  1. I'm with you...I can't see a really "good" alternative either My biggest problem with the "Projects" is while they do foster a sense of community they seem to validate certain counter-productive lifestyles. It seem's normal to be poor and uneducated when everyone you have contact with is the same way. At least with HUD housing it deversifies both sides perceptions of what is normal. Of course living across the street from some sec 8 as I do sucks! Faith in a holy cause is to a considerable extent a substitute for lost faith in ourselves. -Eric Hoffer - Check out these Videos
  2. Of course that system tends to trap people in a low income job that requires spending more time out of the house. Since most of these families are single parent that leaves...well...the local gang to look after their children which of course perpetuates the problem. This is why many local law enforcement agencies are against the work for welfare program. It marginalizes the people the least capable to defend themselves. Nothing like pointing fingers at poor people for all of our social ills while businesses profit from the cheap labor. The money we save we can now give to airlines to subsidize their poor business decisions
  3. Well hi there dropdeded! Working in a prison....hmmmm. Not a great place to work, i'll list the reasons in a min. First off, i've been a medic since 1990 all over CA. Currently working for the fire department, have worked ground and air ambuli. I love being a medic and i love working the streets. I've worked everywhere from South Central LA to Richmond, Oakland, Sacramento, and all through the north coast. I also teach both BLS and ALS disciplines. I gotta tell ya, I've respoded into Folsom Prison on both routine calls and durring riots. It's not a work environment I would choose or recommend Here is why: -Have run across several less than competent people in prison clinics. This may be due to burnout it may be due to dealing with people who hate and lie to you ALWAYS. It is a quality that many responders have noticed and commented on. Now it is not always the case but it seems more common there than in other places. -In the prison system, patient care issues are subordinate to so many other factors. while i understand the necessity of security in a prison it's not the kind of environment i would personally do well in. -Closely review the "No negotiation policy" the state penal system has. -It is good money, it does provide good bennies...when you leave work will you be happy? When you are on your way to work will you be happy? -There are alot of jobs out there for EMT's. Go to AMR's web site and take a look around. Every ER in the world is hiring EMT's as ER techs. Well that is my $0.02. If you have any questions or would like to call me names...this is where to find me! 4. Same thing here on the west coast...UCDMC did a study a couple of years back where they tag reviewed every traumatic code for the last 8 years. That was field starts only. What they found was that of ALL codes with a starting PEA of
  5. Hi there Skymedic...I agree with most you say however, most non-field ppl aren't all that good at deciding when to and when not to start CPR. I spent several years on an EMS bird as well, how many times was your pt. going south on lift and you spent the next 10 min deciding if that's PEA on your monitor or not? When in doubt I say start CPR. While it's not the best of moves in the drunk guy that DFO's off the barstool (as we have all seen) I wouldn't be all that concerned in a patient that is hemodynamically unstable to the point of apnea. I would argue that an unresponsive, cool, pale, diaphoretic, apnic patient is not going to be worsed by chest compressions. For all of you non medically trained people, get some basic training, get a plan, interface with the local responders and PRACTICE. It sounds like you all did well in a bad situation! Nice Job! Us ems people become incredulous when you tell us you got someone back with basic CPR cause we almost never see it, but it does happen! 9. HI!!!, Sorry for yelling, just wanted to say hello. I’ve made two tandem jumps and am now ready to mortgage my house and quit my job to spend more time jumping out of airplanes. Is this a normal response or am I having an issue? Seriously this is absolutely one of the coolest things I’ve done, and I’ve attempted to find the coolest things to do. I’ve been watching you all talk for the last month and just wanted to get in. Is it me or is the skydiving community generally nicer than other groups? I’m finding everyone at Skydance (Davis, CA) extra friendly as well as the folks here. Well I’ll stop talking till I’ve got something to say, just wanted to say hi and hope to play with you all someday! Peace!
