There have been some great points made here. I believe they all have relevance. The S&TA who is strong willed could handle a problem, but I believe that there has to be a rule for that person to follow. (a separate landing area). Plus S&TA aren’t always immune to the social pressures of high time jumpers. Changing the issue to a BSR has merit, for sure. Education is always good but the last accident education was not really this issue, other than perhaps the education of arrogance. How many times have you felt bad because someone hooked in? A lot, I bet. And I totally support the right to swoop. But in fact I don’t hook and I do not see the need for myself to have to stop jumping because of the fear that someone will 270 into me. The education that I see here – and I fully believe that Danny would appreciate this – is that we as a group allow the practice to go on. We have to have a firm rule that the WHOLE skydiving community will support. Leaving it up to the Dz is certainly an option, and talking with people I find that many more dz’s have separate landing area’s than I thought – although many are not enforced strongly. As I said I dislike rules in general but I have to wonder when a dz who doesn’t have a separate landing area has an accident like this and if one of the families is not jumper friendly what will be the legal ramifications. Interesting PM was sent to me, it basically was the suggestion that specific amount of swoopers vrs traditional approaches would dictate who has the closest landing area to the “hot spot” (generally closest to packing) While I have no problem walking in this might encourage more dz’s to cater to a specific group. I want to be careful with my comments here. Bob was a very good friend of mine (as many others) Swooping is a great thing. Brain McNenney is a fellow employee and good friend (Pro swooper). There is plenty of room in our sport to accommodate everyone. It seems to me that we are “running into” to problem area’s. 1. 90% of the skydivers don’t swoop, of the 10% that do swoop a certain small percentage feel that they have the god given right to swoop within the other canopies. 2. Of that smaller group an even smaller percentage feel that they are “good enough” that they don’t have to listen to anyone. They have got away with it for years and nothing has happen, therefore nothing will. Until we as a group…all skydivers agree on a policy and then enforce it these kind of things will happen. Separate landing area’s will work IF the policy is enforced. I appreciate the posters comments about camps and big ways but having been to many camps and big ways the plan hard truth is that the rules are enforced selectively. Period. They are enforced selectively because skydiving is a social sport. When some high time, well known, well liked skydive rips a fast hook turn down low with only a few canopies around, very little is done if anything. It has to be a group thing. Such an up roar IF someone swoops in that EVERYONE will be offended and demand that it be addressed. As much as I dislike rules, I believe it is time for the USPA to step in and address this issue. I don’t believe that we are policing our self’s. A small percentage is affecting the whole and it has to stop. To all the folks who did the POP's jumps. First sorry we didn't get the record. FYI on the last jump Saturday we had two or three people out of thirty so it wasn't like we wouldn't have gotten it. When I had the brain fart of an idea to get the folks together to do this I had no idea how many people I would offend. And if you know me you know that I understand I can offend people. Group I "Don't let him/her on they suck. Group II "I want to be on it but only for the record jump and only one jump and only if you come get me" Group III "I've done a 20 way before and I don't understand why I have to jump with the organizers" Soo if you fall it to one of these groups, I sincerely do apologize that I upset you or if I was being an "asshole on dropzone.com" For the most part I was trying to help Spence out and have a good time, it sure ended bad though. POPS RECORD INFO We don't need no stinkin Skyvan to do the record anyway. Here's the offical plan, it's sooo offical that it's subject to change at any moment. I've designed and slotted a 22 way w/video out of an otter, people who have been jumping with the organizers will be looked at first for these slots. That jump should go off around 3:00 Saturday. There are a few people and I have no problem with who have indicated that they do not plan on jumping much with the organizers - they want to do smaller groups, free fly, four ways scrambles. These folks will be slotted on the next jump as possible. where possible. If you have a limited number of jumps and experience please come and jump with the group if you really want to get on the first attempt. If you look over the list you can see a lot of people with a lot of experience. Spence has been very, very accomendating with the planes, but to be fair if the weather is good and all the people show up I think we can expect one MAYBE two form loads. I'm hoping we can con Spence into a sunset form load for Saturday. (Otter, Caravan) If everybody plays well we should be able with this group to get the record and then beat the record with a formation load
