Contacts or glasses to jump?
packerboy replied to virginflyer3's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
One of the moderators here had his cornea tear from the scar from his Lasik... He had Lasik done a long time ago, perhaps it's better now.. but healing is healing I can't see how it would be much different. I had PRK surgery about 2 weeks ago... I am seeing 20/15 now in both eyes, but the light still bothers me alot. No scars though since they don't make an incision. Each surgery has different pros and cons for each patient though. I was going for Lasik, but didn't qualify for different medical reasons. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -
Take my experience for what it is... very little, but here is what I know: When you start getting into canopies smaller than 135 or 120, they are of themselves higher performance regardless of wingloading. A 210lb jumper with a 1:1 wingloading on a 210sq ft canopy is going to experience something a lot more docile than a 107lb jumper under a 107sq ft canopy. My experience does however include a bunch of jumps under a Sabre 135 at close to 1:1 (a little higher but not much). I think if you are finding your canopy flight under such a canopy at 1:1 too long, than you are being a little impatient. Do more jumps, complete Billvons list and go smaller... but for now just enjoy what you have, you have a lot to learn, and if you do it right, you have lots of time to learn it. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Our DZO stops by Tim Hortons on the way to the DZ every morning and buys coffee for all the staff. What a benefit! -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Anyone know if there is any skydiving on San Andres Island Colombia? I see a brief mention of it on one of the tourist websites... but haven't been able to find anything. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Do you tell your employer that you do skydiving?
packerboy replied to bastichu's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It should be very hard for any employer to fire any employee based on what they do on their own time unless it is specifically written into a contract. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -
Yeah... I'm wondering if they'll mod non RWS risers for the RSL ring, or I'll have to buy new ones. Also, I believe I have to get a new reserve handle with the loop instead of a pin. I am actually sending my rig w/ someone so I don't have to ship it and I am including everything. Their payment for taking it there for me is that they have a second rig to jumpe when they are down there. Anyone know what RWS charges for a reserve pack job? -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

I think Stillettos pack a bit smaller than Sabres, but not much. It'll still fit for sure. Put another 500 pack jobs on the canopy and: You will be better at packing The canopy will be easier to pack You might be ready for a 135 by then -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Some Sabres just do that and you have to live with it or get a new canopy. We have a Sabre that we have tried every known technique to slow down openings and it still kicks peoples ass. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

I am sending my rig to RW to get modded for a skyhook. Before I ask, I fully intend to talk to someone there about everything, but in the meantime..... What can I expect to be done/sold to me? I know they need to install an aux flap on my ??reserve container?? I have a non RSL fitted rig w/ homemade risers, what about RSL rings and new handles, freebag, bridle etc. etc.? -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Well I ended up getting the PRK surgery because apparantly my cornea was too thin. 1 1/2 weeks later I am just shy of 20/20 in both eyes. They tell me it will be 6-8 weeks before I am satisfied with my eyesight. Any PRK patients out there got testimonials to share? -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

I agree... I don't BASE but I think a PCA or handheld BASE wins. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Personally, based on the amount of altitude I needed on my first skydive to find my own pilot chute without the guiding hand of my freefall instructor I would think more than 1 in 10 wouldn't be able to find a pilot chute and get it out in 4 seconds. I think more like 6 in 10 would pound in. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

I read the question wrong.. sorry. Rob's right... pumping the breaks before going into a landing flare is probably something someone is doing because they just turned low and scared the shit out of themselves, or they are flaring to high and then letting up and flaring again. How experienced do you mean by experienced? TI's sometimes flare and then let up to give the canopy a bit of a forward surge for landing. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

What is your field of work?
packerboy replied to Superman32's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Industrial Control Systems Technichian. I break shit, and then go looking for IT people and maintenance guys to fix it. If I can't break it, I command someone else to break it for me. Then there is the odd time that the shit actually won't break. That's when I sleep. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -
To take advantage of the last bit of lift left in the canopy flight in order to slow forward momentum. It's called finishing your flare. As you land faster and faster you will find that you can't run as fast as your canopy flies sometimes. The longer you keep the canopy flying above the ground, the more groundspeed you will lose. If you flare correctly though you should be able to finish the flare as smoothly as you enter it, eliminating the need to "stab" the toggles. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Wow... It comes with a trampoline too... no need to open. Just make sure accuracy is bang on. Save $ on packing fees. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

2 weeks?? I would look into that a little more. I think that's crazy. They are peeling off a flap from the top of your eye and relying on your own healing process to "glue" it back on. For some people 2 weeks "might" be OK, but I wouldn't chance it. I have seen clothing get torn apart at freefall speeds. Imagine what it can do to a unhealed piece of gooey cornea flap. BTW my girlfriend just gave me LASIK surgery for Christmas, I go on the 28th. I can't wait.. unfortunately I have another 4 months to wait for skydiving anyway. Gonna go snowboarding after a week though. Depending of course. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Anyone want to help run my life?

Why? 500 jumps in a year sound like too much? It's been done in one day. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson
