Great to see you making another jump, and I am glad that your getting to do the things that you want to do. There is nothing like the feeling of acomplishment

Right, but there are no guidelines for what to do/not do when looking for a pin check. I mean, it sure seems simple, open flap, look at pin, look at bridle, alert fellow skydiver if there is problem, else close flap and move on. There must be something more to what goes wrong or people are doing wrong that there is such a concern about people letting others do them. Is it just unfamiliarity of gear? or is it that someone might mess with your pin even though its ok? We have heard that there can be problems like this, but I would love to hear some guidelines. (p.s. I'm not trying to sound argumentative or anything like that, I seriously would like to know) ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. I would like to hear from the experienced people about what they think should and should not be done in a pin check. When I ask for one, its only on the main pin, because I have checked the reserve one before I got in the plane, and things that I will have noticed that could effect it are open flap, reserve handle snag. (Is there something I haven't thought about?) That being said, if the flap on that is ok, it should still be ok, no need to have somone mis-close the reserve flap. On the main, for the rig i have its pull it down to open it, flip bridle see green, pin seated correctly, good to go, close flap... have fun. So anyways, from the experienced crowd, Things to do and not to do, generally speaking on a pin check. Education is the key. One of the things that people are saying is a problem is the '50 jump wonders' either not getting pin checks, or giving them wrong. So I would like to hear things about that so that I can learn. arguing over the merit of a pin check doesn't help. In a perfect world we wouldn't need one, in a slightly less perfect world a pin check could never cause a problem only help one, in the real world there are many things that can go wrong and hearning the good and bad things to do when checking someones gear would certainly help. ----------------- From ground to jump I check the 3 of 3s a few times and get a pin check. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Been jumping a saber2 as well. For me it has a consistant off heading opening, always a dive after full inflation. The thing that I wonder about is how I am getting such a prominant 90-180 dive when actuall harness input does not give near that. Have been working on deployment posistion to see if I can counteract the dive, but I was warned by an instructor at my DZ that I should 'not be worried, and ride out the opening' of the canopy, which signaled me to think that there are quite a few people that have off headings on saber2s. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. The main person that can help you decide what you should be getting is your instructors. That being said, your DZ doesn't rent any sport gear? Only student stuff? Try talking to other jumpers that might let you try differnt things that they have? WL wise most people sugest staying at/below 1:1. Other things to consider about gear is that, the smaller canopys while they may have a lower wingloading for you because you weigh less also have other preformance increasing factors such as shorter lines, and differnent planform. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. I ussualy ask one of the people sitting near me to take a look. Most of the people on the plane are more experienced than me (at 40 jumps) and I am jumping a vec3 that belongs to the DZ. Being that they are pretty damn simple to look at most people will. I myself would only feel comfortable looking at another vector because thats all that I have jumped, and the only gear that I am quite familiar with. What I have been asked is if all the flaps are closed, and if they are the people take that as an indicator that thier gear is in good shap. Being the case that they looked at it before getting on the plane, and if the flaps haven't came open there isn't much that could have happend to the pin. Does that mean I am going to stop getting a pin check and follow that mentality, I don't know. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Glad to hear that you are having a good time, and that you have a good group of people teaching you. I can say that my JMs have been some of the coolest people, they helped me through aff, warps, and still help me now even though I have my A. Hmm, I seem to find it pretty easy... from wisconsin at 8000 feet. H'n'p from alt is nice on a clear day, can see downtown milwaukee and chicago. And to think people can't find the sears tower when they are up close ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Have jumped a 182. We have one for static line students and for people doing hopnpops. Its also nice durring the week because you dont need as many people to keep the plane going. Can get up in the air with just a friend or 2 rather than needing a lot of people to put up the king air. From time to time there is more than one 182 sitting out on the field, seems pilots like to fly to our dz rather than drive. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. How's this for faith in your Student's abilities...
Fast replied to TaeKwonDoDo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The person that taught me to pack had me learning on his canopy. I packed it up with instruction, and he just hung it up, jumped it later worked fine. I asked him, and he replied with "Always have the reserve." That and he watched me pack it Jumped quite a few of my own pack jobs now, and its easy to see based on how hard canopys go in the bag that as long as you pack with no walk thrus, out of place lines, etc (as stated above) its gonna open and work. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. I try to balance my meals, which does include one form of meat or another. One of the things that I want to point out when people talk about vegitarians feeling more healthy than meat eating people is the fact that most vegitarians watch what they are eating much better, to make sure they are getting all the nutrients they miss from meat, and just in general. I think that regardless of what your eating if you balance what you need in a day nutritionally and don't over do on one thing, and skip something else you can be generally healthy meat or not. i personally just like the taste. As for the hormone injected everything, and what not... I guess I chalk it up to a hazzard of living in todays society. Some day down the road a few generations from today people might realize that there are problems with a lot of the things that we do today, but that can be said about anything. We used asbestos till we knew it could/would cause cancer, then we quit. We use all kinds of stuff to make animals/crops/whatever grow better and stay alive longer, some day we will know what were doing wrong and fix it, or die off as a species. Same thing with the differnt food dyes that are banned because of health risks, etc. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. I'm burnt out at the end of the day. I think there have been a thread or two about this, and one thing that comes up is adrenaline burnout or whatever you want to call it. You get the adrenaline rush, and that burns out a lot of the energy for the day. One of the other things that I find personally is that when at the DZ I don't eat as much as when I'm hanging out at home, or with friends. Add that to the up and down factors and sure, I'd say skydiving can make you tierd as hell.

Oh yeah, one thing that I wanted to mention, that apears in almost all the threads asking for new rig advice, advice about deals, and things like that. make sure you talk to your AFF/IAD/SL/whatever instructor at your DZ about what your planing to get because they often know the best deals in the area as well as how well your flying under canopy and can help you select the right deal/gear based on that as well. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. My personal opinion is that, I'm not afraid to jump without one. I trust myself to pull the appropriate handles. However, there are always other things that can happen, get knocked out etc. That said I don't see a good reason not to have one. Its one extra saftey device that can help you stay alive. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. When I was young I had falling dreams every now and then, which were quite unpleasant. However, when I started skydiving, most of the bad falling dreams became things that I could control, and I gained control over my flying dreams too. Its a real blast. Every now and then I have the sensation of decent through landscape durring a dream, but its slow, probally my brain processing a canopy ride ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me.
