  1. If you are OK riding a bicycle without goggles on, you can fly a parachute without goggles on. Do EVERYTHING that you're required to do to make sure that your canopy is good and your airspace is clear and you know where you are. If you have time remaining, slide your goggles down. That said, go buy your own goggles so that you aren't losing ours all the time when you fumble them trying to take them off Owned by Remi #?
  2. If the guy pays his card off he isn't inflating anything. He is, however, definatley taking up just as much of my time as anyone else using plastic to make a purchase, and that includes WIC cards. And in case it wasn't obvious, I really don't care if someone takes and extra 2 minutes out of my day. That's called "life" Oh, and: I'm not your "mate" Owned by Remi #?
  3. Isnt this pretty much the same as asking if the government should switch to using a privatized mercenary force? Owned by Remi #?
  4. I totally get your point. Just yesterday, I was waiting in the express line at the grocery store to pay cash for fresh fruits and vegetable and I was delayed about 2 minutes by the thoughtless bastard in front of me who was using a credit card to buy a couple of porterhouse steaks and a bottle of overpriced Zinfandel. I'm pretty pissed off that the management didn't send me to the head of the line because I had cash, I looked tired, and my groceries were more earthy. Owned by Remi #?

  6. Sorry: issues with my phone. I wanted to either continue my post or edit it, but I can't do either so I will continue this way. What I'm trying to express is that when the expectation level reaches the point that you expect someone to herd you along, I believe there is a problem. The majority of "old timers" I know do exactly what you are asking for. The majority of youngsters who continue to ignore them get hurt and hurt others. The answer isn't to complain that the "old timers" should stop preaching and start teaching. The answer could well be that the youngsters who are dangerous to others be asked to leave. Those who are questionable but not willfully destructive should get more attention. That attention should include more instruction in the reality that unless they take a more proactive role in deciding whether or not they should continue, they will face consequences. It's one thing to spend time and effort to help someone learn to fly and fly accurately and handle problems. Most people will do that. It's another thing to expect people to spend time and energy trying to change the behavior of an asshole. Owned by Remi #?
  7. I'm probably not going to articulate this well, but here goes: The problem isn't the teaching. It's the assumption that you will be guided through the process and guarded from mistakes. There is no doubt that instruction and mentoring are important tools but the really critical aspect is assuming personal responsibily and taking proactive measures regardless. People who exhibit destructive behavior don't always need additional nurturing and training. Many times they just need to be shown the door. Owned by Remi #?
  8. And you know these things how? Sounds like you're putting opinionated spin on something that had to happen eventually... unless you'd prefer that she never returned to work. Owned by Remi #?
  9. If the canopies are already flying in a stable configuration, it doesn't make sense to me to make any changes, particularly with a bi-plane. The reserve can accidentally (aggressive maneuvering causes an AAD to activate) or intentionally(problem with the main below 1000') deploy after the brakes have been released on the main. ETA: This makes much more sense to me than releasing the brakes on the other canopy This option provides the ability to give gentle matching input with the toggles rather than adding in the sudden surge caused by releasing the other toggles so that they match. 10. Are you why I was constantly erasing that advice from the whiteboard in the classroom? Owned by Remi #?
  11. This makes me crazy. If it's Monday and someone refers to next Friday, I think it means the next time it's Friday. How the hell can that mean not the next Friday but the one after that? It's as ridiculous as the phrase "I could care less" Owned by Remi #?

  13. ***If you were jumping with a novice jumper and their altimeter failed on the way to altitude, would you tell them not to jump and leave them on the plane to do a solo yourself, tell them not to jump and ride down with them, or give them your altimeter and carry on with the skydive? 14. It was a Cat A skydive. Those are not limited to to first jumps. Owned by Remi #?
  15. Jumping without an altimeter is not a problem at all once you have enough experience and a good eyeball for where you are. This is easier to do at a DZ where you're familiar with local landmarks and what they look like at important altitudes. It's harder to do in a strange place, but it's not impossible by any stretch. Jumping without an altimeter "because you have an audible" is more questionable. It implies too much reliance on the audible. weaverd: If you keep jumping, you will end up jumping without an alti for one reason or another. Your alti will break, fall off, get torn off, etc. It happens. Learn to be aware of where you are and what things look like at different altitudes. Look out the window as the plane climbs and guess your altitude. Look at your alti and see if you're correct. Practice until you are accurate. It's not a big deal. Owned by Remi #?
  16. This isn't intended to question your intentions at all, Andy. It's truly only a question about the physics of that response. Do you think that reaching across a student's chest in that circumstance and with the student equipped with an RSL, there might be some risk that you may entangle with the student as the RSL deploys the reserve? That could be a bad situation too. The video shows the reserve side, who has had a fairly firm grip on the student with both hands through most of the skydive, release the student's arm to try to clear the baglock and then peel the reserve handle and wait a short time before actually pulling the handle. He seemed well clear of the student and at little risk of colliding with him during opening. That's a good thing for both of them, in my opinion. I think the odds of the baglock fouling the reserve should be weighed against the odds of a 2 way funnel during opening. I also know I have never been in the reserve side's shoes and from wear I stand looking, he did a great job. Owned by Remi #?

  18. So.... You think 2 Chihuahuas have an equal chance of producing a Labrador Retriever pup as a couple of random strays? That's some pretty optimistic odds. Can you explain why the most financially productive plants and animals are not continuously bred with their siblings then? Why is it necessary for breeders to introduce extraneous stock? 20. When was the last time a US court enforced one of these things: "To have and to hold" "To love and obey" "To cherish and honor through sickness and health, poverty or wealth until death do us part" All of those things are common oral promises given in religious marriage ceremonies. Are they enforced in divorce courts? Owned by Remi #?
  21. Nope, but I can understand why you'd ask. Just had an inappropriately bitchy day. The "stupid whuffos" genre gets under my skin sometimes. Owned by Remi #?
