  1. What, you'd prefer I called them vagrants or undocumented workers? The first one isn't a statement against sanctuary laws, it's a statement of what they do. And if you have a better name for these ordinances that limit an officer's ability to enforce immigration specific laws, please share it. I can use that if people find it has less negative connotations. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  2. More than preventing police from arresting based on immigration status, they prevent police, and often sheriffs at the jail, from verifying status. I'm not so concerned with police not checking everyone they come across and with them not being able to check people they are arresting for "real" crimes. You'd think once a person is arrested their status should be checked and if illegal they should be given the one-way ticket out of here. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  3. How in God's name is the third option an "anti" response? Stating that something should be encouraged in more cities is being against it? Please explain that one. I'm not following. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  4. Sanctuary Laws So what do you think? Are they a good idea? Are they local governments deciding which federal laws matter and which don't? Are they the reason some innocent citizens are dead? edit: I'm surprised I couldn't find a thread on this already. This was spurred by Rebecca Griego/Jonathan Rowan and the DUI/homicide in Virigina, among however many others. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  5. You might consider your own little "whoosh" there. Answer one question for me, if you can. What prohibition has ever managed to prevent people who desire and item from getting their hands on that item? drugs? Nope alcohol? Nope guns? Nope secret information? Nope radioactive substances? Nope Have you got one? I sure can't think of any. Now if you're wondering how this is relevant, you might consider that ever if every gun in America were made illegal, that would not stop crimes from being committed with guns, it will not stop crimes from being committed without guns, and it would not stop criminals from obtaining guns. This statement is borne out in countries that have tried this very thing. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  6. You know what? I just wasted over 45 minutes creating a well thought out, fact based post that cited sources and commented on counter arguments. I just deleted it. You want to know why? I already know what you'd say in response, and that all my effort would be wasted on you. In reality, nothing related to crime is a "simple fact," no matter how much you want it to be. Perhaps stating that "crime happens" would qualify as a simple fact. Not much else is, if anything. I'm going to give you a little assignment. I'm not going to do it for you because I've already shown you the numbers and it had no effect or you spouting falsehoods. I think that perhaps if you do the basic research yourself, you might understand. Maybe. Look up the number of guns in the USA. Look up the number of gun owners in the USA. Look up the number of murders, rapes, robberies, and assaults committed with guns in the USA. Now, take those numbers, and consider the fact that we know the vast majority of felonies are committed by persons who have committed many other felonies, and compare them to each other. For guidance, you might consider that the state of Florida did a study on its citizens who had concealed carry permits, and found that the incidence of crime committed by those people was far lower than the general population. In fact it was very similar to the rate of criminal activity was approximately that of law enforcement officers. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

  11. If the reporters got the facts straight, then the husband could be indicted because he was not defending his wife since the other guy was already driving away. If, on the other hand the guy was still on top of her when she cried rape and the husband shot her, he should face no charges whatsoever. As it is, he's lucky the grand jury was full of Texans. nb - charged = done by prosecutor indicted = done by grand jury convicted = done by judge or jury witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  12. It's only a constitutional republic if the constitution is still respected. As things are, this country strikes me more and more as a representative democracy. The statement was intentional. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

  14. Of course there is a problem with politicians. They are politicians. But how does that change the fact that some laws area good idea, some are merely tolerable, and some are just plain wrong? And no, the USA is not a democracy, it is a representative democracy. There is a very large difference. Just becuase the majority of the people want something that doesn't mean they are going to get it. Afterall it's important to remember that 80-something percent of the population doesn't give a shit about any given issue. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  15. Actually it's not, but you go ahead and think what you like. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  16. Because countries with strict gun control laws have lower crime rates. However, at some point there might be deminishing returns, or other variables have become much stronger, at a certain level of control cultural leanings might come more into play. Why do you keep trotting out that line when you;ve been shown that it simply is not true? Give it up. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  17. Except that crime rates in western countries with significant restrictions are generally better than crime rates in western countries with more lacks gun laws. You're really talking yourself into a corner here. First off, you've seen several times that the presence or absence gun control is not a good indicator of high or low crime rates, so your statement is invalid on its face. Second, even if it were true, as you said yourself, there are too many variables that actually do affect crime rate to claim that gun control is the reason for the crime rates. You can't claim gun control causes low crime rates and then claim it has no effect on crime rates. You can't have it both ways, so make up your mind. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  18. Then why is it that the first thing gun controllers call for when crime goes up or a terrible attack happens is restrictions on the availability of legal guns? I know damned well that gun prohibitions have little to no effect on gun crimes from robbery to murder. I just don't know why proponents of gun control can't seem to get that through their skull. (A) save your personal attacks, they don't bother me. I've heard worse. (B) my birds and aliens comment was in response to dorbie's statement about preventing massacres. It is silly, but he made the comment so I responded. Nowhere in that response did I claim in anyway that legal guns affect crime rates. Perhaps you should go over your own preconceived notions, rather than mentioning meds that don't exist. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  19. true, just makes it a hell of a lot easier. If you look at his entire post, you'll see that he also made mention that gun control fails miserably to affect the actions of criminals. The point is that gun control doesn't stop gun crimes. They obviously have no affect on how effect guns are compared to other tools or weapons for attacking people. Gun bans have only two basic consequences. (1) They take guns away from people who were not the problem anyway- people who don't break the law, and (2) they create a monstrous black market for firearms. Honestly, can anyone point to a situation where a government prohibition prevented people from getting their hands on a proscribed item? Liquor? Nope. Drugs? Nope. Guns? Nope. Prohibitions - aka bans, do not work, and are nothing more than prior restraint, an immoral and disgusting actions by an overcontrolling state. Finally, before someone with poor comprehension skills breaks out the tired "well since laws don't work let's just repeal them all" line, I've been very clear that I am against prior restrain and these prohibitions. I am not against laws in general, instead I am a strong proponent of law and order. Laws that define acceptable conduct and punish unacceptable (bad) acts are the foundation of our society and I would not speak against them for any reason. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  20. I've met someone who painted their house in glaringly bright pinks and yellows to scare off the aliens. Did it prevent aliens coming and attacking? "You'll never really know." I met another person who burns dried animal feces on Tuesday to prevent birds from conspiring against humans. Did it prevent the conspiracy? "You'll never really know." Doing something stupid and then claiming it caused something bad to not happen is astoundingly moronic. Just ask billvon when a hardcore rightwinger says some action of Bush's prevented terrorist attacks. (and there's more credibility there than in some gun ban preventing attacks) witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  21. You don't strike me as the guy who needs to hear this, but my advice is : TAKE IT EASY! A bike is a lot more fun when you and it are both in one piece. Stay safe and have fun. (too many people seem to think the two are mutually exclusive) Good luck on the search. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  22. Not daft at all. Just about everyone other than a lawyer is completely lost when dealing with a foreign justice system. I know I was and that was when it was being TAUGHT to me. Anyway, in most jurisdictions here in the states, after you are arrested but before you go to court for afelony charge, there is a hearing before a "grand jury" to determine whether there are enough facts and or evidence to show that you might be guilty, and that a trial is justified, or that the case is ridiculous and no trial is warranted. A grand jury is a group of people not associated with a trial in any way. They only hand down indictments or true bills (depending on location. Indictment is pronounced in-DITE-ment by most people. The thing to remember is that defense does not get to present it's case before a grand jury, which has led to famous quotes like "I could indict a ham sandwich." It's kind of like being impeached for judges and politicians here. It doesn't mean that you've bene tried and found guilty, it just means that the required group has said there is enough to justify a trial. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  23. Congratulations. Let us know how reliability and comfort go as you get more accustomed to the gun. I can't wait until the next gun show comes to town. I've got an education incentive reward coming from work and a good sized refund along with it. Oh, that last day is going to be nice. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  24. Cheap is bad, m'kay. But let's remember than low priced doesn't always mean cheap. Just look to Glocks. They run about half the price of a lot of respectable autos, and their reliability is legendary. Here I'm not following what you were getting at. At you saying that any pistols that are 'striker fired' will have problems? Glocks and XDs would seem to disprove that. Also, my little Taurus 650 CIA has no external hammer, but it has a fully moving hammer enclosed in the frame; it's just covered by a hump-back. Maybe some examples of what you mean could help me sort it out. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  25. I first read that and though "Holy Heck, somebody chambered a pistol for the H&H." Then reality came crashing in and I realized you meant 357.
