took me 3 months to get my last jump in to qualify for my A. The weather really gets shitty here. It's not like I didnt try either - spend weekends on the trot at the DZ, still no break in the crap. Exp got to jump... but oh not me! Hang in there - you'll get your A and you'll move on to whatever you want to do.

Do a search, there's lots of info on this from past threads - prety much no one jumps a round reserve unless they have to for finacial reasons. They're cheep cos no one wants em. The starter mag in the UK specifically advises against them. They offer very little as an advantage over a square and what benefits they do offer are more than eaten up by the additional risks they carry. Get a square reserve.

Or for that matter, Absinthe? Anyone in the U.S.?
mr2mk1g replied to ErnestHemingway's topic in The Bonfire
I love the stuff. Favourite drink ever. Nice and strong at 70% proof (+ added special chemicals). I can't afford it in the UK though - its about £40 for a 50cl bottle. I get mine from Spain (last time 8EUR per bottle) so any time anyone goes to Empuria they are supposed to get me a bottle. There’s a great bar in Bristol called Ether that sells about 7 or 8 different brands of it... love the stuff and go there with friends to sample each in turn. BEST WAY TO SERVE: Take: one shot of Absinthe, one shot of water, a tea-spoon full of white sugar, a tumbler, some fire. Dip the tea-spoon of sugar into the absinthe so its soaked in it. Poor the absinthe into the tumbler. Now light the alcohol soaked sugar and allow to caramelise. Quickly drop the flaming spoon into the absinthe at the same time as the shot of water. Stir vigorously. The once vivid green absinthe will go a milky-green colour. Enjoy -
How long from fracture to rapture?
mr2mk1g replied to Spike's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
My point was that it shouldn't be the landing that worries you... its that one odd landing in a thousand where you catch a glare off a window or get a sudden gust of wind (or whatever) that you ought to be worried about. Plan for the worst, survive for the best. (wow, that actually sounds quite good... and to my knowledge... I just made it up ... it gonna be my new tag line from now on, and you were here at its inception) -
How long from fracture to rapture?
mr2mk1g replied to Spike's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I know that 99% of my landings could probably done with a full cast on one leg... but then again, I still jump a reserve even though my main opens more than 99% of the time. Air on the side of caution buddy. -
what about other rigs? How widely available is this bag?

Sounds like your using terminiology which is specific to your DZ. I've not heard they use of "execution time" before. Please elaborate or describe the event you're refering to.

Hit a snag: FAA Class 3 medical clearance
mr2mk1g replied to mailin's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Get that in writing. Write to them explaining your specific situation. If the answer is still no, fair enough, but get that in writing not just off the phone. A written answer will stimulate the most accurate response possible as it can be proved they said it. Also ask what the reason for the exclusion is. If you cant jump anywhere because of this condition and none of the ideas already highlighted to you, consider making an application to the FAA for them to consider an amendment for this specific situation. There must be periodic amendments - get a letter from your doctor stating that its ok becuase of your specific situation. As you have already asked for the reason for the exclusion, you can ask your doctor to adress their concerns. I know your probably going to get responses saying that changing FAA is a long proc and a pain, but its worth a shot. -
Every rig I've looked at looks like this on the ground including my brand new custom container that has never been jumped. That said, im not a rigger nor do I have years and years exposure to the sport. If your uncomfortable with something simply get your rigger to have a look b4 you jump it.

what about 15,000ft - thats quite a popular altitude...

Spinoff thread: pros and cons of soft links (main or reserve)
mr2mk1g replied to The111's topic in Gear and Rigging
Remember that barrel cracking and stripped threads are not equipment failures but opperator failures. If the opperator didnt screw it up wrong it wouldn't be broken. Slinks are just the same - you can screw up when putting them together with the result that they fail. The real question I guess is which type of link is it easier to screw up with. -
I remember an announcement (or at least a similar thread by someone who has experianced the same). The "announcement" was to the effect that it has been noted that a number of Cypres 2 units have this problem. We are assured that the cypres IS on even though the display is inactive. Airtek appear to have taken the attitude that seeing as it is only a glitch with the display, they do not consider it a safety issue and therefore dont recall the units. The say they will operate fine, just that it reads as off. Try getting one of these units to pass a UK flight line check and you will have dificulty though!

couple of posabilities there: 1 he has pre-bought slots with javelin so can put customers ordes through that fast, ie he bought a number of rigs 18 weeks ago but can sell one of those rigs to his customers 2 the ad's wrong

Im sorry, yes you did. Beer for you too. I hope you guys are prepaired for 70 brits taking over the place at easter

Your not listening to what Im asking. Remeber your not talking to me - I have no interest whatsoever in messing with my RSL under canopy. You are talking to all those other people on this thread who do want to disconnect their RSL after opening, for whatever reason. What is your advice to them? If they are going to do it, how/where should they do it to be least at risk? There's no point repeating to them that you would advise them not to do it at all - they already have that advice from you several times.

**STUPID NEWBIE QUESTION** What makes a parachute work?
mr2mk1g replied to Nightingale's topic in Gear and Rigging
that'll explain the same cuttaway drill then -
I just bought myself a really nice pair of gloves in preperation for jumping this winter. I saw them in a shop in blue but bought on line in black (vain I know) http://www.terra-nova.co.uk/extremities/gloves1.shtml Take a look at the "sticky windy gloves". Look like they're exactly what skydivers want - grip on the palm/fingers, thermal and windstopped. They cost £30inc shipping and were delivered the next day!
-
Nothing wrong with that... knowing of a risk and accepting it is one thing, blindly following without a true appreciation of what you're doing is another altogether.

clicky http://www.edirectory.co.uk/pf/pages/moreinfoa.asp?RecordID=DHGCID&companyid=880 http://www.sportswarehouse.co.uk/acatalog/Balaclava.html the first one gives you a nice one + links to some of the other thermal gear you ask about and the second link gives you a very good pic of a balaklava. (Im trying to get something like this myself at the mo - gets cold in england at altitude)
-
Get a Balaclava - you will look like a twat but you'll be a warm twat. Its basically a clasic ski mask but with one big hole for your face instead of individual holes for eyes and mouth. You can get nice thermal ones from most mountineering stores.

**STUPID NEWBIE QUESTION** What makes a parachute work?
mr2mk1g replied to Nightingale's topic in Gear and Rigging
AH, a product of the Jim Wallace Sky School... Id recognise that cuttaway drill anywhere. I dont like it NEVER CHANGE IT though Once you've been trained on a cuttaway drill your pretty much stuck with it for the rest of your life. If you try an mess with it (certainly whilst a newby) you'll prob end up doing half of one and half the other when you really need it to work right. -
if you assessed landing with an RSL as a risk, where would you disconnect it? if you were also trying to gain the benefit of an RSL? I have an RSL, I use it, I NEVER touch it. I am simply trying to help those people who (wrongly IMO - other than in limited situations) consider landing with an RSL in high wind, for an example, as a risk. I want to see if we (as a forum) can minimise the risk we see them as exposing themselves to by coming up with a way they can both have their cake (no RSL on landing) and eat it (RSL for low cuttaways.) So if those are the criteria with which you have to work, where would you disconnect it? We obviously cant change their mind about landing with an RSL being a risk or not - that discussion has been done lots above.

So why is it in the sims as a saftey proc?
