1.) What made you want to go skydiving ...never was in a plane before...so i was looking for an airplane ride 2.) What did you feel prior to jumping out of the plane ...was busy enjoying the view...so i felt pretty good. i was "ignorantly blissful" 3.) What was the free-fall like ...like falling free. 4.) When you touched down how did you feel ... landed 15 feet from the target, using a 28' round,, ( cheapo) so i felt DAMN good... 5.) been using a cypress for about 5 years now// I set it.... AND my brain kicks into the mode that,, " I have an armed cypress on my back..." i never forget it, and i never rely on it.. that thought was definately NOT forgotten, on a jump a couple of years ago... I had been out of action for a while and went to the dz on my "skydive birthday" since i felt ready to return to the air... had a great H & P from 5 grand , repacked, and went up with 6 pals for a RW dive... It went well. and I was pretty charged up,, at separation time, i and another friend lingered for a couple of seconds, for some grins, and smiles... away we tracked, lower than we should have been... i went to deploy,,, could Not find my P C handle... hmmm... tried a second time... No Joy... ( bad right arm,,,poor "behind the back reach"...) I shoved my container bottom with my left hand, in order to try to put the handle into my right hand,, and in doing so, dropped head low, and into a serious dive.... My Mind FLASHED !!! " whoa.... I AM cypress armed,,, I am getting waaay Low... do NOT want a 2 out.... I sure don't want my cypress to activate..... MUST beat that AAD to the punch.....!!! and punch i DID.... My left hand to my reserve ripcord.... BANG !!!!! smashing Opening on my reserve... My alti. read 1,200 feet...... ( idiot) the main remained un activated, in it's container... landed ok. my buddy, landed near me... He's a rigger, and while he was telling me he had my freebag spotted, ( so did I ) my only concern was to ask him... Will Ya' check my cutter???? did it fire??? I think i beat it to the punch..." He verified that indeed the cutter had NOT fired... i was literally 2 to 3 seconds away from an activation, and if i had continued trying to get the main out...i couldda been in some hot water... so YES I am aware of my AAD all the time... but NEVER wanna see it fire, unless i am incapacitated.....I mean REALLY incapacitated... I did have a serious shoulder dislocation on exit, back in '05... but even then I pulled my reserve,,,, and above 3 grand... ( i had 10,000 feet of freefall to figure out what to do,,, since my right arm was flailing around over my head, and did NOT respond to my repeated attemps,, to check and see IF i could reach my main handle...) so My attitude is SET it, Remember it's set. BUT always plan to activate a canopy deployment manually... If an AAD triggers your reserve, AND you are NOT unconsious (sp) .. then in my opinion, you fucked Up... set it but don't forget it... only don't obsess about it either... AND get a canopy out Waaay before 1,500 feet... todays technology is very good,,, unlike years and years ago.. The old FXC's and Sentinals while ok... did have the capcity to fire when NOT wanted,, I.E. above 3 grand... I knew of a couple of misfires, ( or Mis calibrations ) that put out a reserve, which reulted in a collision by a jumper in freefall, above the one with the AAD... naturally,, the poor bastard who hit the reserve was NOT aad equipped, ( this was 30 yeares ago ) and never deployed... of course technology is far advanced today.. ......... as to the poster who has 20 rigs, and NO AAD < i'd guess I'd sell off a rig or two, and GET a couple of AAD's..... but to each his own... and for those new to the scene... it is an important part of our gear... and nowadays,, really SHOULD be considered as needed.. IMHO jimmy

real good explanation kk... thanks. now if a 2 out goes from a side by side, to a point where say, the main is splitting and about to head down...... and a cutaway has been decided on..... does it help or hurt??? to go right hand on the cutaway pad and left hand on the outside toggle, or outside rear riser, of the reserve , to further initiate a move away from the main as the 3 rings release???. .. i can see that we wouldn't wanna have a hand on a main toggle, as we cut away... but how about the reserve ..? or is it better to chop, then assess the situation, and get onto toggles or risers as needed? jt

The trouble has come forward in the last few hundred years or so, ( 4 or 5 hundred if you figure in european expansionism and colonialism.. ) as other parts of the world have encroached on the area which was once Persia, corrupting the cultures, stripping the value and resources, "enslaving ' the people, and wielding "influence" where it was not wanted. Enter the USA, in the latter half of the 20th century... I seem to recall that we funded, encouraged and supported the former Shah of Iran.... a man who lived in a Golden House, with immeasurable oppulence, and who simultaneously, was so drunk with wealth, that he let his own people suffer poverty and loss.... Iran is located in a Pivotal geographic crossroads , between eastern europe, It borders turkey...and souther asia, it borders pakistan. it has more coastline on the Persian Gulf than the next 5 countries, combined, and it shares many hundreds of miles of border with Iraq... The new president cannot in clear conscience demand a halt to nuclear power, simply "because we said so"....... we should understand that nuclear bombs are not a certain byproduct of nuclear technology.....but a possibility.... There should exist by now, a worldwide monitoring system which tracks such developments.....and nuclear to generate electricity, seems acceptable to me... Our president should expect respect, because we offer respect..... not because we DEMAND it.... Our president would do well to recognize that WE ( the USA ) have not been ordained as the official World's babysitter.....and would do well to work together with other countries, and not in defiance of them...the term unilateral comes to mind .. Strength through compassion, and common sense, and consideration of the culture and histories of other nations can go far towards changing the way that these other countries view us... The president should communicate, to best determine the proper course of action. And should work for peace.... peacefully... Why.....???? because the very Life of this planet depends on it. We can remain a bunch of individual and seperate countries, each more arrogant than the next,, China, Korea, included... ( But NOT Australia,,, Australia just might be the model by which the others come into step....) or we can work toward what i feel is waaay overdue... a World community, wherein countries become more like provinces, or districts of the greater whole,,,namely the planet earth..... that's why.....

I'm with you, NWFlyer...... expanding our limits in terms of curriculum and training, , and improving technology, is where it's at.....

You've heard of Parental Oversight of TV Viewing ???? ... well our MOM had that stuff dialed in, Forty Five years ago !!!... we also could not watch that innocent Little Jay North.... as he played dennis the menace.....No deal... at our home... I think my folks , both, knew we were pretty quick to catch onto things, and would be running around smacking each other, or poking eyes, or setting off explosives!!!! of one form or another... my 'viewpoints" are usually in some form of transition, as i learn more about a subject, or as i listen to other points of view, in an accepting and rational manner... i learned a while ago, that NO one is right about everything. and often two seemingly opposite points of view, can each have valid justifications to support their positions...but i will respect the rights of others to have views which are opposing to mine... very little in the world is simply black or white... this or that. I generally "care" enough about people to allow "to each his own"...but that does not mean that i would blindly accept or endorse all positions... and my 'caring' does not extend to the point of changing my feelings on certain subjects, simply to accomodate those with whom I may be discussing a subject... Life would be pretty boring for me, not to mention 'wishy-washy', if i was not true to my own convictions... but stubborness, especially stubborness borne of ignorance is very unflattering, and "sticking to your guns" doesn't work, when you are shooting yourself, in the foot. ... so, in general i can care for others without necessarily caring for what they say, or how they say it,,,,, or where they stand on any given subject...... jmy

Congratulations Tony..... How many Pack jobs????? ... I liked when your profile was set up so that your Jump number(s) was the SAME as your D Lic. #... pretty cool... ... you may have mentioned it once before but... where??? did you start skydiving... i like that you did a static line jump....as well as a tandem on your first day.....Very considerate of " the olden days" plus you got a great taste of freefall AND canopy control all on the same day...

some time ago there was a forum post, of Just That... i believe it was a photshopped image combining the Falls, and a canopy swoop.... One time,,,,a bunch of us , from our club, who were bored during a cloudy and drizzly day, DID head over there, for the "Niagara River Jet Boat Ride"... ( different from the "Maid of the Mist" excursion) It was a BLAST..... 40 or 50 people, in an open deck boat, which had some REAL Horses... and could drive upstream, no problem.... Amazingly the waves in that river are 4 and 5 feet in height, and the boats get swamped,, every few minutes... then the water drains away.. we had been encouraged to bring a change of clothes, as the ponchos which they issued, mostly helped to KEEP our clothes,, soaking wet!!!! hahaha... The drivers/pilots are good !!!,,, and took us right up to the waterfalls whirlpool.... Noisy, energetic, fun and memorable... ( Hey i once had a girlfriend like that !!!.....) as for swooping the falls.... maybeeee...... Once... jimmytavino

don'tcha just love "youthful Enthusiasm"???? while i did my first demo, with a round, at about 80 jumps.... i was already pretty decent at getting near the pea gravel most of the time... BUT ram-airs, in tight quarters, with or without winds... are a whole different story... Cool that you have some one to look over your shoulder as you spot,,, But what If you NEED that "experience" to deal with the canopy flight,,, or the decision of when to turn from base leg to final,, or when to turn from downwind to base >>>? or how to tame down your canopy to get INTO the landing area... those experienced guys might be doing just fine themselves... But where will you be, without them over seeing the entire descent??.. probably Ok..... but is it worth the chance??? Maybe So...... maybe no..... Nice sized yard... and i see you've detailed the Optimum landing pattern,,, so you might be Ok... just don't go too far downwind.. .... and i hope that Mother nature, does Exactly as you wish.....regarding wind speed AND direction.... How far from the DZ is the site??? Don't forget your W D I ..........and pre determine the height difference of your demo terrain, as compared to the take off altitude 'above sea level'.. This factor impacts your altimeter setting and your AAD.... remember also that your AADs need to be energized at your demo site, and not your take off site,, and relatively near to the time of the demo... to account for atmospheric variations and changes...... PS.. you got an A license yet????? stay safe.

well as long as you have One Hundred THOUSAND jumps... i guess you can do whatever YOU want... how about just using the other guy's rig????? my first cutaway,,,, came at a 4 way meet where i was using two similar mains, each in their own D BAG,,, ( called it a POD, back then...) ..well the risers somehow got criss crossed,,, and so I had a chance to use my shot and a halves, and 26 foot LOPO.... not a rigger, and can't say How compatible the d bags may or may not be.... But either way.... pull the main out, and RE-Pack it... balloon jumps usually mean OFF field landings, and to cutaway Somebody Else's main is bad enough ,, to do it over territory far from the Dz,,,and with No certainty of where it might land.... Well THAT sounds like a waaay over a thousand Dollar Balloon jump..... not to mention, a new freebag and reserve re-pack... have fun be smart jmy

well, in areas that heavily populated, it would be hard to find the remote , far -away places to build reactors... But where space is more available, such plants, should be considered.. Nuclear to Electric.. to batteries,,,,makes sense to me, for vehicles... Nuclear for lighting and many other electrical needs, sure beats burning,,,, coal and oil.... as for spent nuclear materials...i recall talk of burying it in some high security, reinforced concrete and steel, billion dollar bunker, under some mountain somewhere... I would dismiss that idea, as expensive, unwanted, and not really a permanent solution... So we can't bury it, we can't sink it to the bottom of the oceans, we can't evaporate it... but can we "air freight " to a place like maybe.... the moon????? or is that silly???? How about using the space shuttle to place highly customized capsules of such matter, into space orbit???? i dunno.. i suppose we could just shoot it all out into infinity.... but that would seem like "interstellar littering" to me, and might not be well appreciated by any galactic neighbors, who may be monitoring us.... but afraid of Nuclear energy????? damn right... that fission/fusion is serious business... can it be harnessed and tapped for the benefit of the planet??? I think history has proved that it can.
