All, Just to keep you all updated, there will be a wake for Tommy this Sunday in Chicago from 3-9PM. the location: Ahlgrim, James - Ahlgrim & Sons Funeral Home (847) 882-5580 330 W Golf Rd. Schaumburg, IL 60195 Details about the funeral are not available yet, but it will most likely be on Monday. I will keep you all posted. Keep the memories of Tom coming by the way.. the family found dropzone.com and has been reading the kind words you've all shared about Tom. Another funny memory of Tom.. a big fan of "party boy" from the Jackass videos.. I'd walk into the hangar and ask him.. so um.. you feel like partying? "Actually.. I feel like partying right now.. " and he'd make the crazy soundtrack noises and started bouncing around.. I miss you tomgusto.. 4

Of course this all depends on what kind of shots you are looking for, but I personally wouldn't go wider than 24, and as I said.. my favorite before going digital was my 28mm. The Sigma 15mm is so popular in digital skydiving photography cause 15x1.6 comes out to be the 35mm equivalent of 24mm. Just a thought.. If you are going for the 15mm, you will get all the fisheye effect and you are going to have to be really really close to your subjects to fill the frame (if that's even what you want of course) Again.. it all comes down to what shots you are looking for... my vote would be between the 24 and the 28

The Canon 28mm F2.8 is THA ticket buddy.. I can't wait to get my own 5D and I can start shooting that glass again.. It still is my all time favorite skydiving lens..

All, I just heard back from the family. There will be a wake this Sunday in Chicago. The times are 3pm-9pm, and details on the funeral home will follow shortly. The family is emailing those to me. I will keep you informed. If any of you have nice recent pictures of Tom that you would like to share with the family, please send them to me and I will forward them on to them. Please send them in full resolution so they can be printed. Notes, funny events, nice memories of Tom.. anything. If you don't want to send them through me, that is fine, let me know and I will share their email address with you. email them to: iwanvdschoor (at) gmail.com at this time I am not pointing them to this website yet, the family is not really ready to read all the details of what happened, specially not the off topic discussions that are going on in his incident thread. I'd say the XTi will do more than enough for that application.. Scott just wants to be like Mike (McGowan) Actually.. if I had the money right now, I'd get a 5D as well..

Predictability of 270 degree turns: (Was Fatality - Eloy)
vdschoor replied to Chris-Ottawa's topic in Safety and Training
Chris, I disagree with you, and I think I can make you agree with me (or at least understand) after you read my post.. (and if this makes sense to you) Swoopers still fly a pattern, even when they do a 270 turn on final. Your pattern probably looks like this: 1000ft, setup downwind of your target and fly downwind to 600ft At 600ft, make a 90 degree turn onto your crosswind leg and fly to 300ft At 300ft make a left hand 90 degree turn onto final, and fly straight till landing A swooper, flies the exact same pattern: 1500ft, setup downwind of your target and fly to 1000ft. at 1000ft turn 90 degrees left and fly to 600ft. at 600ft make a 270 degree right hand turn onto final and land. Draw this out, and you will notice at no time is any of the two "breaking the pattern" The one huge thing is though, the swooper needs to look out for the people that are flying a normal pattern, and make his decision based on that.. can I safely make the swoop or not? The swooper is the higher canopy, and therefore has to give right of way to the lower canopy at any given time.. so if anyone is flying the "normal pattern" below him (or her) he needs to let that person land and cancel his decision to make the swoop landing. -
See ya later Tom.. love you I'm gonna miss not being able to make you sick on the ride up in Byron.. or having a brewsky at Bon Gustos... I know you're up there looking out for us, just like you did on the ground.. Blue skies my friend..

Gotta love being on the road with some tech geeks from NorCal.. live updates on the drive to Eloy he he.. about 300 miles to go, the mad man Ficus is driving and Bustos is sleeping..
-
Today.. about 800... and there's a bunch of traffic..

you didnt give any details about yourself (mostly.. weight) A smaller canopy will be loaded more than your bigger canopy. Therefore it becomes "more high performance" things will happen faster, turns will be faster, your canopy will lose more altitude in a turn.. all things that can hurt you.. (and will if you are not careful) Jump the 150 a whole bunch more before downsizing to a 135... the Stiletto 135 is an awesome canopy, but definately a high performance wing.. your jump numbers are fairly low for a canopy of this size.. (even without knowing your weight) Be careful, and seek coaching from a more experienced person on your dz.

Canopy Choice/Swooping Advice for low weight jumper
vdschoor replied to wonderwoman07's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
He girlie.. I've seen you fly your canopy, and here's where I would go next.. Try a Sabre2 107 and a 97, I know you're in Eloy right now so its the perfect opportunity to demo gear. PD will be there and usually Icarus is there as well, see if you can demo gear in that range.. A 97 would still only put you at about 1.4, but at those sizes, that is a big jump... -
I am still using regular DV tapes in my HC-1 What is the benefit of using the HD tapes? It tops off your lens fluid for you. I'm ordering a whole batch right now.. The reason I asked is because I read somewhere that it really doesnt matter what kind of tape you use. I use the standard Sony miniDV tapes and they work just fine.

Please dont see this as an attack.. but what makes you think they will let you jump with them once you have a camera? If they dont let you jump with them without one, why would they let you with a camera? I just read over this thread again.. and my last post in here was almost a 1000 jumps ago for me.. every single jump I learn more about why certain things go the way they do. You have to earn people's trust and respect.. and that takes time.. I was jumping at my current home dz for almost a year before people got to know me.. why? Cause i would show up at noon, make two or three jumps and leave again (dang.. what was I thinking!!) Not to say there is anything wrong with that, cause there totally isn't.. but I had to invest time in the dropzone and the people there for them to get to know me.. Ask people to jump with you, don't expect to be invited on jumps at first.. cause that's how it goes a lot of times.. once they find out you're one of the people that knows what they are doing, and you are fun to jump with.. the invites will start happening anyways.. Just wearing a camera on your helmet will just make people think ouch.. there is another one that's a little to eager to start jumping with a camera.. Again.. this was not meant as an attack.. just some things I've seen in my 10 years in the sport.. If you're ever in NorCal.. or in AZ during the Holiday Boogie.. for sure look me up.. I'd be more than happy to sit down with you, or even more important.. jump with you!! Stay safe my friend!!
