The "45 degree rule" for exit separation DOES NOT WORK
firstime replied to kallend's topic in Safety and Training
I have read the responses and yet to hear your solution as to WHAT the general rule of thumb should be. I have used both time and visuals dependent on winds on jump run. This type of thread gets so out of hand and way off the subject that no one knows what the hell to think. I have never taken a protractor with me to use @ jump run. There are two many varibles to say "get out @ 45d" I think it's just a good point in a perfect world. Alot of the ppl out there (dropzone.com) have alot of talent but I am starting to think that maybe I have drifted into a defense attorneys forum. PS: do you think an RSL is a good choice? -
it's always good to try something a little different. But I guess you have a point to a degree. Belly flying is the basics. I would think that if one does different types of jumps other than belly it would give you a different perspective on body flight. I will do any type of jump because I can go to my belly, slow my decent at pull time. But some might argue that get real good at one discipline prior to going to the next. I think your question is similiar to the RSL question.

We go to Eloy the last weekend in Feb or the first weekend in March. The mornings are a little chilly but by 10am it's warmed up a bit. Great place to jump for us in the off season, you can bunk, eat and drink right at the DZ and not have to drive.

How much do winds really push you in freefall

***its not meant to be exact. I don't get out with GPS on my chest strap. My post was in fact a general estimate on the spot. Did my post indicate something different???? -

the way I was taught was 1) wind direction from 13K to 3K in 4 incredments and divide it by 4 eg: 13k 180, 9k 160, 6k 160 and 3k 180. now average direction would be 170. now use the wind speed in the same equation. Wind speed @ 13k is 20 mph, 9k is 20mph, 6k is 20 mph and and 3k is 10mph. If my math is correct, you will drift approx 1/3 of a mile during your 60 second freefall at 170 degrees. Please correct me if I am wrong -
WHOA, the same thing happened to one of the jumpers at our dz a couple of weeks ago........ Mis routed bridle... and this guy is real anal about safety. Thank God his reserve ride went well. Don't ever think you are not capable of a brain fart

Give it week bro, I didnt listen to the Doc and my speedbag swelled the size of a grapefruit (didnt think that was possible). When I called him with my dilemma he laughed and said enjoy the pain. Then he could'nt contain himself while telling me to pack it in ice..F%^&ing smartass

stop beating yourself up. Different folks different strokes. It's not uncommon to fail a jump or two or even three. You stuck to it and made it better. I have seen ppl go thru AFF without failing one jump, and thats not the norm. Some ppl have exit problems and others don't, some ppl have landing problems & others don't. Just hang in there and listen, listen and observe. We are all different in every aspect. You might be better than others in some other tasks.... Why??? Who knows!!!! Hang in there bro because being inquisitive is a good thing.

The property that is home to SDLI is situated on is the Calverton EPCAL site formerly known as the Grumman Naval Weapons Research Center. However there is much talk at the town board of Riverhed(the township which Calverton residec), and quite frankly I am not happy with the rumblings. Our lease was (this year) extended 7 years. loose lips sink big ships!!!

***At that point an airplane should be dispatched to check the full wind line, and then to search off the wind line. The DZ should also dispatch a few people in cars to check obvious open fields and roadways where the jumper might have landed. I have to agree with you Tom, because it happened to me at the Ranch, and both otters flew over me, the second pass Julie flapped her wings to indicate to me that she spotted my locale hence DZ personel came to pick me up all within ten minutes.

are you the guy who trashed SDLI???
