I hate that our young generation has gotten so fat and lazy that all they know how to do is sit in front of the tv/computer game/x-box and click buttons! ltdiver Reminds me of a bumper sticker, "My kid can kick your honor student's butt" Heh... People are getting fat and lazy, but my 7 y/o is neither fat nor lazy, and neither are his friends. They ride their bikes to each others' houses. I do make him call me though, and let me know where he is. He hates to call, so I got him walkie talkies--that's much more suitable to him. They play football and baseball in the yard and on the playground like we did when we were kids. They climb trees and sometimes fall out. They ride mini-bikes and 4-wheelers (since Santa Claus came, my kid gets to join in that fun). They're skinny and fit, and I bet my kid (who is also an honor student) could kick YOUR (not yours lt....just any-ol' body's) butt!!! He does play x-box, watches cartoons on cartoon network, and just got his first laptop....so maybe there is a place for these things.... -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. I don't think Clinton, Kerry, or Bush have anything to do with whether or not the UN can be trusted with a bunch of money. I liked Clinton. I think Bush is an idiot. I wonder how in the world this ended up in court, Was she trying to make some kind of political statement, claiming it to be her right to kill herself with her food? Or did someone else act through the courts to make her stop eating so much??? I don't understand that at all.... I see people every day who are killing themselves with their food. It was pretty much gone, then people stopped getting their kids immunized. The immunization does not give you life-long immunity, so adults who were immunized as children can still get pertussis. In adults, though, the symptoms are usually not as severe, and it may not seem like anything more than a cold and cough. There are 3 stages to the illness. In the first stage, you have cold symptoms. It's most contagious in this stage. It usually lasts about a week, or maybe 2. In the next stage, kids get the horrible "whooping" cough. It's still contagious for about 3 weeks, or a week after starting Erythromycin. This stage lasts from 1-6 or 8 weeks. It can be very dangerous for children in this stage, and they should be followed closely by the doctor. In the third stage, the cough is still present, but it's not so bad. This stage may last for several weeks to months. So sorry your kids are feeling bad, ACME. No fun.... How old are they? When I read your posts, I can't help but remember how idealistic I was when I went to college--a very small liberal arts college, with a whole slew of very politically active professors and students. Heh....I remember once espousing the social welfare policy views of Mimi Abramovitz--one of the most left-leaning individuals on the planet, I imagine, and defending her perspective to my mother and little brother....lol. Even though I strongly disagree with most of those viewpoints today, I'm glad I studied and came to understand what that socialist feminist attitude is about. I couldn't have developed my own informed positions without that understanding. I think that holding such left-leaning perspectives requires a lot more thought than holding very conservative attitudes does. But it's also easy to think yourself into forgiving things that don't need to be forgiven. Some things just don't work. Just because it would be wonderful if the country were better-educated, it doesn't necessarily follow that hard-working people should foot the bill, for instance. Just because it would be nice if there were no homeless people, it doesn't follow that the rest of us should necessarily pay for their housing and getting them on their feet. I guess that depends on where you are jumping. When I did my first night jumps, we turned our headlights on to light the landing area. I live in one, and it happens. It's easy. Even here, the common knowledge is that you must be fired. It's not so. There are very simple ways around that. The problem is not just with unemployment, though. With most parts of the dole, people can work the system so that they come out much better than was intended. The rest of us pay. It sounds good to think that by putting money in, we're getting money back and blah, blah, blah.... I believe that to think so is to be overly optimistic about human nature. I've never lived in a state where one could quit a job on order to go back to school, and draw unemployment benefits. Every state I've lived in required you to be fired, or other not so easy to qualify for criteria before you are eligible for benefits. And if you are eligible, you have to be available to work 24/7. And they don't pay anywhere near 100% of your lost wages. The money they take from the system is paid back into the system, and then some, with the extra tax money collected after a better job is obtained. Everybody comes out ahead. The fact is that with a pretty good income a person can quit his job and draw unemployment for a year to get retrained. That's BS imho. One could take out student loans, but that isn't necessary when he can live off of others. The amount of income doesn't matter as far as I'm concerned. I don't consider it good use of MY money. I suppose I could've done the same during my first year of medical school and made off pretty nicely. Instead I went into debt, and considered the debt mine. It's my education, so it's my debt. I wouldn't dream of asking you to pay for my education. A person deciding to quit his job is not a person falling through the cracks in any way.
