Your nicest aircraft to (solo) exit from?
firstime replied to Erroll's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
the last one out of a skyvan, like a cliff diver in the full spread position from a running start while screaming yesssss indeeeedy!!!! -
Hi All, Had an interesting jump last week that got me thinking about an RSL and hook knife. I pitched at the norm and just when the pilot was 2' out, I flipped on my back. Well my thoughts were.. dont chop if yo have lines wrapped. If I do and dont release the RSL I am in trouble. 2ND thought (this in all in a matter of 3 or4 seconds) if I am tangled in a line or two, do I chop and then cut what is still there or do you cut the lines w/the hook knife then cut away. I can see pros and cons in each scenario (wish I never do). But I can say one thing is that I have my thoughts about an RSL. It will save you in a brain fart or kill you in a panic???

Almost Cutaway on Level 5
firstime replied to bluewaterstream's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Good job, Yes line twists suck, but don't take them with little concern. I have had 3, 1 bad one and 2 so so.I only have 53 jumps. All 3 lines twists had to do with body position upon deployment. i have learned a valuable lesson. I took the advice a little too lightly regarding "left hand above the head" while reaching for the hackey. Get belly to earth. This might sound a little off key but I have been fortunate to have a few skydives that scared the shit out of me.One was totally unstable from 13500 to 8000 (my first solo). Then while under canopy(again 1st solo) the radio guy on the ground forgot I was there.and I landed off(way off) but I made a decision early and landed in a field safely. That is just one, the other was in a guy's backyard and the third was a sod farm(real soft). I am boasting about the training that I have rec'd.Most new skydiviers have not had the mishaps w/ 53 jumps that I have . My last 3 months have given me a tremendous amount of respect for this sport.. Be well be safe and if you have to chop it what DA FU%& be well -
Rolling the tail on a BRAND new canopy
firstime replied to CrazyIvan's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I also have a brand new slippery sabre, I am also very new in this sport. I bought the pro pack video and started packing in my apartment. Put the dog in the bedroom and here we go. Well after about 40 minutes of sweat and cursing I decided to get up gently and get a beer, What I dont understand is why it takes so much time to get the air out and quickly that shit (air) comes back in. I wanted to cut it up with a pair scissors. I am now convinced that it's linked to "why do I do this". You will be laughing at yourself in no time. Enjoy -
you are 100% right with that reply, and comes with numbers, you have the words of good wisdom and thats what I enjoy in this forum. I have been told that an audible for a low time jumper is not a good thing but the majority says it's a great BACKUP.
-
Thats what I dont want, What I want is smack in forehead if I have a brain fart. I am new (53 jumps) and looking at my alti is second nature therefore the audible I want as a back up
-
Can anyone out there tell me as to the noise level in freefall in decibles, I am hard of hearing and trying to get an audible to fit my needs. Thanks HUH.What did he say??
-
Thanks Mike, I will use your method combined with a varity of info that I rec'd. I am not too old for this sport but at 46 we dont heal as well as in our 20's therefore thats why I ask alot of questions. I like being well informed and really appreciate that there is no stupid question in this sport... aahhh wait a minute..I have heard a few no brainers but you can dig what Im saying. Looking to do maybe 10 jumps this weekend wiil keep you posted. again thanks again

hey claybird, Also new to this forum and skydiving. This site is without a doubt the best advice you will get anywhere Use it well and enjoy this sport 2nd to none. Listen with safety not excitement.

Hi All, new in the sport (51 jumps). I have worked on all my weak points by listening to everyone on the dropzone I have corrected all but one. My 32nd jump I made a choice of a downwind on the tarmac or a crosswind on the grass, I chose the crosswind. Well needless to say it was a crash & burn (ego injury only). Now my legs start running 10 feet before the ground. Does anyone have a "little trick of the trade" as to a good way to judge my height prior to the flair. Its got me crazy. I have stopped looking straight down which helped a little. someone suggested velcro my feet together...hehe Any input would be great. Jumping my new sabre2 this weekend for the "gulp" 1st time. oops I mean the 2nd time

How do you avoid collisions with hook turners?
firstime replied to mirage62's topic in Safety and Training
Good words of wisdom, you said it all. -
welcome to a sport and a group of people 2nd to none. I am also new (23 jumps) and loving it. This sport will fine tune you in everyday life and it will change the way you look at everything. When I look up at the sky... I wonder could I jump this??? Just today while driving home from work, I threw my cigarette out of the window and thought "relative wind". How many times have you looked at a plane and quipped "he's crabbing" . What happened to us? Hey we are small minority standing tall against a large group with alot more thinking abilities than most. I feel a sense of confidence that the average person will never feel. So enjoy, be smart, always keep your head on a swivel and never assume. Larry

thanks for that reply, it gives me a great sense of confidence to know that the people who have hundreds of jumps didnt come out of the womb with a PD on their back. hehe just kidding> I like the fact that you all treat me the one of the gang, I will become a good skydiver because I am getting good advise from ppl who have been there and done that. Again thanx thighman

thanks for the info and the warm welcome. I will let you know how i did this weekend.

I am a new kid on the block (not a "skydiver" yet) and have had e few problems.... small line twist due to unstable deployment, landed off a couple times. Currently I am @ level 8 AFF. Once I get stable I feel like the Pepsi Goose but when I get out I feel like a "dead Chicken" and look like one too. It is the initial exit that seems to be the stumble. Is it normal after 15 jumps to still have a flock of geese in my stomach (butterflies are past tense now). All my jumps have been from an otter but now (this weekend I will be jumping a cessna 208) therefore I dont think I should be doing that leap "shoot me method" as to avoid that dent in the back of my head from the rear stabilizer. Maybe I will just sit on the floor and fall out. All kidding aside, it's always great to hear some input from the talented people in this sport. Firstime (learned that statement the hard way)
