  1. I don't really know how to respond to you more fully then I have. We're going to have to agree to disagree, I've answered your question but either you don't understand or I haven't explained it to you enough... 3. Intuition - the direct knowing or learning of something without the conscious use of reasoning. Focus - any center of activity, attention It is possible for something to respond in a way that you expect, even without conscious thought. This does not negate the need for attention to detail in the broader task. Take shooting a gun for example. No conscious thought is required for the firearm itself, provided it behaves in a fashion one expects it to. Focus on the target is absolutely required if one wishes to hit it. The same is true in this case; my limited experience so far has shown me that a given input on a control results in a reaction, which I expected. This does not remove any need for focus on the many variables that come into play throughout the landing. 4. I worked for a time on EMS bird's so I hear and understand DA. I plan on putting lot's of skydives on my rig before summer for just that reason (also cause I want to do lots of skydives between now and summer
  5. No I really don't plan on going anywhere else for awhile. Lodi's landing area is much smaller (I've never been there but that's what I hear) and Tahoe is too high for me right now. From time to time they fly the caravan to Byron when it's too windy in Davis and I would go with the crew there (I hear their landing area is even bigger then Skydance's at the same aprox. altitude). Your advice is the same as my instructors, stay home for a few hundred jumps. Advice I'm taking. Thanks! 6. Thankyou for the advice, this is my plan. Canopy flight is, for right now, the aspect of skydiving that I am the most interested in and am seeking (and think I've found) a coach. I was refered by my instructors (hell they will always be my instructors) but after talking with the guy for 5 minutes I realized how little I know about anything to do with canopy flight. I do feel I can get my canopy on the ground without breaking anything but this is far from mastery. Thanks again! 7. I see what your saying and no I haven't mastered ANY canopy. This is more of a question of where I'm starting then anything else. I'm NOT stupid enough to believe I have the experience to make an informed decision about where I should be right now. I have to rely on those with that experience that I'm learning from. And yes...it's A LOT of fun to fly, and requires an enormous amout of focus below 1000' feet, for me. It's also a lot easier to land then any other canopy I've been on and behaves in a more intuitive manner. Edited to add NOT...Fruedian? 8. My plan is to put about 300 jumps on this canopy then reevaluate. I can see that someday I'll want more but I've got some time before I get ALL out of this canopy. That's absolutely right. It wasn't a matter of 'I need to downsize' more of what am I going to be jumping for the next 300 jumps? I jumped a 190 and a 170 got with my instructors and I made the decision. 11 months...most though since I got my gear probably November. 9. Yes, I think it was. You didn't name me but you directed everyone where to find me. I don't mind...I think it's funny. I would have appreciated some direct questioning but, whatever works for you is fine with me. I hope your friend is OK too and send her my best! 10. Damn and I was waiting for him. A little side note here, is this how it's done here? Scott didn't like my W/L so he started a thread on it. Why couldn't he ask me about it in the thread I started or PM me...oh well I am jumping a Saber 2 170 loaded at 1.32. I have 16 jumps on it. 12 jumps on Saber 2 190 11 jumps on Saber 2 210 13 jumps on 260-229 2 tamdems Yes and no. I get ongoing training one on one jumping with instructors at the DZ specific to canopy control. Have I taken a class like Scott Millers? No. I've been corresponding with him, looking for when he's coming to the west coast (April by the way) but after reading a repost of one of his Emails on this forum I'd be surprised if he took me into his class. Yes I can turn 90 at 50 feet (both your method, and the one I was taught in AFF) Yes I can flare turn 45 degrees I can hit a 10 meter circle...sometimes. I tend to land where I think I'm gonna land by this is not 100%. We have a lot of open space where I jump with very large fields to land in (It's a farming area). I just started practicing front riser approaches, at your suggestion actually. I ran the idea by the GM and ST&A at my drop zone and they felt it would be OK for me to do. I have not initiated a front riser turn except above 2000'. After speaking with those I'm learning from, i've decided to wait until I'm 100% on all other aspects of flying my canopy to add that variable. And yes I can land crosswind (I've done it up to 10 kt) No, of course not. So the question is...am I going to kill myself? I might. So might you. Am I in over my head? I may be, I'm not qualified to judge that. Who's advice should I take? I've been watching these forums for almost a year. I don't generally get involved in skydiving discussions because I don't have the experience or desire to give advice. If there is one constant, looking from the outside in, it's the lack of consensus on just about everything. Ironically W/L is one area most all seem to agree upon. I can not and will not defend my choice to jump a 170, it would be foolish of me to do so in the face of so much experience. All I will say is that those I learned from, continue to learn from tell me I'm on the right canopy for me. This is not one persons opinion but many. These are people I trust who know me. Yes I know I'm trusting them with my life, and yes I do trust them that much. Mostly I trust myself and how I react when things go wrong, I appreciate all of your advice over the last year Bill, you don't even realize how much of it I have taken. I have a copy of your downsizing checklist in my log book as well as on my desk top. This issue, however, I'm going to stick with the advice of those I jump with. All right everyone......GO! 12. Just a word of caution. You may want to check with whoever supplies your O2 to make sure it's medical grade gas (ask the delivery driver cause the office will say no). Most manufactures sell medical grade gas in their industrial grade bottles because it's cheaper then having multiple grades. If, however, it is actually industrial grade it may have impurities, like heavy metals, that you don't really want to breath. 15. I understand... where did I say that it does? I said nothing about making assumptions. Let me clarify (looking back I see where it looks like I'm saying you are making a moral judgment, this was not my intent and I apologize if it seemed so). When we make a patient contact, in fact when I deal with anyone, I start from the point of view that they are all infected. I had the unfortunate opportunity to work on my daughter in the back of an ambulance when she was 18 months old (she ended up being fine by the way). It wasn't until later that I realized that I was wearing gloves the whole time, I even changed them between procedures (It was really no fun I'll tell ya). This was my daughter, I changed her diapers on a regular basis. There is no possibility of cross contamination in either direction that hasn't already occurred. As stupid as it seems this was a reflex reaction, because I make no assumption or distinction about the possible status of ANY patient, because I treat every patient as if the have Ebola. This is a difference only in degrees from what you said, I think it's an important distinction. Precautions have nothing to do with the actual patient rather they have to do with how it is safe to operate. Why? How would I know anyway? all I said was: ***Doing a tandem is not performing surgery or tending to an open wound... but the possiblility of there being an injury to both parties and of the blood mixing is there. Is this statement incorrect? You'll note I'm not speaking strickly about HIV... at least I hope. Why should I have to find where something has happened in the past before we all decide to help prevent it happening in the futur? You are absolutely correct about the dangers. My point is that the only way to truly minimize the risk is to treat everyone like they are contagious and take appropriate measures to minimize exposure. Do you point an unloaded gun at your head? Why not? You take the appropriate precautions always so when the damn thing goes off, it's not pointed at your head. As for the significance of whether transmission has occurred in the manner described above, without this information a VALID risk assessment can't be made. I think we should explore the likelihood of the scenarios people are describing before we suggest a course of action. 23. Yeah...I do. There is an unlimited number of experts telling you what's what and damn it if they don't all say different stuff! What I've ended up doing is to take advice from only the staff at the DZ where I jump. I'm not saying I don't listen to people who are helping me along with a skill but I run it by one usually more of my instructors to confirm what I've been told. It's made all the difference with the who DZ experience. If you can find a small number of people you can trust to mentor you it can make a big difference! I don't know if this helps...but it helped me. PS. On more then one occassion I've had instructors say things like: -"Don't listen to that guy, he's giving you dangerous advice" -"She told you what?!?" It's good to have people you can trust that know your skill set. Faith in a holy cause is to a considerable extent a substitute for lost faith in ourselves. -Eric Hoffer - Check out these Videos
