What was the little town in Georgia, years ago, that passed a law saying that every home owner must own a gun...or something of that nature. It wasn't enforced, but gun ownership did increase dramatically. People's homes virtually ceased to be broken into. Maybe somebody remembers this better than I do. My brother Ben and I have hated each other since we've been alive (he more than I, and for 41 years). He's a military guy, and I'm not so into that. But I'm proud of him. He hates that I'm a liberal...though I'm not completely (actually kinda far from it, but not in his eyes). And I hate his irrational conservativism...though he's probably not, entirely, that. Googled his name tonight, and here's what I found. This and this. I'm proud of him. I often disagree with him in a way that makes me think of him as almost not human. And he's the same way with me. Yeah...I guess I agree with that, but I figure the more people over there, the more coming home in a box. I don't much like that though. Guess I wish they'd all come home and leave the boxer-up'ers without a job--they can collect unemployment. But maybe that's the bleeding heart liberal bustin' through the tough exterior...lol. And luckily, doing the 12-step thing or being dead are not the only two options for addicts. (Though unfortunately, that is what most treatment programs will tell them.) I think that there's no doubt that George Washington preyed. Slave ownership is so wrong. Had a great grandfather of some degree who was hung for not fighting for the Confederacy because he didn't believe in slavery. I think that's BS if you're talking legally at fault. But I also think that a person who is responsible with his/her guns would take into account "what if they were stolen?" I think it only makes good sense to think that way. But what others are saying is that no matter what happens I am at fault if something bad happens. I think that IS a stretch, but if a suicidal friend brought her young children over and one or the other ended up dead....well, it's their own *fault* for messing with your gun, but they'd still be dead. I'm guessing that someone who has already used illegal drugs would be more likely to drink alcohol if it was illegal, than would someone who has never used illegal drugs. I've used illegal drugs. I answered 'maybe' because depending upon how accepted/unaccepted EtOH use were, I might or might not be at risk of losing my medical license for using it. Accidents....there are a lot of those every year. Often kids who pick up an unsecured gun and kill another kid. Seen too many of 'em. Suicides....lots of folks kill themselves with guns, obviously. I don't see where either of these is a stretch at all in terms of what might happen with your unsecured gun. My dad keeps a pistol in the drawer of his nightstand. My son and his cousins know the pistol is there. To me that's just scary. I've tried to teach Jay to leave it alone, and now he's old enough to understand. But when he was 6 was he old enough? I have no idea whose point of view the "constant, excruciating pain" comment is from. It's difficult for me to imagine that she was in that much pain and only treated with Tylenol. I'd bet there's probably more to it than is presented in that article. but I'm just guessing. I can't comment on how much value or quality her life had. All I know of this is what's printed in a newspaper. I'd just be REAL slow to condone killing any child. Not knowing the parent or the child, caring for a child with such great needs would undoubtedly be very difficult. With the wrong kind of parent, it'd be an easy argument to say that her suffering was too great to let her continue living, while in reality it was too stressful for the parent. There are lots of better ways to alleviate pain than Tylenol.... Cerebral Palsy, in itself, doesn't make a person's life meaningless. If the child was in pain, I'd say give her pain control. The fact that she was only prescribed Tylenol makes me wonder how much pain she was actually in. I haven't seen her medical information, obviously. ????That's insane. No it doesn't. You think I, as my son's next of kin, can just decide it's time for him to die????? NOPE! Not unless he's on the ventilator or requires other measure to keep him alive. That's the ONLY time it's my decision. Go read up a bit. edited to add: hell, I'm not even allowed to decide it's my OWN time to die unless I'm choosing to have no life-sustaining measures to be taken....like CPR, intubation...that sort of thing. Short of that I can be locked up and FORCED to live, whether I like it or not, if I decide that life's just too painful for me to live. I'm floored that people aren't more bothered by how spooky this is. This guy killed his daughter....for some reason. LOTS of people have cerebral palsy. Lots of parents don't kill their children who have cerebral palsy. My bet is, with *some* knowledge of the medicine, that if her pain were all that severe then she'd have been prescribed something more than tylenol. This gives me the heebie jeebies.
