Shweezal has a box of smoke? Sounds dangerous to me. btw, was that you that started the latest fire at Byron?

Dunno about 1992, but back in 1996 a buyer had to have "600 jumps" and sign a waiver (iirc it was 2 different waivers for the sub-100 sizes).

Nobody cares how old you are when it comes to paying your beer fines. You'll have no trouble finding someone over 21 to hand your money to so they can go buy your case and put it in the dz fridge. The only possible out is if you are a recovering alcoholic. And even then you'll be expected to bring a case of something for a first, even if it's a case of water. btw, packing is an excellent way to make money. And it's legal, too.

I can't hear you without a beer in my hand.

The fact that the dealer's name hasn't been publicly posted should tell you something... like maybe the dealer doesn't want PD to find out they aren't abiding by the dealer agreement... I'm only guessing, of course.

for thoes people who know me this will blow your mind.

Good for you, Kreg! Congrats on making what had to be a hard decision. If/when we ever get to meet in person I'll buy ya a root beer or two to celebrate. -
Does your dad pay any of your bills? If he's providing any of your financial support and doesn't want you to jump, listen to him and don't jump. Especially if you are going to school and he is helping pay for it - he won't take you defying him and jumping anyway as appreciating what he's doing for you, guaranteed. Skydiving will still be there when you are supporting yourself. Your dad might not be. Don't risk lifelong animosity with family members for a sport - and skydiving is a sport that you don't even know if you are going to like yet. btw, isn't selling football pools just a little bit illegal? Might not be something you want to openly discuss on an internet forum...

For a four year old canopy that has less than 150 jumps on it? Holy crap. I guess I did good selling my five year old, 300 jump Spectre 170 for $1100. Assuming excellent condition and a Cypres value of $650 or so I wouldn't let that rig go for less than $3500; I'd probably list it at $4000/obo and see what people offer. I think the fact that it's a smaller harness and sized for larger canopies will make it an easy sale even at a higher price.

For USPA's rating you need to have a B license (100 jumps), complete a coach's course and observe/teach portions of a few FJC's.

Honest level of risk with skydiving?
skybytch replied to Philly215's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I agree. I see skydiving as a risk management activity. First accept the fact that you could do everything right and still get injured or die. Determine which of the remaining risks you feel are worth taking (an example would be learning to swoop - some feel the risks are worth the rewards, others feel that swooping adds more risk than they are willing to take). Then do everything you can to reduce the risks that you don't want to take but do have control over. I would add conservative gear selection (especially as a novice), refusing to be on the same load with people who are scary (ie the guy on a canopy that's way too fast for his ability - even if he can land it just fine, he many not be able to fly it safely in traffic, anybody who can't/won't fly a predictable landing pattern, etc) and refusing to stop learning to that list. -
You'd have to come up with $160 to continue if you had passed the level 5, wouldn't you? You might be surprised to learn how many world champion skydivers, top notch instructors and other "big name" jumpers took more than 7 jumps to get through AFF. Don't be so hard on yourself. You didn't "fail" as long as you learned something. Tunnel time is a great tool if there's one near you.

Of course I have. Fucking up can be a lot of fun. It's dealing with the consequences of our fuck ups that isn't fun. But sometimes the fun to be had fucking up is well worth the pain of dealing with the consequences of said fuck ups. Or not.

Visiting San Jose - recommendations for DZs nearby?
skybytch replied to idj's topic in Events & Places to Jump
None are easy to get to without a car. -
:2:1 A solo with a dead Neptune on Friday. An amazing sunrise balloon jump on Saturday. Beer (paid) for first balloon jump.

If you visit northern California, plan to stop by Davis, Byron and Lodi. Davis has a nice spot for tents and decent shower facilities; they fly a PAC. Byron has no running water but is well worth the visit; they fly a King Air. I don't know about the camping facilities at Lodi but it's also worth a visit while you're in the area. Lodi is your best bet for mid-week jumping as they are the only 7 day/week dz; they fly a Beech 99 and an Otter. Davis is open Weds-Sun but midweek PAC loads depend on if tandems show up or not (the 172 will fly with 2 people though). I'm not sure what days Byron is open.

If you want it bad enough and you're willing to work for it, you can find a way to make it happen. Lots of people finance their jumping by packing or otherwise working at their local dz or by getting some other part time job. If that all sounds like too much effort, well, skydiving will still be there when you're done with school and making the big bucks. Having spent the past 17 years wishing I could afford to jump as much as I'd really like to, I have to say finishing school and then learning to skydive is the smarter way to go...

The cheapest place may or may not be the best place for you to learn. You're better off learning at a dz close to where you are living - makes it much easier to find people to jump with at 26 jumps if you've been hanging out with them since your first jump. How much it will cost in jumps to go from zero to A license depends a lot on the prices where you jump (student jumps, coach jumps, solos, gear rental, etc), how many categories you have to repeat, if you buy a rig right away or rent for awhile... there are really too many variables to give you a hard and fast number. I usually tell people to expect to spend $6000 or so between jumps and gear to get to an A license. YMMV.

Tell them you fly a big boat because you want to suck every possible second of airtime out of your skydive dollar. Tell them you fly a big boat because it's more like a BASE canopy. After all, everybody knows that fixed object jumpers are hardcore; you should get major cred using that one. Look them straight in the eye and say "I don't have medical insurance." Agree with them. "Yup, you're right, if I had any balls at all I'd be flying a Katana 150. But I'm just a big wussy." Or use my favorite strategy - ignore them. Eventually they will go away.

There's a guy in that pic?

Yes. Call Ray at Action Air. 530.753.2650

A 170 at 1.24 at 34 jumps? Hopefully no manufacturer would send you a demo.

imho, you don't NEED the background of the previous books to read and enjoy this one, but there is a lot of stuff you really won't get without it. If you like to read it's well worth the time and money to get and read the whole series. Dunno if I'd have wanted my son reading the last two or three when he was a preteen though. Suggest you read them first before setting the kids loose on 'em.

HP 7 - The Spoiler's Thread (ie don't look if you don't wanna know...)
skybytch replied to skybytch's topic in The Bonfire
Seriously. If you haven't read the book yet and you don't want to know, hit your back button now. I'll throw some empty space in so you don't see something you didn't really want to... So go now... back to the Bonfire... nothing to see here... come on back when you're ready... Holy crap, what a rollercoaster that was! Non-stop action. Loved it! So what do you all think? What was your favorite plot twist? I loved that Harry was a Horcrux!! Brilliant. Best part of the book? Harry and Dumbledore in King's Cross. I would like to know who/what the whimpering naked child was though... Any complaints? My only complaint is with the ending - I think Teddy should have lived with Harry and Ginny all along. What plot twist surprised you most? That Snape was actually a good guy.
