Putting skydiving videos on the net
Chrisky replied to bigfritz's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Well, first thing you might consider lowering the data rate available for encoding and setting a lower keyframe value (This will immediately loose you quality, tho). Another thing you could try is decreasing the resolution, setting it half of the original size. This will also loose quality of course, but it might be acceptable. Ultimately comes down to what you want the video for. Just to show it to your friends, reduce the image size. Or make a small LowQ and a big HQ file. My 5 (5:XX?) minute snippet excerpt from the DVD i made is about 19 Megs, but it's only half res, if i remember right... Btw, good tool to Check your Avi. Hehe, my Wings should arrive this week, so i'll have it assembled on the weekend.... I guess i'll post pics of it here too, for _you_ to get jealous... Weather here should be good on the weekend... Ahem, why didn't you just mail PD themselves? They'd know for sure... The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... Not every Swooper hooks & not every Hooker swoops ...

Yup, still almost saw the light, but had like three month w/o proper equipment and time, hopefully i'll put the world upside down this weekend again... I wouldn't have thought so, but how should i know? Just about to get my first rig with dive loops...

Well, the other question i would be interested in, are cypres required at swoop comps? And do all the competitors use one? Just curious, not implying anything.. The ProTrack gives the warning sound at a speed of over 29m/s vertical descent rate, so there is still about 20% speed margin to the 35m/s vertical speed needed for a cypres fire. I may suggest to you searching for that topic, i remember reading many helmet questions recently. All subjects covered, fullface vs. open, altimount inside vs outside etc etc etc... Yeah a buddy at my former dz was just like this. The trouble was he couldn't track shit (by which i donot mean you can't). One time i told him i wanted to check his track out, so i'd stay put on separation and he'd track away. He did like two meters, went "back to box" and deployed... Made a nice video, but wasn't my favorite separation. As i've seen this a few times with other jumpers too, i recommend getting somewhat proficient in flat flying (no, i'm not into flatflying either, but still). Didn't mean that you have to wait like 80 jumps like me (there just were two(!) Freeflyers around my DZ by that time, so i didn't get "a good start"). After all, flat is our "base plane" we all return to prior to deployment, and you don't want to have shit happen there once there's a few people around. Another buddy of mine went straight to headdown after about jump 15 and was able to stay in it until deployment. Yet, he couldn't do a controlled sit or _any_ kind of transition. He thought he was a kickass freeflier after that, and he also got a BT Pro 120 a few jumps later. I don't know what became of him, as he moved to a different place just after that boogie, but the last thing i heard from a common friend was he broke his legs like two weeks later and was out of the sport for a year. Apart from that, a general remark, i have seen many people starting to freefly and not paying much atention to breakoff and separation procedure. That's something quite dangerous and we all should brief it on n-ways separately for safety reasons. Just a reminder! The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. Basically the principle of function of a barometric altimeter is very simple, so i doubt that there were any significant improvements made since the 60s... Simple is just best, low tech rules. It's a metal pressure bubble expanding(on way up) and pushing up a small bar being translated into the needle rotation. So the deciding factor on accuracy is the manufacture and quality of the pressure bubble (sorry, i'm german and only know the german term for it). So it might be that they are somewhat more precise than back then, due to more precise manufacturing, but not decisively. And if you have the manufacturers certificate, you can calculate the exact altitude (except for when you get the result, you're already at a different level...). **Newbie Looking for chute and training**
Chrisky replied to jphillips2000's topic in Safety and Training
Kill this thread, please, it's in S&T as well as in Gear and rigging. It's very disturbing popping in here seemingly not even caring to read the rules and going a search firstand then opening two (or maybe more) threads of same question. No help from me on this one. Well, as the normal standard alti works barometric, the problem should still be there. if you look at you Pro-Track records, it takes 5-7 second to measure the data correctly, too. The cause might be the sudden change in pressure? Also, barometric altimeters tend to have a certain amount of mis-showing, that's why they usually come with a testing certificate showing the precision and misshowing at different pressure levels. I.e., my baro shows 4200 at 4000 meters, while beeing exact at 1500 and being low -100 at minus 1000 (whoever needs that, i wonder). My Suunto is pretty precise, much like the Pro-Track. New - Rebel Freeflyer License system - structure and organization

Or maybe just Freefly Proficiency. Like having Freefly Proficiency Grade A, B and C or whatever. FFP sounds good to me... The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... Not every Swooper hooks & not every Hooker swoops ... -
I'm a believer! Sadly, this renders me a single most of my time... A relationship will always work, when you love the other one more than you need him and vice versa. New - Rebel Freeflyer License system - structure and organization
Chrisky replied to Levin's topic in Freeflying
Now, i'd go for a poll for the name. I think Rebel Freefly sounds kinda cool, but it's kinda "be a rebel for just being one", which is uncool... I think Universal FF License would be ok, but it sound a bit like beeing the only "true" thing out there, so i don't really prefer it. VRW also narrows it down in my POV. I'll try and think of something myself, then post it here... Just critizism from me so far... The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... About 80 jumps, until i got a confirmed good track and belly control. (Yes, somewhat beyond AFF level 7)... Then spent like 30 jumps on sitting on a boogie, after which it worked really well. If you think you can "hold" a sit for a given time, forget it. You can't hold it, just stay in it, working. It's not a "stable", just a controlled position. You can keep it under control for the whole dive though. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... Was in planning for live air-to-ground at the DZ in Spa. They have the whole setup, but the quality just wasn't as good as native DV. They still do it though. i think there was a bit of trouble with proper energy and transmission cable routing/connecting. Apart from that, i have no idea of the money factor... Should equal out prety soon due to VHS tapes, tho. Or did i get the whole completely wrong? The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... **STUPID NEWBIE QUESTION** What makes a parachute work?
Chrisky replied to Nightingale's topic in Gear and Rigging
You did do an AFF jump without doing a drill cutaway in a hanging harness??? Kick your instructor if that applies! Apart from that, just take a rental rig and pull out the pilot chute and all that comes out after, and have a packer, instructor or rigger explain the deployment to you step by step... The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... Not every Swooper hooks & not every Hooker swoops ... -
Yeah i love their puzzled faces when someone nakes a dumb joke!

I second that thought soo much! Doesn't include the A license the ability to pack a parachute? My german license entitles me to even repack my own reserve, which i think is kinda scary and some (thankfully very few) people cheat the repack cycle like this. But if i can't repack the gear i jump and there's no packer around, what will i do? Stop jumping for the day? NO WAY! How are people to know if the equipment they jump is in order or not without packing it? It is a matter of responsibility and safety. An A licensed skydiver can jump at ANY DZ he wants. (right?) So he sould be able to do the whole job. MHO The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... Not every Swooper hooks & not every Hooker swoops ...

Well, for my part i'm in for the side mount. On my helmet i can switch the camera in the mount 180 degrees for head-up footage on headdown jumps. the top mount ist good too, if you can get your slider around after deployment if you wish to. Apart from that, the top mount presents less "snagability" while presenting a longer lever to your neck. The sidemount feels safer to me, as i usually always turn my head to "look" at my hackey when pulling, thus having the cam mount facing down (mounted left) and away from the upcoming risers. This is not adviseable however, because the neck should ideally be straight on deployment. It also depends alot on your camera. Apart from the pocket wonders, cameras used to be bulky and lengthy, so you wouldn't have been able to mount them anywhere else than on top of your head or under your belly. I'm currently jumping one with very worn velcro (until my new wings arrive in two weeks). Last week, while doing cartwheels, one of the risercovers came open, relaesing the (triple) riser and unstowing the toggle. I immediately went to the box, grabbing the toggle and holding the riser cover shut til deployment. Got a hefty snag against my arm from the toggle (which i let go to deploy of course) and of course opened in a spin. Thus, i definitely do not recommend FFlying one. While it may be ok for a sit (without cartwheels), it could be a nasty premature. If you could afford a rig with better freefly friendlyness, i would go for it. It's not good to jump with a bad vibe in the back. Just my two cents
