  1. Put a piece of 8x11 paper with the long edge on top flat on a surface. Imagine the wind hitting it directly along the top edge. That's what the wind "sees", right? Now turn the paper 30 degrees or so to the right and imagine the wind coming from the same direction. Can you see that the wind now "sees" more surface area and not less? Owned by Remi #?
  2. I agree with this guy http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2012/12/06/subway-hero-on-photographer-not-our-job-to-judge/?hpt=ac_mid "It's not our job to judge his actions" Owned by Remi #?
  3. Some guy survives a 12000 foot fall even though his "chute" failed to open. OWKA Some guy had a mal and deployed his reserve. Owned by Remi #?
  4. Someone *partially* blew up a *stealthy* helicopter after making a *hard* landing and we're expected to believe the rest of this article? Owned by Remi #?
  5. No, you can only see where their cameras are pointing and the general direction of the front of their helmet, not where they're actually looking. Owned by Remi #?
  6. It's very, very common for new students to flare high. The most common reason that I see for why many new students flare high is that they stare down at the ground on final instead of looking at the horizon. That makes the ground appear to rush up at 'em and it scares 'em. Owned by Remi #?
  7. Will you be going back to the same DZ? Will the instructors there remember you fondly? You'll probably need to re-take the first jump course. Around my home DZ, someone in your shoes would probably be asked to repeat the category C jump with 1 or 2 instructors, then move back to the point you left off at if that goes well. It's a DZ comfort level thing and there are no hard / fast rules other than most follow and probably exceed the re-currency recommendations in the SIM, which is available here: http://www.uspa.org/SIM/Read/tabid/245/Default.aspx Owned by Remi #?

  9. Same here. I've tried to continue that tradition for others. Owned by Remi #?

  11. Hey Dave, I highly recommend hard wiring whatever you buy to your Internet connection. Netflix has a fairly funky method of determining how fast your connection is, and usually errs on the conservative side when it decides what resolution to send to you. A hard connection, from my experience, usually gets a better resolution. Do you have any plans to get an game console in the near future? If so, Sony PlayStation has built in blu ray and netflix support, plus other streaming video. Options without blu ray - If you have or plan to have lots of video in itunes, the appletv is a great choice. If you don't care about itunes, then roku is cheaper and great quality. I know you're not much interested in research, but this is a short, pretty concise explanation: http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20025670-1/which-streaming-media-device-is-right-for-you/ Edit for clarity: You can still add wireless to this mix. 12. Same here, Dave. I've had 2 Hornets. They are "lightly elliptical" like the Sabre2 and Pilot. Owned by Remi #?
  13. My inability to bend my arm back far enough to reach my hackey :-D (As a result of being very sore from lots of tunnel time the previous day) It's all explained in the lot more detail in the video description. Owned by Remi #?
  14. Hard main pull, floating reserve handle, low pull / CYPRES fire followed by a fast down-winder into a thorn bush with my reserve in a tree. That was a bad day http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JD8DjpMYOJA Owned by Remi #?
  15. I pretty much agree with you on all points... I would prefer that a guy who might be elected President understood that adding oxygen to a fire is a bad idea though. Critical knowledge for being President? Maybe not, but it kinda makes me wonder what else he's confused about. Anyone who paid attention in high school or college chemistry should know this. 16. Since the report states that he landed off the DZ, it's not very likely that he was spiraling "in the pattern". Sounds a lot more likely that he did an aggressive-ish turn to get facing the direction he wanted to land. Owned by Remi #?

  18. Not true. At my home DZ, the "spot" is at 476 feet and it only gets you within 4 feet of the peas in wind conditions between 3-76 MPH on hot days. Owned by Remi #?
  19. It's not a solid deal. It's overpriced for its age and it's going to cost a couple of hundred or so to get the Cypres up to date. Who knows if you need a new lineset on the main for a few hundred more? Most people recommend used gear for beginners, and that's good advice, but if you really were of a size that finding used gear is super difficult (and you're not, BTW. I suspect that you're just impatient to buy something) You could spend about $1000 more and you're getting damned close to the price of all brand new gear. Take a look here, for example: http://www.chutingstar.com/newgear_en/gear-packages/sport-skydiving-rigs Owned by Remi #?
  20. Is this gear even the right size for you? $5000 seems high to me. Edit to add a few other examples in the classifieds For example. You could buy this and put a brand new Cypres in it for less than 5000: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/detail_page.cgi?ID=132565;d=1 Similar size with newer Cypres: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/detail_page.cgi?ID=131485;d=1 Newer all around, much newer Vigil: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/detail_page.cgi?ID=132122;d=1 What's your exit weight and experience level? 21. I have a nylon / supplex Bev with the Coolmax lining. My overall review is that it just makes the suit heavier with no real benefits. It doesn't make me cooler in the summer and it doesn't make me warmer in the winter.... it doesn't do anything other than make the jumpsuit heavier. The idea of a poly cotton suit with Coolmax makes me think of just throwing on a suit of chainmail Owned by Remi #?
