  1. Careful.....just because someone has not made a jump doesnt mean they dont know anything about the discipline or have an informed opinion on a particular aspect..... I'm sorry someone has died jumping and sorry it was in such a public arena.....I hope something good comes out of it , like a potential jumper, witnessing the incident , getting a dose of reality and perhaps thinking a bit deeper about motivations for starting .
  2. Troll MDV 305 /Morpheus Tech vented 36" PC For terminal jumps I have used the following: Large mesh slider, indirect control (2 wraps of tan rubber band), direct control (two wraps of small tan rubber band ) around 2inch 'grasp' of material from the centre of the slider. left 3 and right 3 nose cells wrapped inwards 3 times....opens briskly but comfortably. I had a couple of 180's with this setup but after exposing a bit more of the centre cell that was instantly cured, without an appreciable increase in the hardness of the opening....so I put it down to not exposing enough of the centre cell to begin with.
  3. getting off on the underhung side as well.....kudos..

    NPS Permits

Agreed....even sounded like he was 'encouraging' you to take a crack at it.
  5. Why....? If they make your packjob easier to control and therefore reduce the chances of a line going stray......why not? If you cant pack without clamps and dont have any...fair enough....but most people I know who use them are able to pack without them, no big issue I guess you dont bother with a safety razor then....preferring to use a bowie knife..?? Clamps are tools to make things easier, often faster and often more consistant.......just because you use tools does not mean you are reliant on them... I have a microwave...doesnt mean I cant cook beans on a gas stove....but I can cook them to the same standard, quicker, by using the microwave.
  6. I have not heard of a Rob Jonson...I assumed this was a false/pen name and was wondering who actually wrote it
  7. Does anyone know the author to that article...? The other question I have is ......why...? Sunday Times...?? Article on 'how' to get into BASE jumping....??? I dont get it....was it part of a feature on extreme sports etc etc??
  8. Get a rigger to sew a small piece of webbing with a snap on it to a front riser.....loop the webbing through the corrasponding slider grommit and then 'snap' it to itself on the riser. Or buy a set of risers that have this mod on already....

    Building Freefall

Purely out of interest....whats the lowest building height ( with minimal drama landing area ) you have freefalled.....even it it was a cheeky go and throw?
  10. Not if you fly a Birdman suit....apparantly they are amazing pieces of kit that can do anything....;)

    Canopy size

The lowest jump I have done to date is a 170ft 'A' which was Static lined. This gave 6 secs to touchdown......interestingly, all of the other jumpers had the same time......(canopy size range 220? -305)......I still dont understand that, as well as not understanding how much I enjoyed that jump that low !

    Canopy size

I'm not going to offer you advice on your canopy size, I'm sure someone with more experience will. I will offer you my own personal experience and thoughts I weigh 217lbs and have a Troll 305 MDV. Bigger canopies weigh more and so the time from extraction to deployment may take marginally longer, which is just something that needs to be kept in mind when deciding to jump low objects. I cant say its something I could quantify but i definatley have noticed a difference in the time it takes for my canopy to be 'flying' compared to that of others with smaller canopies....for no other reason it seems other than canopy size.. I have no time on unvented BASE canopies , but for my size and likely objects a vented canopy has to be beneficial. Somebody I trust gave me good advice on sizing once saying ' You will almost never regret having a larger canopy, If in doubt ...go larger" I think you also have to look at the objects you are going to be jumping.... If you are Swiss or Norwegian and doing mostly big walls, you may well want a different size canopy to that you would 'want' doing low 'A's at night with small landing areas.
  14. I wasnt around in the 'good ol' days' of Blinc......but its still a fantastic resource for me, I just wish it was 'current' DZ.com BASE Zone has also been a great resource, but more because it has been kept current. The issues I have are not with the moderator, but more with the moderation.......there have been times I wanted to ask a general question, opinion but was afarid of the tone or content enough that I deleted the post myself , fearful of a backlash from 'popular' forum contributers, that may affect how future posts I made were responded to. Whilst the antics of the few people who rant on and on about nothing, or constantly whine, or bullshit on this forum quickly lose my amusement, there is still a wealth of knowledge , experience that I find incredibly useful and wouldnt want to lose. Whether its Blinc, DZ.Com BASE Forum or a third option...maybe having 'bullshit' and 'no bullshit' ..sub forums might help ,with the latter being moderated, and the former free to allow people with issues on other jumpers vent their feelings in a more 'chat room' like forum.....everyone is happy then. Accomodating both in the same forum and trying to maintain its integrity....is a losing battle from the off. One last observation ....DZ.com BASE forum has fast been moving away from being an informed , useful , factual resource .....to having more content based on whining and bitching, whatever the reason it would be great if it swung back the other way. I would love to see much more technical discussion , tapping into (and contributing to) the vast global experience passing through this forum......wasnt having a 'good time', considered experimentation and sharing knowledge some of the foundations this sport was built on..??
  15. Any locals / Mucho Base crew.... going to be around jumping those dates..? Please PM me... Thanks Darren

    Why static line jumps Nick..?
  20. Fuck me magot....you actually managed to give some good advice without being such a 'whores douchebag' about it..... It seems wrong to say it....but I'll take your advice and appropriately say ..'Thankyou' for sharing it That one has just earned you one less smack in the mouth when we meet........so at least you will be able to tell Mom what happened to you
  21. What specifically is the problem about high tailwinds and deploying a stowed PC in comparison to going handheld in high tailwinds.....? Are you talking about an issue with PC inflation or an issue in the bridal being blown 'forward' Briidal management going HH in higher winds has been an issue/concern on a couple of jumps I have done...ie ....the bridal when HH has blown about quite a bit on and immediatley off the exit point... Could you elaborate on your post a little bit please ...and thanks
  22. Pretty much every 4 way cam I know has hit the formation at some time.... Rather than the scolding Jimmy is giving you I would suggest that if you know why you hit the formation ...and its something you can learn from and not repeat , then it happened and you learned from it. Jimmy, I'll respectfully suggest that you are in a minority of people with that many cam jumps that didnt hit the formation at least once whilst you were learning. More to the point would be ...analyse the situation ...why it happened...and guage your reaction to it happening...what did you do...? ...did you put hands out in front when you realised imapct was imminant or did you fight for drag till the bitter end......these are the things to take away from the situation, as well as a strong realisation of the potential dangers of hitting the formation.

    base advice

I think the content of this thread puts you in two different taxis heading on parallel roads.... but both arrive safely at the same destination.. PS I love my Gargoyle...

    BASE in Iran

Whats with the book...(is that a Qu'ran?? ) in pic 223297 That would be reassuring on the exit point...! 9 cell canopy and skydiving rig as well.....OK...maybe a verse from the Qu'ran couldnt hurt.... Looks like a really nice object....although getting there/staying there would probably be more dangerous than the jump itself !
