The problem is that with the flu, you get variation in the strains year-to-year by 1) genetic drift and 2) genetic shift. Genetic drift is what causes the minor variations in flu strains in typical years, and why you're *somewhat* protected this year if you got a vaccination last year. The bugs vary, but not dramatically, and most people have some level of immunity. Genetic shift, otoh, is a variation that is caused by a much larger change in the strain due to introduction into our population by another species...i.e. the bird in this case. I doubt that having been born prior to '68 would offer a person any protection, though having been exposed at another time to a similar strain could potentially offer some sort of protection, maybe. The way that influenza mutates, I doubt that an Avian flu strain today would be all that similar to an avian flu strain in '57. But I don't know. We had a big debate in here a while back about oral contraceptives. I asked then how people, who were anti-abortion, felt about a pill whose action can be to prevent implantation of a blastocyst, even though its primary mechanism of action is to prevent ovulation. If I recall correctly, at that time some of the people in this thread who argue against *this* medication did not believe that there was a problem with oral contraceptives in *that* thread. Do you really think that's true? Women who work outside the home, for example, so often snub women who choose to stay home and raise their children....and vice versa. Maybe these women aren't feminists.... I don't really know exactly how that's really defined. Mimi Abramovitz would define feminism in much narrower and more extreme terms than I would. Although I am pretty well educated and relatively independent, I really, really, REALLY like for a man to pamper me. I like to be treated "differently" than a man would treat his buddy. Although I do consider myself a bit of a feminist, there are other people on this site who absolutely believe that the way I like to be treated is discriminatory toward women. I, personally, would hate to see a time when I'm not treated like a lady by a man. Is that unfeminist of me? Is that unsupportable by feminists? Some of them? Most? But a doctor who holds, in this case, principles consistent w/ the Catholic Church, is only obligated to say that any procedure or drug administration that is explicitly for the purpose of aborting the product of rape cannot/will not be given at this Catholic facility. Implicit in that statement is that such services are available at non-Catholic medical institutions. Did you just say that BILL's statment was ignorant??? When a woman is raped and being taken to the emergency room, probably the last thing on her mind is that this facility might be supported by the Catholic Church and might somehow punish her for being raped. To say that if she wants care that is more in line with her own moral/ethical convictions then she should seek it elsewhere is a little outside the realm of what's acceptable. Then what in the world are you talking about? Providing information to patients about a medication that can prevent implantation of a blastocyst that may have been created as a result of a rape is, without a doubt, post rape care. In order for this medication to be effective, it must be taken within a relatively short period of time after the rape. She can't wait until she sees her primary care physician a week later. I don't believe it is all that different. In fact, equality in medical care is not a civil right I don't think. My point is that there are all kinds of people with all kinds of strongly-held beliefs (centries of doctrine or not, but still very strong beliefs). Nobody forces anyone to become a physician, but when one chooses to be a physician, his or her own beliefs have to come second to the patients that he/she treats. Physicians know that when they start medical school. If they simply are unable to set aside their personal religious beliefs for the good of treating patients, then they do not belong in the medical profession. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. What if it is the institution's belief that white people are superior to black people and should get preferential and superior treatment? What if it's their belief that people who smoke brought their disease on themselves and therefore should not be treated at all? There are all kinds of beliefs that people have, but medical care is not the place for those beliefs to take precedence over ones duty to provide care. That being said, if a doctor has ethical issues in treating any patient, he/she can refer or turn over care to another physician. The first physician, though, continues to have a duty to provide the patient the best care possible, regardless of his/her belief system, until another physician takes over the care of that patient. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged.
