  1. never have used a camera box. often ran two videos side by side attached with the 1/4 -20 screw, through a base plate...but always used a secondary connection, opting for lightweight bungees, years ago and now a 1" wide webbing strap with plastic quick clip. i've had a BatRak for about 5 or 6 years and very much LIKE having everything top mounted, save for a small SONY digi-still which connects to a plate extension and rides up front. (when... i choose to use it ).. i went to the Q releases when i started using the batrak... I do use fairly heavy manfrotto Q R's. but like the convenience they provide, as well as the solid connection. I use a Nikon d70S and an HC-3.. they fit together pretty well. outside the box is good, and you're wise to brainstorm such ideas, since sometimes they can get waaaay outside.... My dilemma right now, is just WHERE to attach my SB -800 speedlight... .. but that is a matter for another thread jmy

    Mel Blanc

Fantastic list of cartoon characters, most of them near and dear.. He gave them each a voice and a personality.. Just loved those 10 minute clips.... and later on, as they ( the animators the writers the techs, and Mr Blanc, himself ) perfected their work... we, as children of the 50's and 60's and 70's had many a fine saturday morning laughing in the TV room, relishing in childhood.!! ..and then we followed Merry Melodies, with SKY KING !!!!..... and a peanut butter sandwich. what a country...!!!! thanks for the nostalgia jmy
  3. Never tell 'em EVERYthing.... just tell 'em enough. leave a little something for later... that helps keep things interesting right??? jmy

    Tax Time!

right. in our case, it's best to have a good C P A , and my guy is Great. located not far from our home. runs a great ( legitimate) home office from his house,,, works 10 and 12 hour days. from Dec to May, and is very organized... Uses verified Up to date software, does it all with State of the art computers and fast fast fast printers. can spit out a 30 page return in about 3 minutes.... ( though the last few years now, it's done electronically) I sign a form associated with the elec. return, and it gets sent in... He does our fed 1040 and the NY STate return, and he and I complete the Quarterly returns, together, as the year flies by. He now even takes care of our adult Children's returns...
  5. 400 dollars??? hell... that's Not much at all... i've been paying Taxes, since i'm 16 years old... withholding taxes, ( paid by my employer(s) ) sales taxes Insurance bills,,, which are Nothing BUt additional "you better be careful" Tax. and then of course property taxes.... which are the only thing in this economy which is going UP... social security tax... so that anyone who has a TV and sees the Lawyer commercials about how to qualify for "disability" , can make MY money, Their money... and since being both the employer and the employee for over 25 years.. i get to also pay DUPLICATE social security tax... reminds me of the "Popeye" movie with Robin Williams, where the tax man is trying to collect a "docking tax" a 'visitors tax' a 'walking around tax" and of course a " TAX Tax....." Man.. I'd take 400 bucks for my tax bill ANY day... ( better start writing off your skydiving expenses) jmy
  6. let's not forget those children who are being raised NOT by one parent, but by NEITHER parent.... children born to non marrieds, often where the mother is between 15 and 18 years of age.... the 'sperm donor" is no where to be found the 'mother' is overwhelmed, and so it falls to the Mother of the Mother, i e the Grandma,,, to raise and deal with, these kids.. Grandma takes on the job,, because "who could deny the innocence, the joy, the wonder, of a tiny baby??/ sad thing is,,, after having raised her own kids, and sometimes doing a miserable job of THAT,,,, ( as evidenced by the sudden pregnancy) , the woman is now dealing with raising often,,, more than just One grandchild... The older woman, also becomes overwhelmed, leaving the kids to 'raise themselves'.. which IMHO is a certain recipe for trouble... For sure there may be exceptions,,, but in many many cases, the children run wild, ( while at the same time professing Undying LOVE for the grandma, who then has the wool pulled over her eyes ) as junior runs the streets, skips school, lies and steals, and eventually steps across the line, into criminal activity... real sad... happens in cities, happens in rural areas, happens in MORE places than the "establishment" is willing to realize... MORE children is NOT now, the solution, and never was, and never will be... More responsibilty might help,,, on the part of the youth of our country,,,But the responsibility "learning curve" is a tough one which many never manage to understand. jmy
  7. saw it today..... very Intense film... interesting camera angles and cameras in motion... interesting characters AND character development.. learned that i would NEVER want to live in Bombay ( Mumbai ),,,,, seems to be a tough tough city... just the title alone,,,, caught my attention.... good luck to the production crew, as the Oscars are awarded... "jimmy thousandaire"
  8. exactly..... by 'front of the skyvan'.. do you mean UP near the pilots, or "at the front of the group to exit"... i. e. near the exit area of the tailgate...? different location could mean a different reaction by those around you... It is best, to scan with our eyes. bring attention to the jumper, with our voice, ( calmly), and ONLY issue assistance with our HAND(s),, if asked, by that jumper... it IS good to look at the gear of others in the plane, or better yet, when at Pre-board".. if a mistake needs to be noticed... but the active fixing of others gear, especially when it isn't needed ,requires a lot more than just THINKING something is amiss, especially when time is not a constraint. lets keep the 'freaking out' on one another, to a minimum, both in the plane and on the ground
  9. does this school offer any sort of activities, lectures? films or movies? sporting events? if so find out about them, and PLAN to attend a few... try to maintain good nutrition, AND you need to get some active excersize, every day... Seasonal Affective Disorder can get the best of any 'happy and fulfilled" person. the long nights, lack of daily sunshine, and cold temps will conspire to rob of us enthusiasm and even energy. You're not alone... but recognizing the situation, is a good first step towards limiting it's impact on you... Is this your FIRST winter at this school??? are you FROM New hamp. or from another state with less harsh winters??... if all else fails, plan your spring break for ANY place that has sunshine and big airplanes... IMHO jimmy in rochester NY ( where the temp is currently 4 degrees AND the wind is blowing....) good luck.
  10. very creative! what else ya' got????? jmy
  11. hmmm sounds like a dropzone and a dzo who has a need for tandem video people,,,, yet few to choose from... (a free fly guy who happens to have a camera, and a willing intermediate level skydiver,,, you!!!) let me guess.. 1. you're at a cessna DZ??? 2. they do lots of tandems 3. many many tandem students just HAVE to have a video 4. the TM's don't wanna do hand-cam 5. you're young and enthusiastic fact is. there are certain "recommendations" which are made with the welfare of all, taken into account.... you may or may not choose to follow them... choose carefully though,,,, i think you've already chosen,, so others may not be effective in influencing you... soooo depending on your size and shape, a camera jacket could work, or else a camera suit with wings could work... OF Course!!! since you already ARE a camera person you must Know ,,,,, that there are different SIZES of wings... but we don't wanna confuse things too much .. do we?? ... as to the reply by rhys........ *** "cough cough Bullshit cough cough..." BAD move to claim BS against the post made by laszlo.... perhaps you ( mistakenly) believe that he is not qualified to offer advice... THAT would be waaay wrong, pal... way wrong... of course judging by your profile,,, anyone who has made 4600 jumps in 6 years !!! must Know everything..... and perhaps you do... but by the tone of your post... it seems that you think that anyone can be a prodigy..... rpolis simply does not yet Know enough, to realize what he doesn't know... ( no offense intended rpolis) rhys's casual 'anyone can do anything ' attitude is a dangerous one, IMHO jmy
  12. first met MR Truffer @ the Collegiate Nationals in De Land Fla. Nov. 1974... ( we were both, just kids ) He was the type of person who was easy to remember, cause he is REAL. Years could go by , yet whenever i might write to the publication, or call with a question, that same real and genuine concern and interest in me, by Him, or by Sue Clifton, was always evident.. Just Love that magazine, and when they switched to glossy paper,,,, WOW the pics just jumped out at the reader... very very sad to now hear this news... Thanks Mike and company, for allll the decades of information, editorials, humor, and advertising.... well done. best wishes in any and all of your future endeavors...
  13. be consistant be honest be considerite Make NO appointmnet, promise, or claim that you Can't keep... If you are bad at remembering such things, then write them down... Never try to prove your business acumen, with words..... prove it with actions, professional service, and behavior. Look a person square in the eyes when you meet and shake their hand. Smile, and speak to them BY NAME... Use statements of fact,,, to point out how the customer will BENEFIT... by your product, or services, then deliver whatever you have offered. the most useful tool i have in my truck, is the cell phone. I will call, well ahead of time , if i cannot keep a pre-made appointment. better yet. try to stay away from hard and fast appointment time frames. rather ask the client, what day of the week or time of the day works best for THEM.. make a note of it, and then call during those time frames,, to ask, "Can i meet with you, say, in the next half hour or so,,,"? another good tip for business success??? NEVER use income, deposit, or down payment from ONE job,,, to pay the Bills against ANother job... If you screwed up the pricing, then do NOT take a paycheck from that job, unless and until ALL the expenses against that job, have been paid..... it's a bad practice to think that YOUR paycheck,,, supercedes paying the other bills first... experience, a reasonable amount of smarts, and working hard WILL generally result in there being enough $$$$ left over , to cover your salary... return calls, price your services and products the SAME,,,, to everyone. Never push your prices for one area, or one customer, due to a perceived abilty to pay, or not to pay. It's far easier to remember ONE set of numbers, as compared to trying to remember WHO you told WHAT... ... as to the unscrupulous rip off artists or those who charge outrageous fees.... sooner or later the customer base will abandon them, and continue to look around , until they find something better,,,, THEN they will tell others about it. signed, something better... jmy
  14. we often only think of employment statistics, as they apply to UN employment.. these numbers are interesting, since they refer to employment growth... something i never much thought about... The Democrats seem to fare much better than the Rebublicans, only Nixon did even close, and he was coming off the relative boom from the JFK LBJ administrations,, and the decent economy of the 60's,,, but the rest did pitifully.. can you rearrange the list, chronologically?, rather than from best to worst...? that view would be very telling... jimmytavino
  15. quite the interesting and telling, attachment... i learned LONG ago ( when i was a teen ) to remove a glove from my hand, before I offered it in a handshake.... isn't that a sign of respect,,?? or at least, manners...hell it wasn't THAT cold... kinda sad, and pathetic... and with the former vp lurking there,,,, black band, around his black hat.. like it was a funeral, and not the rebirth and Catharsis,, which any sane person should be yearning for...and for which this country, indeed the entire planet, is desperate ...
  16. tbrown many thanks for a thread, "which will live in infamy' the countdown has been long and tough,,, and things have gotten worse, not better, as the countdown has progressed...( except for the recent election day mandate for change) so we are all mostly GLAD to reach the ZERO number.... Be GONE..... W. and never darken our collective doorstep again... fade away... you will not be missed... ( expect by Leno, Letterman, Conan obrien, JibJab, et al.) Now let's start a count UP... as this country tries to recover... it is my fervent HOPE that in 600 days from today..... we can awake to a USA which has improved it's standing in the eyes of the world, improved its economy, healthcare, and educational systems and has moved toward the coveted aspirations of the forefathers from 230 years ago... the man has done lots of damage and was a poor "deciderer" the Bush/Cheney fiasco , ends today... IMHO the next "course" should be as defendants in the world court, and not some golf "course" in texas... but sadly i think, that will never happen... i can exist quite happily if i never hear of that man, again... Yale should be ashamed... jt
  17. yes yes... wow bruno L... one of the REAL good guys... he's a first captain now for the airlines,,, been at THAT for close to 20 years.. flies Airbus 320s' as i understand... very likely that same LOPO i bet... and HW is sharp as ever.. Tibor's WAS in west bloomfield..... last name, actually ORSZAGH... last we heard he was in OHIO workin' as some sort of inspector for an airline. he was a FINE DZO and a nice guy... as to THAT 28 footer.... it met a sad fate , on a water jump into Lake Ontario in the mid to late 70's. the jumper who was using it, exited the harness OK upon touchdown in the Lake, but lost her hold of the entire set of gear, and the H/C, that main, and a brand new, "jerry Bird" flat pack chest mount reserve, sunk out of her hands, and went to the bottom of the lake,,,, we trolled for it many many times, dragging a grappling hook, but sadly never snagged it,, so there it lies , thirty years later..... IF only I could afford to Hire the JASON crew or else get some treasure hunter like Mel Fisher interested in it,,,i'd go after it...
  18. in a world which seems to emphasize instant gratification....... it's great to see your perseverance to reach the 100 jump accomplishment... delayed gratification is often so much sweeter... skydive safely, skydive often , skydive with friends

  21. i never "Undo" my legstraps just loosen them all the way...when taking off my rig... To don my rig, i always... open the reserve flap, check that the cypres is on...and reserve pin is seated, and the rigger thread is undamaged.. close the flap. open the main pin flap. check for 'blue in the window" of the bridle and check that the main pin is well seated, and the closing loop is NOT worn... THEN.... Step into the right side legstrap loop, leaving it loose for the moment. stick my right arm into the harness and hoist the rig onto my back... let the container slide as low as possible while bending my left leg back, and sticking my left foot into the left side legstrap loop and then hoisting the whole rig back Up onto my shoulders,,,then shoot the left arm into the harness under the left side main lift web and hoist the whole thing well solid ,,, onto my back... at that point I thread and secure the cheststrap and then bend over and tighten BOTH legstraps.... to the Max... ...clear my wing clips and clip each side. don my wrist altimeter ( left hand) and lastly place my swoop cord loops OVER the alti, and over the back of my right hand... same deal EVERY time... check 3 connection points and PC handle before boarding ( to be sure that it's THERE,, and that the PC material is well stowed away in the spandex BOC) Check everything again prior to exit.. ASK for a main only,,,, pin check, IF i've been seated in any way which had the main container rubbing against a seat or the aircraft walls or bulkheads... seems to work, for me... jt
  22. that clip with the 'daisy dukes' must be what they mean when they say Sabado GiGANTE!!! (not that there's ANYthing wrong!! with that.) i've noticed those channels, since i first got cable... Don FransisCOOOO..... and some lady named ChristiNAAA..... and the tv station ARMONDOTE.... no idea... what ANY of it means... OH the spanish soap operas seem to be waaaay more Caliente!!! than the english ones... must be that Latin Passion!!! jt
  23. should read....US Airways plane makes an Emergency Landing in the Hudson River.... the word crash is inappropriate to use here.... to my way of thinking , a crash is when things get smashed, parts get bent, people get hurt,,, or WORSE... The pilots here, are for sure, heroes... and showed great heads up common sense and POISE..... Kudos to the aircraft and its manufacturers, as well..... so pleased to hear that all were able to get away safely... ,, a fantastic conclusion to a serious, scarey and life threatening situation. jmy
  24. class A Lic. for a class A person. good job jimmy A 3914 D 12122
