Have you ever cut away for an unstowed toggle?
packerboy replied to cbain's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Well that's better than flying it to the ground and then flaring with the front risers... I've seen a broken back happen because of this. Consequently, we have sewn shut all the dive loops on all student and rental gear. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -

Try explaining skydiving to your Hematologist when you are a hemophiliac. They are especially easy to convince. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

There is a pretty good video kicking around of Scott Miller doing an entire swoop course on a 230 something... A couple downwind crashes on a 150 humbled me about my abilities to land fast. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

A DZ with no overhead costs to offer free jumps, a maintenance free solar powered super Herc, work for free packers who also buy beer for all the jumpers at the end of the day, all major equipment manufacturer sponsor reps handing out any kind of gear you want, world class coaches paying it forward.... oh yeah and one of those swoop trainer thingys I saw in Skydive magazine a while ago. And don't forget those rocket shoe things that Swedish birdman guy has. And all the PST guys full time to do crazy shit in front of the hanger to amuse you when you're on the ground. And a 50" plasma screen in the plane to watch your previous jump on the way to altitude for your next. The possibilities are endless.... -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

While discussion about parachute malfunctions was a little "off", I found everything else about skydiving on wisegeek.com to be pretty bang on. They had to have been talking to an experienced skydiver to get alot of that information, which leads me to believe that it was their skydiver source who slipped in the bit about the streamers for a little amusement amongst the known. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Canadian 80-Way: June 22-25, 2006 - Registration
packerboy replied to mdrejhon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You could talk to one of the guys at the DZ who have been on 300+ ways. Or even a few others who have been to the Canadian record attempts and been on 100+ ways. You'd be surprised of the bigway exp at the DZ -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -

Wow. A Canadian from Vancouver complaining about winter weather. It's like living in Aruba compared to the rest of Canada in the winter -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -

I am buying a Rebel XT for someone for X-mas. It comes with a 18-55, but has the option of getting a 75-300 also included with a case and battery for $300 extra CDN$. I am not a photographer at all. Is 75-300 lens worth spending the extra $300? Is it something that is usefull in skydiving? My photography mentor "Fuzzy" is on vacation at CSS, otherwise I would ask him. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Yeah I realized that after I posted but was too lazy to edit. No paramedics in the fire either. You gotta admit though, they are handy to have around. I am lucky enough to be able to keep one with me at all times. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

I can think of a good recipe. Few gallons of high octane fuel about 20 or so pallets 1 oily rag 1 campfire pit 1 match 1 case of beer 1 unicycle 1 paramedic mix all ingredients and enjoy -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Intentional Cutaway Desired - Raven Micro 150 Concerns
packerboy replied to mdrejhon's topic in Safety and Training
Mark: If there is a tersh set up at the DZ, I will more than likely be doing an intentional on my Micro-Raven 150 next weekend, so you will be able to see one in action. I'm a little lighter (150 with gear on), so it may not answer your concerns with as much detail as you're looking for. Whether it is a packed problem or deployment problem or a got bumped in the plane problem, it's still a problem. A floating PUD is still a problem I would rather have. Question: Container is open, PC is packed uncocked. What's going to happen most of the time? If you pull the D-bag out by hand, is there enough drag to get the canopy out? -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

I like where the legstraps are on the Mirage. Is there a bungee mod I wonder? -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

There is the option as well of having a Dytter in your helmet and something on your wrist with the log book. I like the Neptune on my wrist. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Throw out to pull out. I like the idea of opening the container myself and also not having the PC and bridle outside of the container. I have had a premie in a head up position before and it sucked. I know this is a non issue with good bridle protection and a tight spandex, but I like the idea of everything being in the container untill I decide different. I also would prefer a floating PUD to a PC in tow any day. Although not caused by the same reason, I would give the likelyhood of either occuring about the same chance. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

I'm thinking of going PUD. I have my own reasons in my mind and I'm looking for validation. What are the advantages and disadvantages as seen by the masterdebaters here? -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Student, DZ eats it to keep the person in the sport. (there are other reasons, but this should be a financial motivation for the DZ). Renter, renter pays. C'mon now... sorry 'bout the car Mr. Hertz, but I lost it. I personally think it is ridiculous to think that the DZ should eat the cost of gear that is rented and not returned. It's grey when the DZ packer packs something nasty, but not all malfunctions are the fault of the packer either. Thats the risks you take when you rent. It may not be your fault, but it's not your fault if someone hits your rental car in the parking lot either. Perhaps DZ's should rent gear with or without insurance for such things. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

I own a Barigo and have checked it against other altimeters in the plane w/ me. 0 seems to be about 13,500ft. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

In my limited experience opinion, I would suggest double fronts first. Then 45's, 90's, 180's and so on. And when first attempting 180's etc. you should be planing out with enough altitude to maybe even need a little double fronts to keep the speed induced by your turn up for your landing. Then bring it a little lower very slowly untill you have it mastered. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson
