  1. Of course - but they had at least a month to do that as they were had discussions with the media about delaying the broadcast of this information that long ago. Why on earth would they need another two days to come up with a response? The answer is virtually nobody in America took any notice of a late night revelation on one network. It was not covered by any other networks and people only actually start paying attention to this issue when the rest of the world media get hold of the photos and published them earlier today. The conclusion I draw from this that the whitehouse (understandably most might say) simply kept schtum in the hope that it would all blow by without anyone noticing. Once it became obvious that the cat was out, of course then comes the time to make a statement.
  2. Technically just "election" as he didn't actually win the first time round. (ok ok, so that was just a joke).
  3. Maybe because it claims to be an active part of the fight against international terrorism? Maybe because its the closest thing the Arab world has to a democracy? Maybe its beacuse to do so would generate such widespread condemnation from the rest of the Arab League - Saudi Arabia is not seen as a pariah state as Iraq and Afganistan were by even other arabs? Maybe we should have done?
  4. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that - I'm not making the accusation. I just clarified what his accusation was as their appeared to be a little confusion.
  5. He's not saying the conspired about torturing people - but that they conspired about the timing of this when this story broke.
  6. No - the Army brass knew all about this some time ago. The news, was not news to them, don't present speculation as knowledge.
  7. I posted this story in the hope of generating some intelligent discourse over the consequenses of this reveleation. (Also partly because America appeard to be virtually ignorant of it 2 days after it broke). I am surprised everyone seems to think the main argument lies in whether or not anyone else has ever tortured someone and over if this is representative of the entire US army. I don't think there are many plausable arguments that can be made that this represents US official policy or that it is terribly widespread throught the theater. The very serious issue that really must be adressed is what impact this is going to have on the degenerating situation in Iraq and the worsening diplomatic position the US continues to find itself in.
  8. I think its also fair to note that these photo's were first aired 2 days ago on one American TV network. Curiously no other networks wanted to show them or ran the story so it went largly un-noticed until today when media across the rest of the world got hold of them. I note that the White House didn't want to comment on the issue until today - 2 days after the story first went public.
  9. Sounds about right for the average womman. I'm not bitter honest. Oh, ok so I am - what you gonna do about it.
  10. Re: Punishment. It was on the radio this morning that 6 soldiers were already in detention and that the General had been relieved of command/discaplined. Curiously they also had a Red Cross representative in the studio with them who was at that jail 3 weeks ago who said it was a different General in command back then... these photo's are supposed to orriginate from Nov/Dec so would be the other General, not the one being punished.
  11. Hey mark - you know me. Welcome to the forums. Bonehead will do virtually any custom artwork on request - all you have to do is ask them. Email em here: info@boneheadcomposites.com Or you coulda gone and visited em while we were out there.
  12. It's the one in blue, and the crowd is chanting "T.F.A. T.F.A. T.F.A. T.F.A...."
  13. It's true enough. It's been all over the British media today, not just the Mirror - I simply posted that link as it has the photo's in question on the site. The Prime Minister has issued a statement about the photographs: http://politics.guardian.co.uk/iraq/story/0,12956,1207045,00.html
  14. I was under the impression Takeshi's Castle was filmed in the 80's and has long since dissapeared in Japan ?
  15. Appart from the one's who have been dragged through the street and litterally ripped appart at the hands of a mob.
  16. re: stong enough/weak enough Good points. How about just getting hold of an old camera body and measuring how much force is required to rip the front of the camera off via the lens attachement point. So long as the step ring is manufactured to that it fails close to, but at a lower force than would do damage, the step ring would have done its job correctly. It doesn’t matter if that force is generated by a hard opening, a massive lens or a riser strike as regardless of the source, it would have been enough to do damage to the camera. I know there are other methods of protecting the lens - I make use of one myself - but there are a significant number of people out there who simply bolt a camera to the side of their head and risk this kind of damage.
  17. There's no need to turn this into an America bashing thread. That's the quickest way to see an intelligent discussion over this disappear into a slinging match and locked thread. This isn't the American way - it's the way at least 6 US soldiers adopted and we have yet to see how far up the chain of command such attitudes go. It would be naive to hope for a full, open enquiry but that is really what is required here.
  18. Read shotgun... but instead of an ordinary shotgun round full of deadly pellets... theres a beanbag. It reportedly hits you with the same force as a heavyweight boxers punch. Generally it knocks the target down and leaves heavy bruising but is no more deadly than a sucker punch. It's a good non-leathal way of dealing with suspects who are armed with non-projectile weapons.
  19. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/allnews/tm_objectid=14195963&method=full&siteid=50143&headline=outrage-at-american-torture-of-iraqi-prisoners-name_page.html I'm sure this isn't the first you've heard of this... so what are people's views?
  20. Make up a thick solution of cornflour and water or custard powder and water. The liquid will flow like syrup... but when hit will turn to a solid for a short time. Same principal. Fun science lesson for kids.
  21. Don't steal it... least not without letting me know how it goes. I imagine it would have to be some students engineering project or something - testing shear forces, breaking strengths etc to determine the right material to make the ring from. Strong enough to prevent it coming off on a hard opening but weak enough to break on a riser strike. The actual milling of it would be relatively simple unless they conclude its nessasery to engineer in a weak point in the design.
  22. I wouldn't be surprised. The whole point of wikipedia is that it's written by jo-shmo on the street. If there's something you don't like about the page simply edit it yourself.
  23. We should also not lose sight of the fact that the majority of deaths in this sport in England do not cost the insurers anything. Whilst they may be concerned about the possability of a big lawsuit stemming from one, their own statistics will show that the majority of claims stem from minor incidents involving students and non-jumpers. It is these actual claims which will do far more to drive up the cost of insurance than the simple possability of a fatality claim.
  24. you'll also find tapes in orange packaging which are generally a little more expensive. These are also absolutly identical in every way with a different design packaging. Oddly they're often found being sold by the same shop at different prices - never did work that one out.
