    I haven't watched this very closely, but from what I understand she's not actually brain dead. She's in a permanent vegetative state. Her brainstem, but no other part of her brain, is functioning. So she has certain reflexes, she breathes, and her heart beats. She has no capacity for any thought or feeling whatsoever.     Despite how ridiculous it seems for this to have happened, it's the parent's reaction now that can determine what kind of effect it has on the child. A parent can teach the child that she is a victim or that this was a consequence of her behavior.     Here are a couple pictures of Jay. The first is from our camping trip a couple weeks ago. The other is from december. We had his 8th birthday party this weekend, and am I exhausted. Had an all-day party at the farm and a campout. Trivia: The trains do NOT run between midnight and 3:30 am. Otherwise they pass the farm with whistles blowing every 30 minutes. Exhausted children are not disturbed by these. The rooster begins to crow at 4am.... Exhausted children are not awakened by these either. You can't buy too many hot dogs....     Here we are with all these unwanted cats in the world, many of whom are stray and never have a loving home, others who are euthanized because noone wants them. All of this self-righteous dribble is ridiculous. Many, many people have their cats declawed, and I'm sure those people love their pets no less than all of you who think it's okay to sit in judgment. There is no comparison between a cat losing the most distal part of the phalanx and a human losing the same part of theirs. Cats simply do not use their fingers the same way people do. But, honestly, it would only minimally affect the function of a human's hand--we could do most of what we do without our fingertips too.     Happy Birthday!!! My little boy's birtyday party is Saturday :) I just bought all the hot dogs, hamburgers, party favors and such. I'll be baking *the best* chocolate sheet cake on Saturday morning! Y'all have a great party!!!!! Today was Match Day, and I matched into my first choice, a Family Practice residency in Pine Bluff, AR. It's a very rural and poor area, which translates into LOTS of pathology and pretty high volume for this area of the country. We have some awesome faculty that love to teach procedures.     I'll be celebrating with......MATCH DAY!!! Tomorrow is the day that senior medical students learn where we'll be going for residency. Our Caduceus club (parents' club) pays for us to eat, drink, and be merry all day at Juanita's party room.     Let's be clear about something else, the above is far from the norm and you very well know this; that or you are in denial. I personally work 30 hours per week while going to school full time for my RAship and I get paid $1668 per month, and this is considerably above average for one of the top 5 engineering colleges in the country. I know quite a few people making half this much working a full 40 hours per week. The fact that you can't adaquately use your RA is no fault of the system. [whine]I've worked sometime 100 hours/week as a medical student, and this experience costs me about $30,000/year. I wish someone were paying me. Of course next year is intern year, and I'll actually get paid about $38,000 for the who-knows-how-many hours I'll work then.     If the government won't help at one stage, it should not interfere at any other. I sure don't think women's reproductive health should be subject to any government scrutiny....at ALL. BUT I don't think it's because they don't provide the MEANS for women to avoid pregnancy. I just think that it's MY mind and MY body, and no legislators have any say about the choices I make concerning these.... There are a lot of things governnment doesn't help with. But because the government doesn't provide a person money, for instance, should there be no laws about theft? If the government, today, made birth control 100% available to everybody in our country, my stance on abortion would not change.     Most people of any race or religion alter their views when they learn new facts. Fundamentalists of most flavors generally don't. They think all the facts that matter are in their little book and everyone who does not believe is the enemy, to be converted. Thats the part I find scary. Me too....     I'm wondering how people would feel if this were a black male teenager who found the weapon and put it in his locker. Would people be so outraged? I do think it's sad that this is where our society is. Children aren't always going to make the most sound decisions, and it's a shame that a person's life can be so horribly affected by one bad choice when she's 12. I'm sure a lot of the same people who want to string children up by their toenails when they misbehave are the same people who would punish a mother for choosing not to carry a pregnancy to term....
