    Sometimes it takes a while, but eventually we come to believe that a round earth, a limitless heaven, the ability to fly, evolution, planetary formation etc do not "eliminate" religion. No, but for a large proportion of the population, the more we understand our world/universe (or whatever), the more our ideas change regarding what we believe god is, or the breadth and depth of our religious beliefs change. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged.     Every building has a builder. Everything made has a maker Maybe everything wasn't "made." Perhaps it simply is. It just could be that it's more complex than you or I understand. My lack of capacity to understand doesn't make me assign omnipotent qualities to a hypothetical god. Examining the evidence, that's what I come up with.     This is at least more rational and less venemous than a lot of what ya' hear 'em spew. "AIDS is a punishment for being gay," for instance. That one still gripes me, though they've finally gotten off that kick a little, haven't they? And apparently some would rather see a mother die or become permanently debilitated rather than allow her to abort a fetus that threatens her own life. Their celebration of PH's sentence is just a drop in the bucket, imho. "As sands through the hourglass, these are the days of our lives."     Of course I'm going to bring her in but I was looking for 1) a second opinion and 2) some idea of what to expect and prepare myself for. But funny that we don't chastise humans that seek a second opinion, but if its a pet...GOD FORBID! It's hard to give a second opinion when you haven't had a first opinion yet. The only alternate opinion is "don't bring her in." I'm with your vet. Let 'em look at it.     BTW The cause of death section on most death certificates asks for information on the deceased person's smoking history. I've filled in the cause of death on quite a few death certificates. I've never seen information on smoking history on one. Maybe I've just overlooked it. Who would provide that information? Just curious.     My aunt will probably be one of those this year. She has metastases to her liver, bone, brain, kidneys now. Never smoked, but her husband did.     I think it's clear that working in a smoke-filled room is not good for your health. I like people not being able to smoke in restaurants here. I think, though, that banning smoking in bars and adult-only businesses is a little over-kill. I tend to think that most people aren't stuck having to earn a living at such an establishment, and if that's where they work, it probably has involved their own choices. But I do see and understand that the decision to allow smoking is a little different situation than choices private businesses make that don't endanger their employees' health. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged.     Weren't you supposed to be one of the free market wingnuts when it came to what private businesses could choose to do? People can choose a different job? And then this?! -- I have a hard time believing that there is any PEL metric that wouldn't be exceeded in the bars I remember before the California ban. I think my clothes got a higher dose than is 'hardless' to humans. How do you feel about work environments that expose workers to asbestos? or to excessive radiation?     Which is exactly what you are doing. Atheists don't believe in religion. It's black and white as that. There's no gray line. There's no what if. It's plain and simple.     I agree. I love that people can't smoke in restaurants in Arkansas anymore. Remember when people used to smoke on airplanes? Smokers bitched way back then when the airlines shut 'em down too, but it's much nicer now on long flights without the pollution. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged.     ...out of a sense of duty to this country. To whom else can one have a sense of duty that makes it okay to break laws at ones whim?     Only within the limitations of the finite amount of information possessed in its genes (regardless of the time frame we're talking about) Given that genes are just sequences of nucleotides, and we know that mutations happen all the time in these sequences, I guess the "variations" that could occur over time could lead to a pretty incredible bit of diversity, even if you don't want to use the word evolution. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged.     Right. But what's wrong with letting you buy USDA-certified beef at a reasonable price, and also allowing another meatpacker to sell more expensive beef that's tested more extensively? Nothing at all. That's like all the *organic* stuff ya' buy at health food stores. If you want to pay twice the price, then go for it! I'll keep shopping at Mad Butcher. :) There's no reason to prevent a company from doing as much testing as they desire. But I wouldn't want all beef to be mandatorily tested.     Well, I'm not a bush supporter, but I have to agree that testing all beef cattle for mad cow disease is overkill. Testing would require examination of brain tissue of each slaughtered cow by a pathologist. The link between Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is strong, but not proven, and the incidence is rare. I think that testing a few sample cattle along the way should be adequate. In my mind, if a person is that worried about our beef supply, he/she should probably either raise his own cows or stop eating beef. I like buying steak at a reasonable price, and personally I'm willing to accept the small risk. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged.     Congratulations on the graduation! What an accomplishment it is to rear 'em to actually be responsible young adults (well....almost). I'll be holding my breath on mine for a few more years, but so far so good. And about Nick....I missed that drama.
