Adrenaline Rush: The Science of Risk

What is the best place I can order this DVD from in order to most directly support the skydivers that were involved in the making of this film? I know I can order it from Blockbuster Video, but I thought maybe there was a more direct supplier that I can get it from that would give a better financial payback to those involved rather than giving all the change to the middle man. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

My first tandem... albeit an amazing experience.. left me with a sour taste in my mouth for the instructor. I knew right away what hauling cargo was, you could see it on the video, not one smile from the instructor. My next 3 tandems are the ones I want to put a shout out to. I was talking to a friend one day about how I needed to find a job (just returned from a sabbatical out west). She asked me what I liked to do. I told her that I went skydiving once and I envy the people that work there. She told me to call them up. So I e-mailed Skydive Gananoque and told them that I didn't have a job, didn't have any money, and really wanted to skydive and asked if they could give me a job doing something. I didn't expect to hear back. Not an hour later I got an e-mail from Tom McCarthy telling me to come on out on Saturday morning and he will teach me how to pack parachutes and I can learn to jump. So the shout goes out to Tom and Will McCarthy, Will being the TI that took me up for free while I was learning to pack just to keep the skydiving juice flowing enough to motivate me to keep packing untill I had enough to pay for the course. Tom being the DZO of Skydive Gan. Anyone seen Impact? I went to see it last night and the second half of the movie didn't work... I'm pretty upset as it was a one time thing. I wanted to know if there were any more cool BASE jumping or wingsuit flying. Last year Warren had filmed Jean Loic Albert's wingsuit flight down the mountain which was at least pretty friggen wild. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Shoulda told them that there were crazy assed line twists right behind your neck and the only reason it was still flying was that you were muscling the risers apart... -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

IMO if someone drops acid one night after the beer light goes on, chances are they shouldn't be jumping on the first load the next day. Unless it was a pretty early beer light, or pretty crappy acid. I honestly didn't think that acid was even really popular any more, not as much so as newer "cleaner feeling" drugs. Goes to show how naive I am as well. Just some opinions I have formed from observing people over the years.

Ahhhh.... makes sense. I thought it was a loadfull of whacked out skydivers licking the windows on the way to altitude or something... -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

TI's that do so for a living... how many jumps do you make in a week... season... year? What do you get compensated for jumps? Do you work 7 days a week? Do you do other things such as rigging to keep the jump credits going? I'm just curious as to what the real lifestyle of a pure jump ho is like... -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Packers? compensation for Tandem pack jobs vs Sport/Student rigs?
packerboy replied to foreverfree's topic in Instructors
I would much prefer to pack 1 tandem to 2 sport rigs. $10 virtual money - Tandem $5 virtual money- Student or rental or lazy instructor $5 cash for experienced lazy gear owner I'm sure that paying $10 in jump credits, as opposed to $5 for packing tandems, is helping packers who have ambitions of becoming instructors do so more quickly. This in turn is advantageous to a small dropzone in Canada which does not have an extremely large pool of rich skydivers who can pay their own way to becoming instructors. I can't say how it helps the large places though because I am not there. If I only got paid $5 for tandems, I would only be able to do about 1/2 the jumps that I do now and it would take me twice as long to become a less current instructor. Thus the practice of paying twice as much is in the long term making your DZ a safer place for your passengers to jump. If an instructor gets paid the equivalent of a jump ticket for doing a tandem, why is it such a bad thing to pay a packer who works hard all day keeping tandem rigs in the air 1/3 the amount of a jump ticket? Especially when they have about 1/20th the opportunity to indulge in said jump tickets. Perhaps 1:1 it is not twice as hard to pack a tandem, but I believe that I would be about 1/2 as sore at the end of the day if I packed 50 sport rigs as opposed to 25 tandems. Of course I am not a tall person and keeping tension on those lines for a tandem is actually work when compared to doing so for a small sport rig. If you don't think someone should be paid twice as much for packing tandems, then you should pack 10 tandems in a row and then pack a sport rig and tell me how much easier it is. Yes even when you are packing beat up EZ's into well used Vector rigs, and than packing a slick brand new ZP Katana into a D-bag the size of your nutsack and a container the size of your wallet. As for the varience $10-$15? It takes time for standard practice to become standard practice, perhaps in the long term, there will be a common payout for tandem packs. But when ticket prices rise because of elevating fuel costs, maintenance costs etc. etc... let's not forget about the packers who now have to make more in order to jump their way to instructor ratings. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -

400 Way... it's gonna happen sooner or later.

Thailand is an expensive trip from North America. It would be unfortunate if alot of capable and deserving people couldn't pony up the coin to make it there again. Side note: How many people on the World Team '04 record were on the 300 way? -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -

I have a wuffo friend that told me a friend of hers had a first jump mal/cutaway safe reserve landing in Toronto, not sure which DZ. Anyone have any info on what might have happened? To further discussion, how many out there have had reserve rides on their first jump? Bad spot + pilot 'chute in tow = ...
packerboy replied to Frenchy68's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If you hold onto your pilot chute rather than throwing it, is it not possible for your bridle to escape the folds and come underneath your arm? In the good scenario your pilot chute will still deploy behind your arm and if you are wearing short sleeves you could end up with a hell of a bridle burn on your arm. In another scenario the pilot chute could catch the wind just the right way and deploy around your arm (bridle whizzing past your armpit in front of you) This could really hurt and cause some problems w/ deployment. Am I right or wrong? I've never heard of this happening to anyone, but I'm sure it has. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson
