  1. All said until now plus: so you'd rather leave your trash lying around in the environment... Dude, clean up your attitude... The mobile of a buddy of mine left his velcroed pocket on deployment, he found it because it was still operating and he just called his number... 2. Well, most dealers (as i understand) have gear stores at a DZ. Just ordered a new Wings container via the net (Square one), had my measurements taken by a rigger at my DZ and emailed the order to them. Had very good feedback via email from both the dealer and the manufacturer to clear up any misunderstandings, and the rig arrived in perfect condition and fits _perfectly_. So so far, i can't say anything bad about online shopping. Sometimes the dealer at your DZ shop might be able to squeeze out one or two percent more rebate, but apart from that, there's not much difference. 8. Had a problem with flaring asymmetrically around these 40-50 jumps too. My instructor told me to look at the horizon line and not at the ground. Why? You know instinctively which height above the ground your eyes should be, because that is where they are most of the time... As for the right time to flare, well.... Practice... You will need to work on your timing, meaning to judge the down- and fowardspeed of your canopy. Once you can "feel" how fast it is going, you will know how long it takes to level out in a flare (by having done so at enuff altitude) and just combine that to a nice flared landing... Sounds like you don't feel that safe and comfy with jumping it? Did you jump that canopy (same size and type) before and do you feel that you can handle it in all situations? If not, sell it and get the one you're comfy with. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... 9. Well, although you are _never_ safe from a malfunction, there is a lot you can do to prevent them or to lower the risk. A friend of mine had a total mal (tension knot on D-Bag) on his first AFF jump, i never had a mal myself yet in 350 jumps. Most cutaways are not from total mals but from malfunctions of a partially or fully inflated canopy which prevent the jumper from controlling it and thus landing safely. Thus he cuts away. A good rule: Always expect a malfunction, so be in training and practice your emergency procedures _all_the_time_. It will help you once your expectation is met, even unexpectedly. 10. Same thing with the cypres and dytter, btw. If you live close and level to the DZ, just let them shut off automatically (after 14 hours). If your way home is long and covers some alti changes, turn everything off manually at the DZ. This will save you batteries an either.
  11. That sheds a different light on things. Although PA should have been able to find it by hanging up the canopy, but that's all what-if s... 17. [smartass] Well, when i assembled my first main i had a rigger look over my shoulder giving me a hint or two. As you usually lay out the canopy all the way, it should have been noticeable. Fix your risers with some weight, then pick up the canopy by the tail and lift it (have someone help) with the lines stretched. Then you should see the lines are getting longer (or not) from the bottom up. [/smartass] This is not to insult you or be a smartass, just to keep people away from the idea that they can do all the stuff themselves. And if it's a brand new canopy, having a rigger take a close look can't really hurt.. Happy it went all right for you anyway!
  18. Put it on outside the plane, wait till like 330 m (when my dytter and pro-track beep) then usually take it of. Not only for the emergency, but also to check my audibles' functionality. W/ or W/o cam. Didn't give me a better feeling on that caravan load w/ 19 jumpers and all fueled up tho... The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. 20. Well, i started at like 130- 150 with my first solo sit-tries. Then i went to a boogie with some buddies, did 30 jumps in a week and had a pretty solid (yet extendable) sit. Now like 200 Jumps later, head-up is rock solid and i've been trying getting into solid&controlled HD for like 50-60 jumps, and progress is slooooooow... I share your opinion that people should train their belly skills first to a degree where one can rely on them beeing able to hold level, track and have a general sense for where people are around them. This "Radar" is more easily buildt on "slower", 2D dives while increasing the number of people around... 22. Now that i've got my Wings, i can't say anything else would outclass it. I had wanted to get a Jav Odyssey before i got the Wings. What bothered me on the Odyssey is that they still use that IMHO outdated main top flap design that IMHO just won't shut failsafe on top of a bulky pack job or big main.. When i want to check my Wings, i have to use a certain amount of force to get the main pin cover flap undone, and it is long enough on new rigs for sure. Say two inches on the main flap. Apart from the reserve container design, flap protection is very similar on most containers anyway (except for SP). Comfortwise i must say that my new Wings is the most comfy rig i've ever put on. I would get another one anytime an can only recommend it. Forget it, dude, yours won't live up to mine! The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. 23. Ahm, who assembled the rig with the wrong lines? If it was a rigger, i wouldn't get his service again. AND tell him that he overlooked it. I think if P.A. hadn't exchanged that for free, that couldn't have been called service... (Not supposed to say they don't have good service!) Glad you got out of all that well. 24. Well, generally you should have a certified rigger take a look at it if you're not sure about it. That said, if the top and bottom skin are alright and the lines too, including the connections points, there shouldn't be any damage inside the canopy. I've seen an really old rigger (in terms of experience, 40+ yrs riggin') pull a canopy from a tree bringing down half of the tree. I thought he'd waste the canopy, but it was in perfect order, only the lines had to be untwisted (jumper cut away when hanging in the harness at 2 feet). So a hop'n'pop could be fine, then try some flares, if that all works, you'll be fine.
  25. You speak from my heart! Got taught most of my skills by fellow jumpers at no charge. Give what you get. Don't have a coach rating myself (german system is a bit different), but i would be sure to check back with any instructors before i'd jump with an unlicensed jumper. Doesn't apply to me though, because i'm more approached for freefly jumps, too. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ...
