  1. I want to ask everyone who disagreed with Jeffrey (those who think this isn't asinine) just one thing: When will it be a crime to write similar literature about waspy christian fundamentalists 'infiltrating' the US and its government? denouncing prayer in the workplace? Or is it ok to write that because it's about white christians? edit to clarify witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  2. No one is saying that dragging a man to his death is the same as shotting someone incident to another crime. Everyone realizes there are variables when someone is killed. That's why most states have eight or more crimes covering homicide. What I want to know is why you think dragging a man to his death becasue of race is worse than dragging a man to his death for any other reason. Are you saying the US is perfect in its history on civil rights? Were there no klan riders? Was "nigger" never spray painted on buildings? Were crosses never burned? Were Japanese never rounded into concentration camps? You think we never had a kristalnacht? Maybe you ought to read up on US history. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  3. Reminds me of the joke about British officers' red coats and the French officers' brown pants. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  4. When I was there in January it was still the british pound. In Scotland it was the pound, but apparently the banks there are allowed to print their own bills (as opposed to England, where I think it's uniform and centrally done). The one thing that sucks is having to exchange currency again. Other than that, I respect them holding on to their currency, and hope it stays. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

  6. So why then do some people want to trust healthcare to the government, when they can't even handle their own travel arrangements? Why would anyone want to put more power/money/decisions in the hands of people who are not hurt if they are wrong? (somebody has a sigline referencing that) witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  7. The prospects are basically nil for passing the bill into law. There are several senators that could vote either way, taking the Senate with them to pass it or not, but there are not enough senators to stop a filibuster (which would surely ensue), and there is certainly not enough votes to pass it in the House. It's not going to happen, but that doesn't mean those fucknuts are going to stop trying. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  8. Did you truly not realize I was talking about one side of this debate versus the other side? I put that sentence directly below the quote for a reason. The vast majority of Americans believe in the right to own firearms, and were they told the truth about the AWB, I'm sure even more people would writing their senators asking "WTF." (when Democrats from Georgia are more conservative than Republicans from New Jersey, don't you think I know party lines only go so far?) witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  9. So is a 'dirty bomb,' but that doesn't make it any less scary. My point anyone really interested in it already knows how to make a low rent nuke. The kid didn't even mean to and he probably sterilized half his block. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  10. Sen Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and 11 co-sponsors (the usual suspects) have introduced legislation (S. 2498) to renew the assault weapon ban. The banshee from the bay area had to use Rule XIV to get the bill put on the Senate Calendar. A thorough listing of facts surrounding the AWB are in this thread. 11. Don't get me wrong, McCarthy is still a SOS in my book, but he wasn't wrong. He just went about it the wrong way. (and he may have been a bit psycho) witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  12. Well, I'm impressed. They seem to have gotten all the facts, they showed both sides (though they might have given examples of the perceived corruption - unless it really was nothing other than losing in court), and they were specific. All "journalists" should take note that this is what a reporter does. Well done, Ms. Correll. for those too lazy to read, there was a .50 rifle (I assume BMG), two 'military style' rifles (must be black semi-autos), and some sort of handgun (type not mentioned). witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

  14. Ever read about the atomic boyscout? It's not all that hard to come up with a nuke. The hard part is not dying of radiation and coming up with a safe way to keep it. Anyone bent on terorism is probably not worried about that. They are worried about what the world would say about setting off a nuke (no matter what they're capable of doing, there is a whole order of magnitude between 9/11 and a nuke). That, and low rent nukes show up on satellites. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  15. Let me know when you can discuss the intricacies of state criminal law surrounding homicides. Or remind me the last time you aided a criminal investigation. Care to inform us of the pros and cons of Ceasar Beccaria's theorires? Can you perform CPR while in water deeper than you are tall? How's your German? Can you build your own firearm? [rant over] I know damned well the same device was used for several purposes. I did post the dictionary definition, afterall, so school or no, I realize that. Everyone's got specialties. Doesn't mean much to me. I learned Pythagorus, and Socrates, and Plato, but I don't remember much about Euclid. I don't know whether De Bello Gallico is an opera, a play, or other, and I don't particularly care at the moment. I'm involved in learning other things right now, and with the place of that in my priorities, I will probably stay "learning something else" rather than that. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  16. You conveniently leave out the fact that he was right, and that many congress staffers and the entire CIA was infiltrated. If we had relied on the CIA for info during the cold war, well, we wouldn't have had any. If not for the DIA and other agencies, we would have been blind, or worse, looking in the wrong direction. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  17. Well, I read some BS later on about "assault weapons," but it seems to have been just a semi-automatic rifle or two. I haven't seen or heard anything about a .50 cal. (which makes me pretty darn sure there wasn't one involved) witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

  19. I hate to be the one to tell you, but the sounds emanating from people's mouths on Clydeside are not an accent. They are an as yet unrecognized language with no known structure. You know how long it took for me to realize they were saying "Glasgow?" HMOG! Robin Williams did a passable immitation during his standup in NYC (HBO - Live on Broadway). I'm convinced even the language is the Scots' way of proving how much they can hurt themselves and not care. oh, and Red Skydiver - I only write or say "dude" when asking either "Dude, WTF?!?" or "Dude, did you really just do that?!?" witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  20. You only see this as a huge positive step because you believe the administration has, is, and would have continued to do everything wrong. Somehow you image the UN involvement will change things. I really don't understand why you think that. There are not new troops going in. US troops will still not go under the command of non US officers. The resolution doesn't require anything we weren't dedicated to anyway. The only thing in there that the adminstration didn't ask for is the "troops will leave if asked" provision. I don't see that as a big detriment to anyone. No one would ask us to leave, but if they did, it would only showthat the US and Brits were the only thing holding it all together. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  21. I was questioning the government's choice to pursue charges, not your attempt to portray both sides. I recognized that and respect it. My issue is what qualifies as an investigation in their eyes. If you and I are standing by a truck after an argument, and an officer rolls up because someone called in our argument (no signs of the argument when he arrives), I have to tell you, I wouldn't expect wither of us to be arrested for not telling him our names. Hell, if he doesn't see you and I acting hostile to each other, and we're on public land at the side of the road, he shouldn't even have the power to tell us to leave the area. Well, we're definitely in agreement there. (I really want to see the tape from the cruiser's dashboard cam in this one) This one I do understand. She became (understandably) enraged when her father was arrested. An officer, for his own protection, can handcuff people interfering with an arrest. As for her being thrown to the ground, well, officers will take a resisting person to the ground before handcuffing them because it is safer for both parties, whether the person being restrained understands that or not. The privacy issue is the constitutional one, and the more important one, in this case. I still wonder though, if the $250 fine for resisting arrest can be legally justified. Can they really claim that not giving a name is resisting arrest? witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  22. I was suggesting the title to quade only for this example, because that's what it is. Other than cops or military, I would wager most people (and most skydivers) don't know what the word means, even after today. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  23. That's the difference between no charges, Man(slaughter) 1, and Murder 1. (the names change between states, but you get the idea) The problem is you are picking a subset that might span all three, and making any crime in the subset (based on motivation) more severe than all three. I agree that a more gruesome or more depraved homicide could warrant a more severe sentence. But that should rest on the individual case. Intending to shoot and kill someone, planning it, and then shooting and killing them is a terrible murder, but most would say it is less so than torturing the victim to a slow death. That is why crimes have variable sentences. Different murders (tried under the same law) can have different sentences; 10-25 years with parole versus life without the chance of parole. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

  25. You do know there are probably three people on dz.com that know what a caisson is, and we're two of them, right? "Funeral Procession" might be easier to follow.
