I went to my 20 year reunion last summer, and I had SO much fun seeing everyone and their kids! Some people whom I had been friends with and hadn't seen in 20 years had barely changed, while others I barely recognized. (Some people barely recongized ME!!!! It's not the mere usage of the gun that makes it bad, it is how it is used that counts. I don't advocate taking people's guns away, so please don't get me wrong. But knowing people who want to carry guns to keep themselves safe, and who want their children to carry guns because walking to your car is inherently *not* safe, this scenario always seems to enter my mind. So say you're a woman walking to your car after a late class, and you notice a man following you. You are a little on edge so you walk faster, maybe into a lighted path. He walks faster too, keeping pace with you. What good is your gun doing you? Eventually he is right behind you....*right* behind you. Maybe he even puts a hand on your shoulder. You have a pistol. What good does it do you? At what point do you use it? If you threaten someone with it, you'd better be willing to shoot him. At what point is he enough of a threat that you are willing to shoot him? If your fear has you prematurely shooting someone then YOU go to jail. If you wait until he actually attacks you physically then you're less likely to be effective with your weapon. If you're a cop going after some kid who just killed 7 people, that's one thing. If you're a regular ol' person who thinks he/she needs a gun for protection, then the circumstances in which you might use that weapon are likely to be different. I put regular unleaded in my car today, because I couldn't stand to pay 2.29/gallon for Supreme. However, I did put Supreme in my bike (/me does the double tit push). It does get 50 mpg vs 27 in my car, though..... It's only going to get worse. My car is 14 years old. I think that once I start work I'll buy a new Ford Escape hybrid. Genetically, humans have not changed in 30,000 years. If you consider how we lived that long ago, it's clear that being able to hold onto fat was a survival advantage. Fat that we hold in our mid-sections is particularly advantageous, as it is easily mobilized. The fat that we hold around our butts and thighs is not . It's that same fat in our guts that is particularly unhealthy if it is NOT mobilized and just sits there. People with excess fat can live for 60 days or more without food. Skinny people can live about 30. Of course that's a continuum, so please don't flame me for these numbers....of course they're not exact, but you get my drift. However, these studies were actually done during the Vietnam Conflict (I believe) with conscientious objectors. Anyway....I do know that genes are being localized that help us hold onto fat. I think Shotgun mentioned Leptin....that's actively being studied. I think that there's no doubt about genetic influence here.
