very very small % of parents, out there... Not sure about the R Bros... jmy
  13. "why is it that kids can be so rotten to each other"? few responses gave an answer to your actual question... many good ideas on how to handle the situation, now that someone ELSE's child has unfairly provoked your son and each of you, his family... Why are kids rotten??? because some children have lost the basic sense of manners, which is always helpful, as we carry on our lives... basic courtesy and common friendliness, seem to be less important today, than in the past...in fact sometimes frowned upon... Sadly many kids get distracted by all the signals they receive, from movies, music, peers especially when "contradicted" in some cases, by what the parents are saying... Parents ARE trying to teach them important things, right from wrong, self respect and respect for others,,, or at least i would think that's part of a parents' job... But some kids get carried away with the self esteem/ self respect part, and deem themselves better, or more important, than those around them... Some kids make bad choices,,, like becoming a bully...and if it is at all supported by a cluster of "toadies" egging on the brute... then it can be real unfair to all the decent kids in the vicinity... I'm not qualified to get into all "the details" which brings this about..but a few certain children can cause chaos, in an entire school system... I suppose it may get down to socio-economic situations... Sadly many adults are sometimes struggling, in all sorts of ways... and when these adults are also parents,,, my guess would be some degree of distress filters down to the children...and the kid acts out... I'm behind the curve on Video games, but it's my feeling that they encourage over agressiveness,,, and tend to wind a kid UP ... i don't know of too many that would be considered calming.... Lack of plain old Physical Fitness might also play in... Kids don't seem to run around and Play outside, at alll like they did decades ago...a great stress reliever and cardio workout So maybe some kids have the day to day stresses build up in their lives...and make BAD choices in their behaviors... It's a complicated thing... and can even be viewed from a few economic points of view... 1 Parents with children, one or both parents working... trying to DO for their children, just making it. 2 Parents with children Not working, trying to do the best for their children, not making it. 3. Parents with children, Working, and making LOTS of money, trying to do the BEST for their children... Interestingly, each of these situations could produce Wonderful children or Problematic children... They key is in how the parents assume the "Mantle of Parenthood", as reflected in the way the children turn out... A Cohesive home with Mom and Dad, or a Single person household with a hard working and Loving parent..... and laughter and love, and a decent dose of mutual respect and adherance to manners, between all family members should result over time in the creation of a responsible person... When done under tough money situations the success is all the more important...Yet in cases where money was never an issue and the true character of a person sometimes shows through...If that person happens to be well full of himself or herself because of financial well being,,, and that "attitude" filters down to the children the result could be a self centered, 'what's in it for me', 'who cares about the other guy"..." I get what i want" sort of a pre-teen or teen ager and by then it may have gotten out of control.....Self confidence is one thing narcissism is another. Misbehavior has always been around , it helps to acknowledge that , going in, as we raise children.. Helps keep us on our toes to recognize it and distance ourselves from it. or do what's needed to have the problem,,,,, addressed once and for all... any other ideas why kids are the way they are....??? here in the 'new century'... jmy
  14. yes... our kids ARE an important part, of the manifestation of our Love... and as they get older My wife and i BEAM at what they've accomplished, and at how they've become responsible adults..... Nothing fancy, but for sure a card and something sweet, so that they KNOW they are loved... just like they were when they were toddlers, and pre-teens...
  15. first of all thank you for your Service in Iraq. and thank all those other Soldiers, with whom you work... .. It's good that you have skydiving to focus on, and to serve you as incentive to stay safe, and complete your tour..... May your first dozen or so jumps, after you return, be fun, challenging, and satisfying... As others here have suggested,,, wait.. before you Buy gear..... Get the peripherals, and then spend some $$$$ on coach jumps, and yes, even rental gear.... Then check with your instructors, as you move ahead to acquire your own rig... stay safe... good luck jimmyTavino
  16. not sure if i can buy your argument... PHYSICAL prowess, size, agility and a strong arm can get Brett out of a jam,,,, if he makes a "mental mistake", or a misread... But, the job of being an NFL QB,, does hinge on size and Physicality, which IS a trait, more likely achieved by a man , as compared to "most " women..... However Brain power, intuition, and , dare I say it??? emotion.......... are some of the traits needed to be a good leader.... along with a fair degree of "experience"... the type of which CAN be accumulated, as a bystander with "an inside track" to a current leader...i.e. first lady... The mistakes that B Clinton may have made,,, either as a pres. or as a husband, surely had an impact on Mrs Clinton....as did his accomplishments... Knowing the right way to approach something, allows one to recognize the wrong way... and while I won't say that I am "devoted " to her, or even a Huge fan..... I will NOT dismiss her, based on hearsay, innuendo, or attacks which she has had to endure, from Politically motivated opponents... Brett is one of the best... Don't know anything about Mrs. Favre... but your comparison is not valid... Never underestimate the THINKING ability,,,,of anyone, based solely on their sex..... Men have had the lead in High Political office,, for all 200 + years of this countries' existence??? How are we doing??????? Not too well I welcome ANY candidate who will work for the common man, and NOT for Large corporations, Big business, Banks, or Insurance companies... j t
  17. hahahah just started my day with a cup of coffee,,, and these videos!! cool frog..... cool music.. very creative. thanks jmy a 3914 d12122
  18. ...well we all have to work somewhere.... and so it is great if it can be at a place where we are happy, and productive... best of luck for your interview.... my fingers will be crossed for good luck... jmy
  19. i feel the same way about my kids,,, as I do about ANY close family member... Once or twice,,,they really SHOULD make a skydive,,, IF THEY want to... ... and in my opinion it should be tandem and it should be with the tandem Instructor of MY choice... hahahaha ( honest).... that's how it has been when My daughter, my Son and My wife and my brother all enjoyed their # 1 skydive...... I went with each of them,, but frankly i was a little nervous, and it was NOT just another jump... would I like to see them "get into" the sport.....??? maybe Not.... if as little at a twisted ankle were to occur... i would feel responsible and sad... as it turns out each of them was well satisfied with their successful Jumping Experience, and each has been happy with the one skydive... jmy
  20. Grandparents are really special.... because to them....... .... grandchildren are really special... Now she shall watch lovingly over you and all your family members... find peace jimmy
  21. ya know something Billy...??? i do believe that Chris Palmer worked with Flutie as well,,, either At BC or later with the Patriots,, and yes for sure !!!! 4 hours of "boring " for a few minutes of "action" and speaking of boring,, how about ALLLL that nonsense ALL afternoon,, leading Up to the game!!!!!.. well i guess it's interesting to some people...
  22. just a great game, unless you're a hard-core Patriots Fan... and I loooong ago gave up being a "do or die" Fan of ANY one team... sports history proves that at one point or another, EVERY team WILL disappoint... However I am a Fan of the game,,, many games in fact, and while I'd prefer to be out there PLAYING,,,,as we did during our youth,,, I can enjoy watching any well played game... I cheer for good plays,,, teamwork, unselfishness and Good judgement,,,,, the NY Team came out like gangbusters,,, Ran the ball.. made 3 3rd down conversions,, or was it 4??? moved the ball and scored... Very good start to the game... Then when the Giants defense ruled!!! in the New England backfield..... suddenly the Mighty Pats. seemed vulnerable..... I was surprised at the low score, and truly felt like New England would prevail, when Moss caught the TD pass....in the 4th quarter... However, his Over jubilant gesturing made me shake my head and think,,,, "be careful here,, Randy,,,, YOU aren't the end all be all to this game......and it's NOT over....don't jinx it """ ( maybe the Pats scored TOO early,, and should have maintained possession,, another couple of minutes, and THEN score,,, But Hey !!! i'm not in charge!!!!! ) So then when Eli took that team, and danced around a near interception, a near missed first down, a near SACK, a "chuck it up there pass",,, was BLESSED with the most amazing and well videoed catch i ever saw.... ( How that ball didn't hit the ground, or get batted away,,,, I'll never know ) and then found Old Plaxico !!!! in the corner,,,, well that's the stuff that SUPER Bowls !!!!! SUPER!!!!! BOWLS are made of..... Oh yeah Tom Petty and the boys were pretty good too... but i couldda lived without freefallin'!!!! Ps Joe Buck and Troy Aikman did a good job. P Ps... I grew up with the guy who is now the QuarterBacks Coach for the Giants... He is Chris Palmer,,, truly the man behind the man. Chris has been a pro coach now for maybe 20 years, after 10 or 15 in college,,,, and was recently Head Coach for the RE- established Cleveland Browns 4 or 5 years ago...had a few wins... he's the oldest of 6 brothers, and we played sand lot ball together... between his brothers and My brothers, we could play 5 on 5.... hahahahaha Now he has a Championship ring!!!!!Way to Go Coach Palmer!!! jmy
  23. wow..... well you sure gave a thorough and complete answer... way better than the guys' answers Hey !!! you're an Eight Way team !!!!! do they all skydive?? can I be your cameraMan???
  24. agree... etrade. the 2nd commercial for them was good too... where the baby has made so much $$$$ that he 'bought himself a clown".. That was funny... and the adult voice out of the babies' mouth,, was good, and though the lip-synch was a little bit off.... it still held the viewers' attention... jmy
  25. could be that the marijuana is a symptom of the real problem.... sounds like the boy needs a hug,,,and then a serious and stern dose of verbal encouragement. it has to be emphasised to him, and the sooner the better, that there are friends and teachers who will help him address any issues he may be feeling..... and it sounds like he's dealing with a lot of stuff... too bad... It is awfully tough today, to be a youngster coming up through high school and entering adulthood,,,,, awfully tough.. I'm not sure i could do it... So sure. tell him all drugs are NOT good for you... and someone may need to point out that they are Insidious,,,,,, that means they try to sneak up on you... it's real important to resist, it's real important to re-connect with his studies,,, he needs to be made aware of that This is a crucial time in his life, and THIS will be his test of Personal Responsibility.....and of Character.... Someone needs to challenge him,,, and in a non -confrontational way... Do not let him play the victim, find a way to re-inspire him.... certainly sitting on the bench won't help,,, nor continuing possible rumors about heavier use...especially if that is not true.... The young man needs his friends now, to rally a bit, and yank him back up to reality, so that he can make himself proud....and re-establish himself in the eyes of his peers and his Elders... Maybe a coach or a teacher, or even a teammate, can be the one to start that verbal encouragement... good luck... jt
