  1. I hate you! Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  2. I'd bet you were right. It's exactly what was going through my mind when I hit the pond last season. Granted depth perception is different, yadda yadda, but the concept of not seeing that you're too low "up high" is the same. Cold hard lesson that left me aching for some time. Blues, Ian The important thing is you learned. Some have not seen the ball since kick off and are not even trying to learn. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  3. Larry was a master rigger.
  4. I take this as a personal attack. But not to worry, I can live with it. Where did I tell you to do anything? I tried to explain to you how it works in the real world. You are free to do as you please. This is the first time you have stated your point. I consider myself neither a leader nor a follower. But I am someone how has survived in this sport for almost 30 years by learning from the mistakes of others. Why don't you call me back when you have managed to survive for half that time? In the mean time, safe swooping. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  5. Yes, it does have a cumulative effect even when supplemental O2 is used. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  6. ParaInovators had the carry handle standard on the StreamLite in 1980.
  7. Round canopies are still manufactured, at least here in the US. And in the US a rigger is certifying a canopy as airworthy every time he/she repacks it. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  8. I thought they were pretty good. I remember a lot of PLF's from people jumping them. A rigger friend told me he saw a double Dactyl rig once, with a TSO'd dactyl for the reserve to match the main. It was the tiniest rig he had ever seen to that date. Dunno if I'd jump it. Watch out, I'm going to get us bumped to the old timer's forum. What I meant was there is a single keel and a double keel Paradactyl. Rather than just both sides of the canopy meeting in the middle, there was a small center hump and each side met on the down side of that hump. The rig with 2 dactyls in it was not TSO'd and it belonged to the late Larry Yohn. He even cut the front reserve risers off to make it lighter. Thats hard core. 9. As in most cases like this, Karma had nothing to do with it. He put his head in a warm dark place and an electronic gadget saved his ass. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  10. You never answered the question when I asked it before. Just what is your point? This started out about a young man who hooked in under a H/P canopy and now you are asking if I vote. Is this leading anywhere or do you just like to argue? My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  11. Quote We weren't trying to make it safe for you, we trying to make it safe for us.
  12. Along the same line. It takes 2 for a con to work. The one pulling the scam and the one whose greed blinds him/her to the fact that the deal is just too good to be true. The old saying, "You can't cheat an honest man". Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  13. Nahhh . . . they were okay, but not that okay. Must admit I jumped the cruisair and not the Dactyl, but I sure watched a lot folks pound in on the Dactyls. Remember that entire team at Perris that jumped them? John, that entire team was National and World champion 8 way, Visions/Coors.
  14. um, me thinks 'he' is a 'she'..... And she is a senior rigger with a back rating, has been since 1995. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  15. Do you feel the same way with your political views? Do you vote? Do you condemm political running mates when they debate? Should they not just live within the rules of a given society or not be a part of that society? Sad People who run for elected office tend to live within the rules of the society they live in, in case you haven't noticed. Yes, I do vote and my political views are not the topic of discussion here. Again in case you haven't noticed. And Yes, sad people will argue something as simple as this is. 16. Hey Tom, Some of the smaller rounds sport reserves from those days were really little. The Pioneer 22 had an inflated diameter of around 17 feet. That together with real short lines and your fill time is cut way down. I'll bet the landing was a real thrill. The rounds built today say for pilots rig have to pass the same testing as a square reserve. They are called different names, one being an emergency parachute assembly and the other called a single/dual harness reserve parachute assembly. Sparky He was lucky he did not have capewells. 17. You gave it all those jumps years ago to try and kill you. It failed. Why would you want to give it another chance. Just tell you Buddy, Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  18. I think one of the problems here is you think you have a "Right" to skydive. No one has that "Right". It is a privilege extended to you and me by the people who run drop zones. A W/L regulation or for that matter one that would require an AAD or a helmet does not infringe upon your "Rights". They would take nothing away from. Now as a grown up adult you are free to choose to live by the rules or not, but since it is their drop zone they can set the rules. If mainstream skydiving comes up with some safety standards and convince the people who own the drop zones they are the way to go, what you or I think means squat. Live within the rules of a given society or not be a part of that society. As a free grown adult it is your choice. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  19. Yes, it is a Paradactyl by Handbury and Gary Douris of Free Flight. The also made a double keel Dactyl that was use by Visions/Coors for several years when they were National/World Champions. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  20. What you fail to understand, for some reason, is you do not live in a vacuum. Everything you do affects other people. It might affect them in a positive way or a negative way, but your actions affect other people. None of us get to do what we want anytime we want. That is just a fact of life. Welcome to civilized society. There has never been this "fundamental freedom, self reliance and self determination.. " you speak of. People have always had restrictions on how they behave. And it is almost always the "those who are in fact wildly out of control, corpses looking for a hole in any endeavor they attempt" group that brings about the restrictions on the rest. I don't like it either, but no one yet has come up with a better solution. This is getting way off S&T and maybe you should take your rant to SC. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  21. I wasn't trying to be a smart ass, and apologize if my post came accross as such. I am truly amazed that a reserve deploys this quickly at terminal. Somewhat a comforting thought. No problem. It also has to open in 4 seconds at 60 KEAS with 3 line twist packed in it. Your reserve is a pretty neat piece of equipment. But its worthless if not pulled. 22. Nope, that's a fact. I was there in "the old days" when the squares were big and slow. Stupid stuff would embarass you, maybe break your leg, but not like the carnage I've seen the last ten years. You've only been around for 29 years, what could you possibly know? You just don't want people to have fun. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  23. Everybody needs to read what is said above. Because everybody, if they survive that long, will feel the same way at 30 years. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  24. Thanks for the info. Does it then mean that initiating reserve deployement at 400ft AGL while falling at terminal should result in the reserve being fully deployed about 100ft AGL? That's quite amazing. You can try it if you want. If you are sharp enough to clear the pin exactly at 400, you might might make it. When I have been the one doing the live jumps for a TSO I try to do them at a higher altitude. It give the video jumper a little more room to open after filming my deployment. Now go back and read all the posts and you will see that the most common standard that is tested to is 3 seconds. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  25. What do you think brought on what you describe a "an over regulated culture". It was not the Jim Slatons and J.C. Colclasures of the world. These guys have learned how to fly a canopy like the rest of us can only dream of. It is the 500 jump wonders who feel they should be allowed to do anything they want regardless of the effect on anything or anyone else. It is the selfish, self centered fringe of any part of any society that brings on laws and regulation. When what you do with YOUR life affects how others can live theirs they have the right to put controls on what you do. If you jump out of YOUR airplane, over YOUR dropzone then it is YOUR life to with as you see fit. But as long as you are jumping from someone else airplane and landing on their dropzone with other paying customers around you need to conduct yourself within the limits of this "over regulated culture". You will find this restriction on behavior in any society there is or ever has been. This is not freedom it is anarchy. Think what a mess there would be if everyone followed only the rules that they agreed with. Even wild animals have rules of behavior they follow. When member of their group violate those rules they are killed. Thats keeping it simple. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
