Where should I get my License...CDN or US
packerboy replied to flr169's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
USPA covers Canadian jumpers jumping in Canada as long as the skydive is made within USPA basic safety requirements and Transport Canada regulations. There are quite a few dropzones in Canada that are USPA group members and not CSPA. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -
Skytronic FX in different Body Positions....
packerboy replied to packerboy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Having a Skytronic FX in your helmet.. does different body positions affect speed readings? If so, which body positions would they be? Head down? Head up? -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -
One thing we all have in common here is that we all get in airplanes all the time. Maybe we should dedicate a forum to aircraft or piloting related talk. I know that there is enough pilots on this site to keep it going. And it would be a good place for pilots to answer jumpers questions about the airplanes. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

In a horizontal wind tunnel the air is coolest at the point of it's maximum velocity.. not sure about vertical wind tunnels however. As slight as it may seem, I believe that gravitational forces have an effect on Bournoulli's equation in this configuration, MESSING EVERYTHING UP, and causing a whole lot of fun. I could be wrong though... it's been a while. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Stupid for you to chase tandems? Or stupid for the TI to let you? At our dropzone, you MUST be a tandem instructor before following tandems even without a camera. For the most part we require 1000+ jumps to be a TI. Unfortunately for me, that means packing for a few more seasons.... -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

What is the best pack medthod for a huge canopy
packerboy replied to cvfd1399's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I agree with Aggie... I'm not a big guy... 5'9" and I have no problem packing EZ's over the shoulder. I started in the sport as a packer (ended up packing my own tandem jumps) and my rigger first taught me how to flat pack. You learn a little more about the shape and design of the canopy flatpacking, and how the lines and material are configurated, which will help you not pack malfunctions when you pro-pack. Congratulations for sure on passing your level 4. I'm not trying to take anything away from that, but should the dropzone really allow a student jumper still on instruction to jump with a "visiting coach"? I guess this person must have been well known at the dropzone. Was your instructor present on this coach jump as well? -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Straight to freeflying....
packerboy replied to RoysPlayThing's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I think that as long as you have freefly compatible gear, and you learn and comply with the safety implications of freefly implicitaly (corking, group seperation, drifting on the line of flight), why the heck not? Just learn how to learn safely, but I guess that is alot easier from a Cessna than a Caravan. So I guess it would depend alot on how many people are in the sky with you.... -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -

Ontario, Quebec, and NY State jumpers. (none exclusively)
packerboy replied to packerboy's topic in Events & Places to Jump
I think that was being considered... at least one of the full weeks.. I don't know which one, but I don't think it is happening due to the lack of being able to fill the plane during the week. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -

Things I've learned skydiving that have nothing to do with parachuting
packerboy replied to jahk's topic in The Bonfire
The proper response to someone being on fire at the dropzone is "RUN IT OUT.... THE WIND WILL PUT IT OUT!!!!" Late night at the dropzone... don't bring out the fencing foils! You can't ride a bike through a well used fire pit... you just can't.. you think you can... but you can't... Landing on the hangar floor on their head from 4 or 5ft in the air will make someone do a really funky chicken. It's hard to convince the DZO that the last tandem of the day is wet and it needs to be hung untill the morning when it's not raining. Local farmers don't like picking up bowling balls with their expensive farming equipment. The functionality of a motorcycle helmet is kind of weird. A bowling ball in said helmet tossed from an airplane will incurr more damage than the helmet itself. It's hard to spot for a G.I. Joe under a .26 sq ft parachute. crab apples can hurt... pay attention! elastics can hurt... pay attention! big steaks + beer at night + altitude in the morning =something really nasty brewing. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -

We will have a Twin Otter at Skydive Gananoque on Victoria Day weekend, Canada Day weekend, and Labour day weekend. I personally would like to see: Some CRW (more than 4 ways). Some flocks of birdmen (I know some of you frenchies have got the suits).. so bring 'em out eh? Lot's of tandems (I need to pay off some early season jumps ). Also some bigger than 3 Cessna ways. What else.... hmmm... Hey Chris, think you can toe hang an otter? Just come out for some wicked skydiving and some kickass bonfires at a kickass DZ. P.S. If we get enough people, maybe we can VETO Tom's packing music! Just kidding Tom... errr maybe... -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -
I had a premature in a sit at 8,000' last year, turns out that the BOC had lost alot of its elasticity and that the pilot chute being used was smaller than the pilot chute that had previously been used in the same rig. Kicked my ass, then I packed a few tandems and I was out of comission the next day. I believe that before you freefly you should make sure that: A: the pilot chute is nice and tight in the BOC. B: there is very little (if any) bridle exposure between the main closing flap and the BOC. -- a rigger may be able to cook something up for you here. C: Your riser cover flaps and pin cover flaps are nice and tight. Someone with more experience please confirm or deny my opinion. I only have 150'ish jumps (most freefly ahemmm attempts). But I have seen alot of gear and what can happen to loose stuff in freefall. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

CSPA Student training at DZ's under scrutiney?
packerboy replied to flyinchicken's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I have to agree with skypuppy, it sounds totally personal. Whatever Bill's reasons are for not being an "active" jumper now, should not have any bearing whatsoever on his knowledge of the sport or how it has evolved, just because he doesn't fling himself from airplanes anymore doesn't make him blind or deaf. Taking demo's from real skydivers.... come on, you don't even want to post all of your information on a website of "peers", and you want to be king of PR for the sport all of a sudden? Have you really done 9500 jumps? Where? I may be mistaken, but not alot of Canadian jumpers have those kind of numbers, and this is a "Canadian issue of sorts" -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -
I want to rip a DVD for a clip to post on skydivingmovies.com (I have permission from the author, and he will most likely be reading this ) Any suggestions for friendliest software for doing this? I have played with some and had relative success from some (unfortunately freeware that inserts a pay for me frame every 30 seconds or so) -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

How long has your dz been around?
packerboy replied to diverds's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Skydive Gananoque - est. 1971 - first home of IAD (no longer used) - first Canadian home of PFF and Tandems. We have a Canso in our hangar, unfortunately it doesn't fly well enough to jump (doesn't fly at all). Wouldn't that be something though? -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -

What should packers take upon themselves?
packerboy replied to Blahr's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The subject of your thread asks a question. What should packers take upon themselves? I believe that it is a packers job to somewhat inspect the rig while they are packing it. They may not be riggers, but unless you are packing for yourself, or having a rigger look at your rig after every jump, you are essentialy placing your life saving gear in the hands of the packer, and that is better than noone looking out for your safety. I think that packers should: A: Pack the main (all the while performing a visual safety inspection of sorts) B: Change the rubber bands if necessary C: Change the closing loop if necessary D: Inform the customer of anything at all that they come across questioning the safety of the jumper, not only on subsequent jumps, but previous ones as well. If the packer thought that the closing loop was too long, not only should they tell the customer that they made the change, they should feel obligated to tell the customer "Hey, you know.. I think that your closing loop was too long, that can cause some serious issues." Obviously if the packer thought that the closing loop was too long, than they must assume that perhaps the jump that was just made was not done as safely as possible and that should be a concern of everyone at the dropzone... making sure that every jump is done as safely as possible and learning from the past to improve the future. I think that the packer was right to change the closing loop, but wrong to not tell you. You're right, if they had told you, they would have learned something about that rig that is not common knowledge to everyone. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -
That would have been a good time to do your chuteless jump. If you dropped the rig, they would have time to radio down and send another rig up in another plane... lol -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson
