I don't think so. I would guess that (like a bunch of teenagers) many of us do not acknowledge that it might be *me* who fucks up. The possibility of *my* cypres firing would not take up any serious space in my mind, probably....unfortunately. I would still turn mine on because it's safer to do so.... I would consider the possibility of its firing slim...and if it did fire, I think that its life-saving properties would outweigh a possible grounding by the dzo. Agreed - it is as serious as a heart attack. There is no jump out there that should result in one, nor should anyone put themself in a position to have a fire by screwing around and forgetting that large, round, fast approaching, hard object below you. I would never argue that. Plus I would never argue that a DZ can't make/enforce any rules it seems fit to keep them in business. My biggest concern is that a known public rule like this will cause people to keep their AAD turned off. A rule with positive, life-saving intentions can have just the opposite effect...esp with a crowd as stubborn and independent as skydivers. Grounding those jumpers that Arlo mentioned was a wise course of action - gross negligence like that is dangerous, esp in a large crowd. But think about this - how many 3, 4 or 5-digit wonders turned off their AADs during fun/practice jumps to make sure their full year of training wasn't ruined by a Cypres fire? Stupid idea? Yup! I've been a mom and worked as a social worker.....now I'm a mom and a medical student. I agree with you that being a mom is the most demanding job of all. In all fairness, though, T.H.K. is a republican at heart....lol The bold words are what make a difference in her statement. I take offense to what Heinz Kerry said. What is a real job? I stayed home and raised my boys till they were in school. I only returned to work after my boys were in school. I only worked the hours that they were in school. I dropped them off at school; I picked them up after school. I stayed home with them when they were sick, and I wiped their butts and changed their diapers. I cooked almost every meal they ate, and I washed all their dirty clothes. I took them on outs, and drove them to all their after school activities. Both my boys are grown now, and I work full time at a real job. But staying home and raising a family was the hardest job I had. I don't think so. GABA agonists (Valium, for example) are the drugs we use to prevent DT's. D2 antagonists don't have a role. I voted today. It's amazing how many people are out voting early this year. Usually you can just walk and and walk out if you vote early. Today I waited in line for an hour and a half. This kind of research is exciting, because of the potential impacts on addiction. The D2 receptor is involved in other addictive processes as well. The biggest complicating factor, in my mind, is that the D2 receptor is ALSO involved in Parkinson's disease, Tardive Dyskinesia, Schizophrenia, Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (life threatening). We frequently target that receptor in treating those illnesses, and it's not difficult to tip the balance and induce another disorder. Obesity is a HUGE problem. There's no need, in my opinion, to be politically correct. If it were nothing but asthetics then who would care, but you're right when you say that obesity is right up there with smoking in terms of morbidity and mortality. It's bad enough when adults let themselves get fat, but sometimes I think it should be considered abuse for parents to allow their children to be fat. It creates a whole lifetime of problems for people when they become obese in childhood. What are we doing about it? I think that we are doing some things in this country to improve awareness of the health problems associated with obesity. In my mind, a 30-day lay off would not be a punitive measure or something to serve as a deterrant, but rather some time on the ground to rethink my attitudes in the air and examine my priorities while skydiving. Coach jumps would not be necessary. Education, while always good, would not teach what I would need to learn about maintaining altitude awareness. I think this discussion demonstrates the degree to which people have come to rely on AADs as a back-up to altitude awareness. Be grateful that we have them for the lives they have saved. Have you talked to her about getting out of the situation? She might have some ideas of her own. Shelters are a good idea, but if she has other options she might prefer a different route. Slowing the growth of insurance premium costs is lagging, but that should be expected. While your article doesn't go into the details of Bush and Kerry's plans (I haven't looked into these myself either), I tend towards the more conservative side of this argument. If we were to look at trends for which illnesses are responsible for the greatest healthcare expenditures I would imagine that they are illnesses caused largely by bad habits: smoking, eating badly, lack of exercize. Trying to afford insurance is horrible. There's no doubt about that. We all want to fault doctors and lawyers though, while continuing to live lifestyles that make us sick. There are very few politicians who are going to be willing to stand up and say "if you want to drive healthcare costs down then quit smoking, lose weight, and go for a walk every day." Unfortunately one partner can leave the relationship long before anyone actually walks out of the house and files for divorce. When you promise "till death do us part," and your partner emotionally withdraws from you, then the decision to finally leave the relationship when you realize you're never getting your partner back does not mean that you take your marriage lightly. I've been married 9 years and have 1 kid. Right now I'm going through a divorce. I stayed with him waaaay to long, hoping that things would get better and letting him treat me like crap along the way. I was so determined to keep our family together because I couldn't stand the thought of my child growing up with his parents divorced. I HATE this for him, but what he was seeing at home was worse, imho. Nobody knows your situation but you. I think had things not come to a real head a couple months ago I would have stayed no-telling-how-long.... It's just a hard, hard decision to make. Divorce is stressful too. Regardless of who wrote the article and whether she overemphasizes the actions of one group of people while ignoring the actions of others, using intimidation and violence to drive one's point home is bad.
