Army sergeant refuses third Iraq tour
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in Speakers Corner
Creative? Do you provide jobs or schooling? There is a difference. Or any job that requires a clearance or background check. That includes banking, and any SIDA jobs. I've done recruitment for private accredited institutions over the years as well as pure IT recruitment. Some of my current clients include most of the major global banks, financial institutions, etc. If a company has been burned in the past via resume lies they will do the full background check. Most just keep your release on file and never use it unless a reason surfaces. It all depends on the HR SOPs. Even if they do, typical 'fears' relating to credit checks and discharges do not always equate to a denial of hire. Know why a recruiter asks for references and background checks? So they can get more names of people to call - who you know is my next phone call for creating business. I will admit that jobs that require clearance would be a major issue if you had a negative discharge from service. But most of those jobs are Gov't jobs anyhow. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again..... -
Army sergeant refuses third Iraq tour

Manage what you have first as if you have no surplus. I don't think this was ever done - Bush went in there thinking we would be done and over with quickly. We've talked plenty on that. I'm glad that Gates is voicing what the Generals have said, but adding more of our troops to the death total can't be the only option we have left at this point. It's possible that we are at that point thou because Bush pretended to know better than everyone else and never listened. He has run the military and this war just like he ran his companies: into the ground. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Army sergeant refuses third Iraq tour

Several. Got some into college via other creative methods once their loans were denied. There have been more dishonorable discharge coming across my desk since this war started than I know what to do with. The only people that care about the status of your discharge are those that are still in the military or those that hire former military types....and government jobs. The majority of the civilian world just doesn't care about it. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Throwing more wood on a fire isn't how you put it out. Find a way to manage this war better. Find a way to stop the mounting daily death toll of our current soldiers. Easier said than done, but I'm sure the administration will get it right no matter how many they kill while changing tactics. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Army sergeant refuses third Iraq tour
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in Speakers Corner
I know the fine print says he could be called back within 8 years, but this man more than served his country and earned his army benefits. It's terrible that the mismanagement of this war has become his problem yet again. I will say that in my 6+ years of recuitment and sales that no one has ever asked about discharge status in relationship to a job. It has come up on federal loan applications for education, but nothing in the employment realm. I pulled out the application forms to 7 companies this morning and looked at the military section and they only asked time served, branch, specialization, final rank and awards/commendations received. I don't think he would ever have a problem getting a job.....I think that is mostly bark and very little bite. The only thing that may work against him is that his story as front page news in Chicago. But bottom line there is that in the civilian world most just don't care about gov't red tape like that. Third time's the harm (http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/189171,CST-NWS-SOLDIER28.article) December 28, 2006 BY DAVE NEWBART Staff Reporter Steven Henderson served his country during two tours of duty as an Army sergeant in Afghanistan -- repeatedly coming under enemy fire and seeing fellow soldiers maimed and U.S. helicopters gunned down. The Chicago native is back home now after being honorably discharged 20 months ago. He's married and working toward a college degree -- but the Army has called upon him again. A letter he received two weeks before Christmas orders him to report to Fort Benning, Ga., by Jan. 14. Under the order, he is required to fight in Iraq for a period "not to exceed 545 days." But this time, Henderson says he will not serve his country. "It would take a miracle for me to put on a uniform again and to carry a weapon in Iraq,'' he said. "I have no intentions of going to Iraq.'' Henderson, 34, mailed off an appeal to the military Wednesday in hopes he can get out of the obligation. He already completed four years of active duty, including 17 months in operations all over Afghanistan. He received several commendations and even appears in Not a Good Day to Die, a book about Operation Anaconda, a U.S.-led assault in eastern Afghanistan in 2002. The book recounts an operation where Henderson and another soldier survived heavy enemy fire. "That was the longest 18 hours of my life,'' he recalled. Henderson married a woman from Ecuador, and she is awaiting a visa to come to the United States with a child from a previous relationship. He's also currently studying business at Northern Illinois University and hopes to eventually go to law school. "I find it appalling that two days prior to my final exams, two years after any formal training, and with two tours of combat duty served, the U.S. military would even consider reactivating myself or any soldier,'' he said. "To ask that of any veteran is crazy." Could lose benefits But it's allowed under the contract all enlistees sign. Soldiers can be called into active duty anytime within eight years of signing up, said Bryan Hilferty, an Army personnel spokesman at the Pentagon. Since the involuntary mobilizations started in the summer of 2004, about 11,000 soldiers have been called back into duty, more than in any previous war, Hilferty said. But 4,600 have been granted delays or hardship exemptions, and only 6,000 have been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. Hilferty said only 200 veterans haven't reported. Although penalties can include jail time, typically soldiers lose their honorable discharge status, which could threaten their Army benefits and have implications for future employment. At her Olympia Fields home Wednesday, Henderson's mother, Kathleen White, teared up when thinking that her only son could end up back in harm's way. His stepfather, Herbert White, who relies on his stepson for help around the house as he awaits a liver transplant, said he was worried about his son going abroad for potentially the third time. "How many chances does he have before something really bad happens? I'm afraid this will be the third strike. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again..... -
I'm going to be a PITA here - but that has been the case for every child ever born so far. By choosing your partner you are already preventing your offspring from having certain genetic traits by not choosing someone else to couple with. You are designing your child by choosing who you mate with. Do you think then, we should prevent deaf couples or short-people from mating because there is a strong likelyhood that the kid will end up with the same un-normal life? The only thing the medical research is going to do is give them a larger likelyhood to secure this. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... There are two sides to this : 1) The baby didn't ask to be born and therefore deserves a normal life, not one based on a soapbox. 2) Who are you to say what normal is? Just because you feel that being short or lack hearing gimps you in the modern world doesn't mean that is the truth. This isn't about your comfort level, it's about theirs. I don't have kids, nor do I want them but I would have figured a subculture that thrives on being the opposite of normal would have no issues with others wanting to be different in their own way. I must admit that my first reaction to this idea wasn't positive when it came up a few years ago when I was introduced to a few deaf couples. The topic came up on how most didn't want to have a talkie child, that we couldn't understand the beauty they find in silence and the bonds it creates.....but that isn't giving the entire conversation justice as the topic went on over a few dinners during the course of a few weeks. I came out of those discussions thinking that their child, if deaf, would be loved/cared for and thus better off than many other children in this world that can hear. I take a 'hands-off' stance on this topic as I do when it comes to most that want to partner up (same sex, so called handicaped people, etc) for life and raise a family. As long as they are happy and don't abuse the children I'm ok with it. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Three cases of beer with about 4 inches of dust on them....left over from my friends bachelor party. Sad to say the beer lasted longer than the marriage. Also goes to show just how much I don't drink these days :p edit: now that I think about it, all the booze in my house is left over from parties I have. I have a few bottles of to-kill-ya, whiskey (the gooooood stuff), everclear, etc. Just never motivated to drink it. I will pick up a case of Pilsner Urguel every other month and drink one during a sports game. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I don't know how good the completion of this story could be...she has built up to this final confrontation for a decade! What can we do about Skyride?
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I was a very active skydiver when I posted this and I was tired of the complaints and various unorganized threads behind this. My attempt was to try to bring some focus to the topic.....I had no idea the thread would grow to this size. I believe that due to the hard work of alot of people that real information about this company has surfaced. There are a few places you can go to get educated about it now. There has also been alot of quiet work happening out of the public eye by some key people on the legal side of this as well. All I did was make a post, but the community made their own choice of what needed to be done. When I finally come back to the sport hopefully this will be resolved by then. As far as what you can do: keep the high road, don't google bomb, don't do anything illegal or unethical to this company or anyone associated with it. You will end up causing more damage in the long run to all the hard work that people have put into the good fight. If you disagree with what Skyride does, educate others and don't associate yourself with this business. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... About 5 inches near me but I benefit from extra trucks around the airport to keep traffic going (except for those times a jet chooses to park on Central Ave). The only real issue with today was the subway setting on fire or some crap and all the trains being full. Woke up 15 min early and was only 2 min late for work (and the first one in), But alas, the snow has stopped and it's already melting. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... uh huh....my brother called me from Florida this morning. Apparently everyone at his job is complaining about how cold it is there today anyhow, just saw two huge snow bombs fall off the building...these things would have taken out a car if the light hadn't been red _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... It was 65F here the last few days....just makes waking up to a very cold floor this morning more painful. Waking up to snow on Dec 1 doesn't really bug me....and the streets will be cleared by the time I wake up. Thankfully I take the train to work every day and won't have to worry about cleaning off the car. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Everything looks like shit when you've played 1200 x 1600 resolutions on full detail at 100 frames per second... I like PC's. PC's only for gaming. Breathed on, with loads and loads or RAM, and dual core processing, and an overclocked GPU. t Gonna agree with you on this. A console game just can't match the likes of World of Warcraft, F.E.A.R, Hitman, Thief, Command and Conquer (Red Alert), Far Cry, Half Life, etc. I love the concept of some games like Undead Rising and Gears of War - however playing a FPS with a console controler just doesn't feel like I have control of the game after using a mouse. Now there are a few exceptions to that: Guitar Hero 2 and Final Fantasy 12.....I dusted off the 360 and the PS2 for those. I don't think the PS3 will suck. However, it will be a while before there are any good games for it. Sony makes very complicated systems that are not easy to make games for (notice that the best games for the PS1 and PS2 were coming out just before they depricated). Since the SDKs didn't go out till last year you won't see much depth to any of the Launch Games. The Wii will be a different story. Nintendo develops their systems with game programming in mind....and those game devs are invovled from the start. The new Zelda game has been under work for years and it looks like it. From the start Nintendo in-house games will be some of the best console games out there. Plus you can play/download any legacy Nintendo game. Then there is the unique controler that I hated at first but now see the genius in it. If I had a choice of a PS3/Wii.....I would take the Wii. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

I'm happy that there is going to be change but I am no where close to dancing in the streets since I could care less which party is going to bring it. However I am just as worried about where we will be in four years with this crew as I was in the last two elections with the GOP taking everything. These are still politicians who, for the most part, cannot be trusted to represent without corruption. I believe this country is worse off now than it was over the last six years. We have so much ground to make up, so much to repair while also trying to focus on what was broken before that was ignored or made worse by this administration. Then there is the very real threat to our country as well. I hope they can handle the job. My confidence is low until I see them in action. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

SBC (Now AT&T), decent tech support and about $50/month for phone/internet. I get the lowest end phone with nothing on it but caller ID since I only use my cell phone. Most DSLs in the area are all run on the SBC network under a lease. I would say uptime is around 98%. What recently surprised me is after the recent damage from the storm that flooded us is how quick they came out and fixed my problems. I had my phone back up within 4 hours after I submitted my ticket and had my DSL working within 12 hours after that. Just to compare it took me two weeks to get my furnace and water heaters working again. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... That works until they change the SSID and add a PSK along with MAC filtering. Not impossible to get past, but also not worth the trouble. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Sorry to say that Comcast is the only real option as RCN has never been all that reliable.....not that Comcast is that great. Cost is high for both, customer service is among some of the worst I have ever seen from a company. I'm using DSL and I am currently stuck with 1.5 speed because I refuse to go to Comcast and they won't upgrade the CO in my area. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Durbin's email to me/Social Security
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in Speakers Corner
Apparently someone reads the emails that get sent to our Senators. This was in my inbox this morning, looks like they put you specific mailing lists depending on what your letter to them is about. Since you have contacted me in the past regarding your concerns about the Administration's efforts to privatize Social Security, I wanted to update you on the status of this issue as the 109th Congress draws to a close. We succeeded in preventing the Majority from bringing the President's Social Security privatization plan to the floor of the Senate during the 109th Congress. The sustained opposition to the President's proposal, in Congress and across the nation, convinced Senate leaders to delay consideration of this risky plan. I helped lead the fight against this misguided proposal, which would make Social Security much less stable. In February of this year, however, when the President submitted his annual federal budget proposal to Congress, many observers were surprised to discover that the President had quietly included his Social Security privatization plan in his budget. The plan would create private accounts at the cost of $700 billion in Social Security revenues. This plan was included in the President's budget proposal despite continuing strong public disapproval of privatization. The President's budget proposal is only a recommendation to Congress, but it revealed that the President is still more interested in advancing his privatization plan than working with Congress to address the long term solvency of Social Security in a bipartisan fashion. When we begin the 110th Congress in January, I hope the President will finally abandon privatization and work with the House and Senate to enact legislation in a bipartisan manner that extends Social Security's solvency and strengthens the program for the long term. Any reform proposal must ensure that Social Security is preserved for future retirees, disabled workers, and the families of workers who die young. If the President continues to advocate privatization, I will continue to oppose it. Sincerely, Richard J. Durbin United States Senator RJD/ls P.S. If you are ever visiting Washington, please feel free to join Senator Obama and me at our weekly constituent coffee. When the Senate is in session, we provide coffee and donuts every Thursday at 8:30 a.m. as we hear what is on the minds of Illinoisans and respond to your questions. We would welcome your participation. Please call my D.C. office for more details. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again..... -
Globalization Decimating US I.T. Jobs: "The New Face of Class War"
