You can't bring your slider down over them, if you are not concerned about that then there is nothing wrong with big risers. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

I've heard more than one person say that you should definately carry a hook knife because it will give you something to play with and take your mind off the fact you are about to either spend a lot of time in the hospital or die. Oh yeah, and theres a very odd chance it may save your life. So why not? As for recognizing a main line over and cutting it and landing w/ rear risers at 61 jumps? I think if the situation arose, out would come your handles. I cut away line twists on a Sabre 190 at 2,500 ft at 88 jumps. Something I now feel pretty stupid about and no way would do again, but it seemed like a good idea when I looked up and though it would take a year to kick out of what seemed like 100 line twists (It was a very very hard opening too and the slider was caught in the middle of the twists so may brain told me that something wasn't right). Even though I wouldn't do that now, I have no regrets about making that decision w/ sub 100 jumps. It was a very quick no brainer at the time. No way I had the wits about me to start hacking away w/ a hook knife. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Exactly.. that is a perfect analogy. Think of this analogy when you watch good canopy pilots land and canopy pilots that land just well enough to not hurt themselves. You will find the latter are inconsistent and unpredictable, and look like they are going to hurt themselves right up untill they miraculously pull off another one. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

When is the right time to start sit flying???

No I just read it wrong. I thought there was a grammatical error, but upon further inspection it seems that a parachute rigger may jump any parachute regardless of who packed it and regardless of whether or not the pack job was supervised, as long as it was packed within the last 120 days. Seemed odd, thats all. I do understand the rules as they were clearly explained to me when I became a packer by my supervising rigger. I am directly supervised at my workplace, which means that there is a supervisor on the floor at all times, and at any time my work may be scrutinized by such a person. It does not mean that the supervisor has to watch every step of my work at all times during every shift. It just means that due diligence has been followed to ensure that the work is being done properly. Edited to say: It should say "by a certified rigger" not "of a certified rigger" Edited again to say: It was just a friendly jab at the typing.... "certification parachute rigger???" -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

C.S.P.A can make rules for C.S.P.A dropzones only, not all dropzones in Canada are singularily C.S.P.A affiliated, therefore will not be affected. What about a dropzone that has both C.S.P.A and U.S.P.A group memberships? Can a U.S.P.A licensed jumper jump at such a DZ without an AAD but a C.S.P.A licensed jumper not? -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

When is the right time to start sit flying???

If you are going to sit fly, your rig should have decent riser protection (velcro is ok if it is well kept and will keep closed), stiff pin protector flaps that will keep closed (I'm sure mods can be done most if not all rigs to help this), superior bridle protection and a tight BOC pouch (also can be rigged on most older style rigs). I have had a premature opening in sit fly by cause of worn out spandex on the BOC pouch, it sucked! I also know someone who had the same thing happen, but had the bridle wrap around her arm which also sucked. Above all though, you need to know that your shit is going to stay in the container at high speeds while people may be above you (shouldn't be but may be) and also during hard docks which will happen as well. My .02, but I am new.... talk to a rigger. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -

Some newbie questions on wingloading
packerboy replied to Orange1's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You have to worry about landing crosswind or downwind on every jump because it will happen. Just last week I landed crosswind in someones front yard because of a bad spot. You are not going to get up one day and decide to hook up your lighter loaded crosswind canopy to do some crosswind landings. I would not be comfortable landing a 2:1 Velocity even on a straight into wind approach. Everybody has different skills, but thinking that you are OK because you are a natural is not the right thing to do. At 30-40 some odd jumps, you are right noone has seen you fly, because most likely you have entered into many situations where you have had to use survival skills to get out of. Neither have I at close to 400 jumps. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -
I think I have seen every video on www.skydivingmovies.com (all the ones I want to). Where else is there lots of downloadable stuff like swoops and mals and whatnot? -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Depending on the person and their history with drugs.. weed can show the same symptons as coke or LSD such as paranoia, sweating, nervousness... highly unlikely to get in an airplane if this is happening to them. Different weed has different effects as well. B.C. weed will kick the shit out of you Americans! -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Some newbie questions on wingloading
packerboy replied to Orange1's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I load my canopy at 1:1 almost exactly with gear on. If I throw on some weights for a RW jump (6lbs usually), there is a slightly noticable difference while landing on a no wind day (or downwind on a light wind day ). Other than that, no noticable difference. If your interested, talk to your instructors about borrowing someones canopy for a jump or two to find out. Be carefull out there though. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -
To clarify, I am not thinking about purchasing either one. I just wanted some clarification on the myth of the Spinetto. I doubt that there is any HP canopy out there that isn't conducive to radical spinning malfunctions. If I was to buy now, I would buy a Katana. That being said, I am still having tonnes of fun playing w/ a Sabre. I am at least a year and 300 jumps away from a canopy performance change. I have demoed a Katana though and the openings where like chucking a beautifull cloud off your back. To those thinking of downsizing and canopy performance changing - it's amazing what you can do with a lightly loaded square parachute with a little coaching. Try it. I get some pretty awesome swoops off a 1:1 loaded Sabre 150. I get hosed on windy days, but I can live with that. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Canopy Piloting School reflections
packerboy replied to HydroGuy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I have a Scott Miller course coming up next month... Can't wait!! It's cool that we can get him to a small Canadian DZ. Anyone have input on the difference between doing the 2 day course vs. only 1 day. I have signed up and paid for the 2 day and will attend both, but I was wondering about the usefullness of the 2nd day for new jumpers. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -
Alot of labels I have seen on not so new canopies are illegible.. 200 jumps though.. makes you wonder what kind of stress you are putting on the canopy. Do you keep it out of the sun as much as possible? -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

But alas... as always no salute for Mr. Parachute Packer. Salute the nice manifestor, the funny vidiot, the amazing tandem instructor, the quiet but hero-like pilot. They all rock. But who really cares about Mr. Parachute Packer? Really? What if the chute doesn't open? What if the chute doesn't open? We here it from all the Whuffos. But when it does..... no respectfull salute for the heroes responsible. None. sob -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

You know... I've heard the Stiletto called Spinetto blah blah blah.. In all honesty, I've seen hundreds possibly thousands of jumps on the Stilleto at my DZ resulting in one cutaway from line twists that I remember. Checking out videos from www.skydivingmovies.com a tonne of the line twists you see are on Cobalts. Better/Worse? What do you say. I didn't put it as a poll because I wanted detailed responses. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

You'll have to hide one by my trailer because we are now on opposite weekends. I had taken holidays for this past weekend.... gl with the packing... You may want to check out the video Pack like a PRO. It'll be able to help you out. I believe you can buy it in a pack with some other videos "Fly like a Pro" being one of them, don't know what else. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson
