First Christmas together: How much do you spend on gifts?
Lindsey replied to skymama's topic in The Bonfire
I've bought some really nice, fairly expensive gifts for my soon-to-be-ex. Even though our relationship is kaput, I bought them for him because I wanted to at the time. I don't see the money as wasted because the gifts weren't investments in our future. They were given without the condition of what would come. I like thinking of and giving a person I care about the perfect gift....something meaningful that is from the heart...not intended to impress but to show thought and consideration. A gift I give is given based on today. linz -
I love jumping too, but there are some things that are more important. Whether you're taking a leave from jumping because of pressure from her or because your marriage needs more of your attention or whatever, I have to say kudos to you for putting the relative importance of the two things (marriage and skydiving) into perspective. But I say keep the gear too...lol Peace~ linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail

Though I, in all my liberal wisdom (I've only learned that I'm a true liberal on this site), think that MM is a freak of Nature, I would still welcome the chance to hang with him for an evening and pick his brain. I HATE GWB, but I'd stand my dear ol' dad up to have dinner with him anyway. I'm pretty fond of Slick Willy, but I wouldn't necessarily stand up my dad to hang with him.....I understand him well enough already. Sometimes intrigue is a more potent motivator than accord. Funny. A very good friend and I had this discussion last night. I told him about a child sexual abuse trial that I testified at. The ONLY thing that convicted this man was my testimony, which was basically my recollection of what a child said and did during psychotherapy over a 3-4 week period of time. There were NO other witnesses besides me. While I thought the man was guilty, I was appalled that after just a couple hours of deliberation, this man was found guilty and later sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was found guilty on much, much less than "beyond reasonable doubt." He was found guilty due to the people of this small town's emotional connection with the victim and on the public defender's incompetence. I have no philosophical problem with the death penalty. Remember R Gene Simmons??? One of the people he killed on Christmas day 18 or 19 years ago was a very close friend of mine. I'm glad RG Simmons died. I do have a problem with how easily some people are convicted of crimes. Until that is somehow rectified, I can't support the death penalty. I remember many years ago when I first heard, "If Jesus were alive he wouldn't be a Christian...." I think it might be true. What's sad to me, though, is that the networks (where I have to pay attention to make sure my child doesn't watch things that will warp him *too* badly) don't want anything so controversial as a church welcoming all people into its congregation? That's difficult for me to fathom. Sign of the times..... what bothers me most is that people seem more concerned with supporting some political aganda or another than with really paying attention to events. When these trends are brought to our attention (those of us who don't always pay attention), then people automatically become defensive of our political positions and try to defend them without ever really thinking about the implications. We have become cattle. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail

I suppose it depends on what you want to do for a living. Your choice. My medical education debt is pretty frightening too....I sure as hell wouldn't want to be an accountant though, or a social worker.... I imagine that "what will work" is going to depend on what the cause of the problem was in the first place and on the jumper's attitude. A person losing altitude awareness because he/she's focused on something else and doesn't multitask well is different from the jumper whose cypres fires because he wanted to turn that last point and pulled too low, despite remaining aware of his altitude. If I were the dzo, I don't think I'd want to become a psychotherapist for a bunch of jumpers, trying to figure out what mental process caused the f-up or how I might be even *more* helpful in keeping them safe from themselves. I think making a policy like this basically says, "figure it out yourselves!" IMHO that's a pretty good approach. Peace~ linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. Not very long ago, someone started a thread on SC about people calling Bush a Nazi. I think that person was asking for some specific allegations that supported calling Bush a Nazi. I have no clue about the numbers, but I DO think I would have a more difficult time coping with my brother being beheaded than with him dying by some other means. I would have a more difficult time coping with him dying in Iraq than with him dying of cancer. I do think that one way of dying is worse than another. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail

Pharmacists refuse to fill prescriptions for birth control
Lindsey replied to headoverheels's topic in Speakers Corner
Seems to me that this guy is violating sections I, II, III, IV, VI, and VII of the code of ethics, and in particular this statement: The primary obligation of a pharmacist is to individual patients Maybe so.....Ethics is a strange thing. Many professions have a written Code of Ethics, which can be interpreted so differently by individuals to whom they apply. I think I'm glad that these are not laws but guideposts of sorts. I would hope that pharmacists and other educated professional people would have enough autonomy to make judgment calls where they are not bound by laws. Not much different from politics....lol linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail -
Pharmacists refuse to fill prescriptions for birth control
Lindsey replied to headoverheels's topic in Speakers Corner
I'm surprised that their Code of Ethics doesn't address this issue at all except maybe here and here I know that MDs discuss similar ethical dilemmas frequently. I'd be interested to see how much attention is paid to these issues in the profession as a whole.... linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. Pharmacists refuse to fill prescriptions for birth control
Lindsey replied to headoverheels's topic in Speakers Corner
I'd have to agree that if not filling a prescription were going to be life-threatening there'd be an ethical obligation. There aren't many life-saving medications that I can imagine pharmacists having a moral opposition to though (unless we were to have an influx of Christian Scientist pharmacists). A 21 year old woman of my acquaintance has birth control pills prescribed on account of her tendency to ovarian cysts. She has already lost one ovary to this. Who is a pharmacist to decide whether or not this medication is appropriate? I think this pharmacist is breaking the code of ethics of the profession. I don't think this is any different than a doctor who refuses to abort a pregnancy that may harm a mother's health. I wouldn't be that doctor or that pharmacist, but I would advocate on behalf of either of those professionals who, because of their (however misguided) own moral code, would not perform a procedure or fill a prescription. BUT if the physician (or pharmacist) had received this person as a patient, the onus is on him/her to provide an alternative to the patient....i.e. referral to another physician or pharmacist.. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. I wonder how many scientologist pharmacists there really are out there....leading double lives.... I don't see any reason that a pharmacist should be obligated to fill any prescription. We always have the option to shop around.... Peace~ linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail -
Yeah....well that too.... I imagine that there were far more women burned than men "quartered." So I don't suppose they were being nice to women.... linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail

I thought the "quartering" was the real crowd pleaser. Hmmmm....people have talked about burning at the stake as misogynist, but from what I just read about quartering it seems that that punishment was considered too severe for women, so women were burned at the stake instead. I'm not sure that we fared much better though.... linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
