would you jump your kid's pack job?
jimmytavino replied to dropzonejunky's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
absolutely NOT... neither of my kids , has any idea..... of how to pack... I would however jump a pack job , if done by any one of a number of "other people's kids"... at our club... who DO know how to pack... jt -
valid points i shall stand 'admonished' about my earlier comments..... i was only going from my 'gut instincts', based on what i have seen of him in the media... and yes... i WILL recognize and hell, even admire what it takes to pull this off..... It's not my cup of tea... but then i have always stayed well down, inside the envelope, merely peeking out from the top...and have always dared NOT... to flirt with the edges,, and certainly never was one for Pushing It. my intent was not to be negative,,,, i'll say in this post what i forgot to say in the earlier one... "Good Luck...Best Wishes for Success...". jmy p.s i have NO problem with being second...or third for that matter SBS, as long as I did my best and stayed true to my challenge... Please don't misinterpret that , to mean I have no drive...awesomeness can take on many forms.....right???

A lines then B then C, and then... I split the tail, flaking out each side individually pull the lines tight, keep them in the middle and center the center panel of the tail,,, welll in the center... the key though, is to clear the stabilizers as well... and work the fabric out to each side. I do this before getting to the tail... then, bring up the slider and seat it well against the skirt... Care is needed when you then, S -fold the canopy. keep it orderly,,, don't lose track of any of the lines... bag it... sorry for the lack of pics... jmy p.s. i no longer call it "flat packing",, I call it "Pre-Pro" packing...

.... somethin' about the guy.... that i don't like..... seems kinda like a spoiled kid, who needs to "be first"... not only in any sort of accomplishment, but also in terms of getting attention..... does he have the requisite 'respect' for all those who came before HIM.....????? or for the sports of B A S E and Wingsuiting???.... i'm NO expert at either discipline, but a lot hangs in the balance of this supposed, 'event'... jmy

i think that clear polyurethane sealer is used for such bar tops... It takes multiple coats... and in some cases an 1/8 inch or more, of build up... Maybe band the edges with rigid cardboard to serve as a "form" Apply 2" clear tape the entire area of the form, where it contacts the table, both inside and out, to facilitate removal when dry, AND to seal against loss of the poly, when it is added... then pour the 'clear' onto the table and allow LOTS of time for it to set...maybe use a fan to keep the air, moving... best to do this maybe in a garage, or if weather allows, outdoors... because of fumes. Sealers like this can be sanded and the edges can be shaped, if needed, once dry, but such thickness could take days to set up...so be patient... then a final light brushing, as a finished coat. and you should be good... Gloss poly, seems preferable to satin, for this application... .... maybe a sealer over the tile and grout, before the polyurethane,,, so that there is no interaction between the grout and the clear... check with a few paint supply places...and sure check with whomever may have knolwledge about the bar at L P ... enjoy your 'work of art' table.

things are whatever we make them to be... " Door of Fear" sounds like a video game

glad they got out... too bad about the bird... 1.2 billion is chump- change, compared to over 1.2 TRILLION that went up, or is going up in smoke.....over there in Iraq... plus the loss "over there" also includes thousands of american and coalition MEN and Women, who have either died, lost limbs, or lost their minds........ ALL of it is a tragedy....... including this bomber... interesting that it crashed On the airbase... any word if it was during a take -off?? or landing??? what was the altitude for the ejection...??? ( Good thing those seats, shoot UP.... especially if the handle is pulled, WAAAY below "cypres firing altitude") war mongering DOES have it's price... rant over jmy

hmmm ... interesting... well I suppose that good body position at deployment, might lessen the chance of an issue. IF something DID catch, it looks like the camera or the mount would just break..... not sure of the effect of that on the canopy,,, but better to let someone Else, "test jump it" ..
-
wow i hope the person you saw using it,,, wasn't skydiving with it... ok.. maybe the top mount, but absolutely NOT the side mount... i don't use ebay much, except for once in a while "perusing"... but it seems that any one can say anything..... Is there no quality control, or it is strictly Buyer beware.??? For a person to advertise THAT arrangement as a skydiving camera, is "wuffo- wishing", at it's finest.....and maybe even a legal liability. I'll leave the technical analysis to those more qualified. It might work for some things,,, but looks snaggable as hell to me, for use in skydiving... Maybe you could ski with it...maybe... jmy

my personal evolution of pistachio eating... ... put a nickel into a bubble gum like machine and get 6 or 7 Red pistachios. break one open, eat it, use half of the shell as a tool to crack open the rest,,, get "red " all over my fingers, dig in my pocket for another nickel .....realize that red P nuts are available at the market, in a box , like the boxes of candy at the movies, also red. less than a dollar..( share them with my brothers,,,or my little sister, if they asked nicely.

Amen to that... that's why a later post of mine, in this thread, mentions Printing and POSTING of said procedures..... so that anyone on the premises would be able to avail themselves of the "knowledge and game plan"...EVEN if they already "know SO much that they need not attend a safety day seminar" since such attendance is only "recommended" and not mandatory...lots of folks think it's just for novices... Though many an old timer has contributed an important point or two,,,, during the course of the seminars which are held on that day... jt good thread.

problems??? uh oh.. CPU's...and RAM, and processor this, and notebook that... and a list of details from skyD. a mile long......... HOW i miss the days of yore,,,, with nothing more than a radio shack mixer...( $29.95) a VHS deck, a cd player, a monitor and a bunch of cables..... and Voila' !!! a finished video, and a smiling First Jump student..... Seemed like we could deliver them within 20 minutes of landing as well , instead of 'mailing them' later in the week...and then go up and do it again..... well i suppose this is the way of progress and as long as technology marches on and images can be captured and saved in much sharper formats, we should do what we can to keep pace and deliver the finest finished product available...

i REALLY liked this film and saw it when it was first released..... Only negative comment .... and I mean this seriously. It should have had sub titles... so that the viewer could understand what the characters were THINKING..... Good costumes Good Concept Rae Dawn Chong ...... and then Geico went and "ripped Off" the the idea......... jmy

false mother nature discovered fire... it's in volcanos and can be a by product of lightning... it has been scorching our planet since ... forever. it's always been tough to control but Humans, and pre humans may have learned to do just that. Controlled use of fire is different from "making fire", and i always thought that Peking Man is credited with making fire...... That however was only once hominids had progressed, not only in populating the planet, and speading out from Africa, but also in cranial capacity and in some early organinzation skills, such as collective communities... mosty hominids are social animals. It may have taken many many generations of migration, and diffusion across the face of the globe and as Man became able to make fire, by then populations had reached modern Day China... Leaky's work and discoveries in Olduvai Gorge were of fossils, deemed to be "pre -humans" from 2 million years ago... They were Bipedal, had a skull which sat on Top of the backbone and had great use of the arms and hands,,,so there no reason that they couldn't have scavenged a burning ember, log, branch etc... I'm guessing that wildfires, caused by lightning might have been a common thing, and as fire passed, and faded away, it sure seems likely that some of it would be "gathered" or collected,,, and then fueled and monitored, so as to provide light and as a by product, heat... If the fire died,,, the groups would be faced with waiting for another collection opportunity... a million years passes slowly... but humans and pre humans do have the abiity to share ideas, behaviors and to track as a group,, what works, and what doesn't work...Not sure if those pre humans from 2 million years ago used fire... I don't think that the current great apes use fire either..... Great apes are Not humans Humans are Homo Sapiens Sapien..... It seems lilkey that some control of fire has to become a standard, in any successful group of humans or pre humans. I expect that there is evidence of fire pits in many an archeological digs, only not sure how far back they go... Being able to Make fire,,, either by friction, or flint knapping came later.....and is a whole HUGE step forward... It may have been discovered by accident... and as a result of interacting with the environment... maybe a piece of wood was being "worked" to create a bowl or vessel, and in the course of repeated scraping and rubbing,, the worker noticed heat.....or a bow and string was used to create a drill effect, wooden stick to wooden base... Or as time progressed and stone spear and arrow heads were being perfected, a worker chipping away at cooperative stone blade may have been blessed with a spark..... literally,, a spark which may have even burned the worker. So then the process to re create the event would begin, and once they figured out that different materials have a better or worse, "spark capability" and zeroed in on the ones that worked...then it was simply a matter of connecting the dots, having proper tinder on hand, a little puff of Oxygen,,, and Viola'!!! fire... interesting topic. thanks for all the links. jmy

at 1000 feet...yes you could and yes I would... as long as your main remains untouched... but remember to concentrate strongly on your exit body position, no need ( or time ) to be flailing , or tumbling an exit...we would want to deploy that spring loaded pilot chute, cleanly off our back and in a body position which limits the chance of creating a burble on our back... i'd wanna try for head high, facing Uphill and into the prop( s ) right out the door, and getting flat as the silver is pulled...as opposed to say, a diving exit.... prepare for a PLF, if: you have an OUT landing, your reserve is smaller than your main and you have the added 'suspended weight' of your main, still in the container... let's hope that any unfortunate aircraft emergencies, if they must occur, occur at well above 1,000 feet..... jt

Are we becoming more Barbaric as Americans?
jimmytavino replied to goofyjumper's topic in Speakers Corner
... well each person is different but as a group, Americans are being more desensitized to it , than ever before. Instant news from around the world, video and audio feeds everywhere,,, bring to us, events, behaviors and calamities which used to escape our eyes... There is some real tragedy going on in parts of the world...and what we see in the news and in filmaking in general, as we go to the movies, keeps pushing ahead our "shock level"... what once would revolt a person, is now common in PG 13 movies...and as children grow up in our world today, they see more and more such images..... So the more barbaric behavior we see the more we might be likely to accept..... Look at the current group of Oscar nominations... I know its film making... but we honor a rather brutish merciless cruel Character and the film which brings him to us...Fine acting I guess..... but a cold glass of water, in the face, to some... I learned quite awhile ago that life can be cruel and idiocy guides many people as strongly as intelligence . If we can believe the news there IS some barbaric stuff, happening in this world... massacres, military juntas, religious leaders vying for power...struggles for food, water, and shelter, and struggles against disease and dirt poor poverty...especially in Africa and parts of Asia..... Barbarism . murder, hell,,,,, raping and pilaging, burning..... all that crap,,, seems to be growing instead of diminishing.... and if you classify religious fanatics and suicide zealots, I'd think that classifies as barbarisn... Americans are damn lucky to be where they/we are and in fact the government should be working to reduce and phase out a blight to our common world wide good... Instead our leaders have further fueled the issues in parts of the world where there is resource riches, and turned a blind eye , where people literally wither away, from illness fatique, starvation and despair..... So YES... i guess the whole world is becoming More barbaric... the key will be to insulate ourselves and those we love,, from any future negative impact of it... jt -
whenever you fly in groups,,, and TWO jumpers can count, as a 'group'... you are flying 'relative' to one another.... this can be done either, 'flat',, as in the traditional skydiving body position. or in a sit, head down etc... I. E. free flying..

How did you're first Hop & Pop go?
jimmytavino replied to Sletzer's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
thanks for your insight... i did earn a coach rating a few years ago... used it some, but sadly have not been as current as i would have liked.... and Honestly , today,,, i was not certain of the student cypres firing altitude.. that's why i asked...( i know the parameters of the AAD which i use,,,it THAT ok??? ) i guess i am/was better suited to jumping with novices 20 and 30 years ago,,, when i would gladly serve as a base, for anyone, ( buying my OWN lift ticket),, so that THEY could learn, and develop confidence.. did that for years and years and years..........waaay before any ratings, like coach AFF or even tandem....were around... sorry if my memory fails from time to time, and I have to ASK a question... thanks for your thoughtful comments. jmy a 3914 d 12122 uspa # 9452 -
