you beat me... i had 2 jumps when i started jumping my pack jobs. packed hundreds and hundreds,, hell, thousands of cheapo's and T 10's so others could make a first and sometimes ONLY jump... i liked it too. cause you always needed someone to 'hold tension',, a good way to have whuffos or newbies help out... and after the 4 line check was good, fast flaking a round, was an art... hahaha. To the O P ... nowadays everything has changed.. the ramair is a complete different packing event...but the techniques are established and with the right teacher, easily taught, and packing is fundamental to skydiving, or at least IMHO, it should be,,, Do learn it, practice it it often, get good at it, and then keep on learning OTHER things... I often thought that packing technicians are a GREAT idea, for staff rigs, and tandem rigs and AFF rigs, and most all of the gear that is part of a student program...( just from a ' tracking ' and maintance point of view, that makes sense ) but for sport gear,, gear jumped by fun jumpers and 'weekend warriors, it seems sensible that doing one's own pack job and getting comfortable with the rig, leads to good kharma between the parachute and the parachutist...!!! it builds confidence, gives us something to do between loads, saves some dough... and SPARES many MANY a packer who is simply to nice to say,, " No I can't make a 10 minute call"... self sufficiency is a good thing. jt

Growing Up as a happy little Italian BOY,, I NEVER had corned beef and cabbage, EVER... on Saint Pattys Day... but always would wear green,,,and 'celebrate' the day. One time my Aunt gave my cousin a sprig of parsley, to take to school,,,telling him that " These are Italian Shamrocks"... he gave some of them to me,,,, adn most of my irish friends LAUGHED at me... hahaha, NOW Once I married my dear wife... I became Irish through Osmosis,, and SHE introduced me to the wonder and amazement Of corned beef & cabbage.. YUMMY

flat packing can be quick, efficient, AND trouble free. only hassle is that it DOES take up more floor space than a pro-pack, and so, carry a packing mat and drag mat with you, so that you don't 'intrude' on the space of others.. i've been flat packing a PD spectre 210 for over 6 years... Never a cutaway Only thing...... tha canopy better have packing tabs on it.... ( mine does ) or else the pack job, becomes Long and tedious... I've had a few pack jobs ( ok more than a few ) done by the Pros... never a mal..... BUT more than a few openings with line twists... on Paid -for pack jobs. I no longer call it flat packing though, I call it " Pre- Pro "... jt

Was anybody skydiving DURING the shuttle launch??
jimmytavino replied to jimmytavino's topic in The Bonfire
>> IF anyone in the fine state of FLA. not only witnessed the launch...( i did enjoy the current post, about that ) but did it right along WITH a nicely timed sunset load???? Freefall anyone??? could have been a fine way to finish off any weekend.... jmy POPS 3935 M B 4370 4 stack 930 ps we had a Great sunset in these parts. 45 degrees and clear -
well they gotta be sisters, all with the same genetic blueprint for "ultra-flexible"... since you'd likely, never find 3 strangers who could do that... but what a silly song!!! jmy

exactly. j

hand cam..... for a recent AFF grad????? silly idea... you have waaaay too many OTHER , more important things to concentrate on... like proper body position, altitude awareness, location relative to "the spot" awareness, other people in the air with you awareness and of course, safely flying yourself to a landing, awareness... mix a camera into that and it can sometimes equal ONE thing.... = distraction !!! all things in good time. Certainly ask around for a capable and enthusiastic video person who can get some air to air shots, for you... they will be better, will not put you or others in jeopardy, and allow you the goal of video footage of yourself, while skydiving. have fun jmy

well then step AWAY from the Lost in Space pictures...... Noxema???? YIKES!!!!! don't you know it has that yucky aroma to it.... JUST in order to discourage such silliness... after That sorta trauma, better just hope everything still WORKS ok..... jmy

tough choice,, well penny was Danny Thomas's Kid, in Make room for Daddy. and daddy was "connected' ,, so i would not wanna piss HIM off. (though the Older daughter, WAS hot, and even did a spread in Playboy, in the 60s or 70s...) I think her name was Terry something or other... and June Lockhardt was Timmys' Mom on Lassie... waaay before the MILF concept was born, so that would be kinda creepy, and Judy mostly was Non memorable... the ROBOT was kinda Hot,, in an androgynous sort of way... And there MIGHT have been a stage there,, where Dr Zachary Smith, and even Will Robinson,,, ( Billy Mumy) had some sort of REALLY weird appeal,,,,, which i didn't quite understand... BUt i got past THAT phase pretty easily...once the girls started talking to me in school... but all in all I'd have to go with that Ultra Hottie,,,, Shirley Feeney.. what a doll!!!! she had it ALL over Laverne... PS.. that joanie cunningham ( sister of "Opie" Cunningham) grew up nicely too didn't she???...though from what i've read and seen about her "escapades" backstage,,,i'm glad i never gave my HEART to her...she wouldda broke it. hahahahahaha jimmy

Twardo.... your post included the words "B 4 " . . . . BINGO !!!!!.... hahahah seriously though,,, to madprops.. you're just yanking our collective chain?? aren't you?? here's the deal... THIS sport/lifestyle is NOT a 100 yard dash... It's a damn Marathon!!! it takes years and years,,,, NOT 10 or 20 or 100 or 500 jumps..... It takes a mental commitment to the respect needed, for any ONE of these disciplines... and you boast that you're gonna do EVERYthing and do it NOW... welll friend... remember what happened to Veruca Salt while at Willie Wonka's " d z " ...???? what did she stamp HER feet about ? and what did SHE want....??? "all of it".. "don't care HOW!!!! I want it Now " !!! and she wound up being identified as a "bad egg" and earned a trip to the incinerator!!!!! hahahahaha now I'm jerking YOUR chain,,( a little,, but also I'm damn serious ) Please DO be careful.. hell we don't want you to MISS out on the subtle and the important little details and nuances , which make skydiving and parachuting so appealing......... while you're busy flying by them, on your way to aerial HEROISM!!!! "safety first and what the Hell, safety second too!!!"

I understand a little better, now..it sure does seem like a tough tough situation.. and true enough.. some people just don't get it...sounds like your housemate is simply , one of those types.. good luck. keep studying... jt

3 years for throwing a shoe - that's fucking stupid
jimmytavino replied to shropshire's topic in Speakers Corner
Then you have some of the people who were released from Guantanamo re-appearing as a senior leader of the Taliban or operative of Al Qaida. yes that was my point Billy,, well said... think those people are pissed off.... I DO.... we reap what we sow... jt -
3 years for throwing a shoe - that's fucking stupid
jimmytavino replied to shropshire's topic in Speakers Corner
not as stupid as throwing people into a Guantanamo ( sp) prison camp for 5 or 6 years. simply because they fit some sort of 'profile' for being a " terra-ist " ... gotta give the shoe thrower, something for the assault... but they should take off, 2 years,, from the sentence, for the entertainment value ,,, of the incident.. jmt -
I hate to say it Dear,,, But you ARE being unreasonable.... the theme of this post reminded me of the thread you began a while ago,,, in which you BLASted a housemate....over similar "inconsiderite" issues... Me thinks, YOU need to live alone.. .. sharing a house or an apartment is NOT easy... and there are TWO sides to every story... YES you should be able to study and read and do as you please, while at Home,,, But you should Not be able to dictate what other housemates do while they are in Their home.. problem arises when One Place is HOME to many people,, especially people with different schedules , agendas...and personalities I'm sure the finances of the time, and other considerations, may force one to be in a house sharing situation...which is tough... BUt if that's the case... I'd recommend finding friends to become housemates, instead of finding strangers, whom you "hope" can be friendly.. otherwise it is "every man for himself",, since no ONE persons situation is More important than anothers... Good idea to find another place where you can silently read or study.. But everyone elses' life should not have to screech to a halt,, because of your current circumstance..Any chance that one of the housemates would consider swapping rooms with you, to alow you to have a more remote, or less centrally located room??? Is there any basement or attic space?? that you can convert to a study area??? Compromise isn't easy, but it IS a first step toward change,, and sure beats the hell out of moaning about a situation which you have had a hand in creating,,,( based on your need for solitude) sorry for the bad news.. good luck on your exams.. .... edited to ammend.... IF this is YOUR house,, and YOU have arranged the details by which 'tenants' also occupy the place,, then,, there is some argument that you MAY set and enforce some guidelines, IF those details are explained, at the Outset.... But if you are a tenant yourself, as are the others,, then the fewer "rules" the better,,, talk it out, and try to work out an arrangement, whereby everyones concerns and needs are equally addressed... and " talk it out" doesn't mean.. you establish a bunch of arbitrary rules... peace jimmy in rochester...

Need help on Home depot Demo!!
jimmytavino replied to recovercrachead's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
i applaud you on your enthusiasm and recognition for safety... ...sooo you have an FFA waiver... but do not YET have the OK from the "powers that be", right within the Home Depot organization, Itself???...... You very well may have the know how to accomplish the jump, and a suitable canopy for such things... so when you meet with the decision makers,, bring along your logbooks... locate pages in there,, WITH the evidence of such demo jumps.. Point out the seriousness with which most skydivers would approach such a 'show'. and re-assure them that their Customer base would likely ENJOY such a treat.... -
i was gonna vote option 3.. but that could be construed as a P A ... and so i wouldn't EVER go there. so i vote NO.... especially since you mention "well armed".. THAT aspect alone, puts you into a deeper category of TROUBLE,, and God forbid,, if something stupid happened,,, Then you wind up in some FEDeral.. penitentiary and your New Rush... will be simply " stayin' alive"... Now a well thought out Armored car takedown.... THAT could be fun... as mentioned earlier in this thread.. Why rob a bank "over the counter",, when all you need to do, Is put on a 3 piece Suit, apply and secure a JOB there,,, and then just wait for the annual Upper management, scraping of the cream,,,,, off the top of the books.... as OUR money,, becomes Their Money... THEN,, just apply for a govt. bail out... Mo' Money Mo' Money Mo' Money !!!!!!! jmy

what was the worst canopy youve ever jumped?
jimmytavino replied to caspar's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
first time i ever jumped a 5 cell ram air, and it was the LAST time too.. Strato-Star... it was twitchy and small and i just didn't like it. landed it hard. but IN the pea gravel... have NEVER since,,,, jumped a main, smaller than a heavy weight cloud,, I've been OVER 200 Square feet, for my main, since the 80's. when i had an RW Challenger 240 that gave me 11 or 12 hundred trouble free deployments... retired it with Zero mals.... had a 175 sq ft reserve for a while, but never needed to deploy it... been using a 225 reserve for years now. 2 good landings with it. 210 main. upsize ??? downsize?? i just stick with the RIGHT size>>>. jmy -
well for a few $$$ each,, why not have the plumber install a pair of shut-offs NOW...? can't hurt... can you get BEHIND the wall where the shower valve is located?? inside a closet?? maybe?? can you consider CREATING an access panel on the wall behind the tub area??? cut out the wallboard, a sizeable and workable opening, and then cover the area, afterwards, with a panel, or even a kitchen cabinet door. sized to fit... are you working with Copper supplies??? or PVC supplies??? one key to any successful do-it-yourself home plumbing job ,, is a GOOD and HOT torch,,, whenever you are sweating copper... Mapp gas, beats the hell out of propane, and a pipe which is completely empty of water,,,, ( OPEN all the sink faucets,, downhill, from the problem area,,,) is essential...Clean and FLUX both sides of a fitting or pipe ,,and only when the area is HOT hot.... touch off the solder to it. If it's right, the solder will flow neat and quick. all the way around the spot...

sure thing.. coffee. EVERY morning... home made, and on the strong side... equal or sweet & low, and some milk.. and I'm a happy guy..... I DO like the idea which skymama mentions, for that added treat... i almost NEVER buy coffee at a starbucks, or a dunkin'donuts, or a fast food place...etc.... they never seem to taste very good... ONE exception..... Janines @ Z hills....

the sony dsc V 1 can be operated with a hard wired, hand held pendant which is multi purpose. it can turn the camera on and off, and has an amber indicator light, which TELLS you the camera is On.... it has a shutter activation button and a zoom "slide control"...but it is hand held...and hand activated,, ( i added a plastic molex coupling, into the approx. 5 ' long cable, and kept most of it in my jumpsuit sleeve, and the "plug into the camera " portion of it with the helmet..the pendant has a strong clip incorporated into it, which attaches nicely to the tube stow of my left hand mounted wrist altimeter...I can fully open my palm and Not 'lose the switch' and then simply close my hand around it and "find" the shutter button.. I did super glue a plastic button onto the shutter switch, so that it protrudes up enough to easily feel it... But maybe better yet,, check with Laszlo about a small compact, Kodak V705. It has a built in wide angle, and he has adapted them to accept a standard tongue, or bite switch. the Sony V1 has been around since '03, but it has great features and takes nice pics....though technically i think it IS discontinued... attached are pics of the camera the pendant and the wide angle lens and 3 samples of the pcitures it takes... Be sure to check at laszloimage.com....for information about the kodak model. very small,, very lightweight, but nice photos, for tandem or close-in images...His contact information ( as well as TONS of great photos, can be found at his website. good luck jmy

true event... the dz's Cessna 180 had to go to someplace near denver for either an engine rebuild or a new propeller, or something...1975, maybe 1976... and the college kid, (with already a commercial ticket to his credit ) who flew the plane the most... agreed to take a commercial flight out there,, to retrieve the jumpship when it was ready... All went well and on schedule and when he arrived @ the Dz on a friday evening, there was a happy crowd, on hand to meet him,,,, Not because we liked him,,,, though we DID
